As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. Proverbs 26:21 (ESV)
WORD OF THE WEEK: Quarrelsome: to be angry and look for fights with people with whom others normally get along.
The Camping Catastrophe Church Camp is usually a time of fun, community, worship, and sharing, but today, Barry Buffalo is making things difficult. After trampling Brian Beavers’ tent, Barry told everyone that Tulip Tiger had knocked it down. Barry laughed as Brian Beaver yelled at poor, confused Tulip Tiger. When she couldn’t find their twenty-five sleeping bags, Mamma Rabbit was angry because she thought Mr. Rabbit had forgotten to pack them. But Barry had hidden them in his tent, just to be mean. At the camp fire that night, Barry was still quarreling and causing fights instead of singing worship songs and telling stories. It seemed to Philip Hippo that the only one having fun was Barry. Philip reminded his friend Barry of what God says about Barry’s bad behavior.
(Read Proverbs 26:21 and Proverbs 21:19) Philip explained that just like you can make a big fire with one little flame, you can set people fires with your quarrelsome attitude. People fires are the arguing and hurt feelings that start when we choose unkind words and actions. God wants us to know the power our words and actions can have. God loves us and wants us to show love with the words and actions we choose. Barry decided that he needed to put out all the people fires he had started. Barry wanted to be more like Jesus and bring peace and reconciliation. Barry apologized and asked for forgiveness. Peace was restored to Church Camp. So… What do you like about this story? What was weird about the story? What does the story teach us about Jesus? What can we learn from the story for our lives today?
