The Affiliate Support and Advocacy (ASA) Department of the of the ACLU’s National office in New York City, was established in 2002 to collaborate with the ACLU’s affiliates and advance a cohesive nationwide organization. Since then, the department has grown significantly and is comprised of teams that advance policy advocacy, marketing and communications, management and operations, and fund development. The ASA department seeks applicants for the full-time position of Affiliate Fund Development Strategist. OVERVIEW Having completed, in 2010, an aggressive and unprecedented nationwide campaign to raise $400 million in major and planned gifts, the ACLU is now embarking on its first major comprehensive fundraising campaign, tentatively set to run up through the organization’s 100 year anniversary in 2020. Reporting to the Associate Manager of Affiliate Fund Development, the Affiliate Fund Development Strategist works closely with national Development Department staff and colleagues in the Affiliate Support and Advocacy Department to develop capacity building tools and deliver best practices training to affiliate staff to help them create, implement, and evaluate strategies that will aid in the attainment of fund development program goals. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Analyze affiliate fund development programs, development plans, and donor portfolios. Synthesize data, identify areas for growth, and make strategic recommendations to maximize outcomes and meet fund development goals. Monitor progress and recommend adjustments to strategies to increase program effectiveness. Consult with affiliate development staff to determine their fund development needs, provide strategic guidance, and develop tools to facilitate the implementation of fund development strategies and to track progress toward achievement of fund development goals. Determine fund development organizational best practices and work with affiliate Executive Directors to help facilitate their implementation. Develop tools and design workshops and trainings to ensure that nationally developed strategies are seamlessly implemented at the affiliate level. Create and implement programs to enhance and broaden affiliate organizational and capacity building goals and to develop affiliate staff expertise in fund development. Collaborate with other ASA staff to help build organizational capacity in affiliates and enhance effectiveness. Collaborate with affiliate Executive Directors and development staff to create, review and implement donor strategies from donors and prospects with the capacity to make gifts of $10,000 or more.
Coordinate regular best practices conference calls. Design and produce tools to facilitate affiliate participation in the upcoming ACLU Centennial Campaign and work with affiliates to design and implement campaign strategies. Collaborate with Development Department staff to facilitate strategic donor relationships to further program goals.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree is required. 3- 5 years of relevant work experience in fund development and strategic planning is required. Experience in organizational development is preferred. Superior communication skills both verbal and in writing; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate persuasively with diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability in building consultative relationships that foster trust and facilitate change while working with colleagues remotely. Experience with identifying, stewarding, soliciting and closing gifts of $10,000 or more, highly desired. Excellent analytic and strategic thinking skills. Ability to develop creative solutions to aid affiliate staff in meeting goals. Ability to conceptualize programmatic change and develop strategies to effectuate the changes. Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail. A self-starter who takes initiative and is skilled at prioritizing. Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and demonstrate grace under pressure. The ability to represent the organization and interface and mediate with a wide range of people at all levels. Experience working in a membership organization with a national/affiliate structure is preferred. Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Internet usage. Familiarity with fundraising systems or databases. Willingness to travel. Commitment to advancing the mission and goals of the ACLU.
