Executive Summary: 1. Demographics - Briefly highlight the project location, target demographics of the project beneficiaries and the surroundings in terms of community size, literacy rate, education levels, monthly income, occupations etc (if relevant)
Its an existing project which commenced its activities in the year 2000 and is a continuing programme which extends residential care & training for those born with Neuro- Developmental Disorders such as Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism & Multiple Disabilities, hailing from economically, socially & educationally backward families, broken families or single parent family, addicted families and families with indifferent parents, with a sole aim of making them independent in all possible achievable spheres of live. Ashraya is situated in Kollam District of Kerala State. 2. Problem - Briefly highlight the problem that you are trying to address.
The basic education that a child with Neuro- Developmental Disorder requires is in preparing them to be independent. Our focus and target is in achieving same through our residential rehabilitation programme which is tailor-made to suit the requirements of each special child along with round the clock observation and monitoring in ensuring targeted results. The concern we have today is in the approach being adopted to mainstream such challenged children by using the method that is meant for normal children in formal/ inclusive education . Intellectually challenged children have a stream of their own and their requirement of education is the training focused on behaviour modification and vocational training which is different when compared to the education pattern for normal children.

3. Approach - Briefly highlight the approach your organization is taking towards solving the problem outlined above. What are the main activities that the project wants to do?
1. Convincing the parents that comparison and over expectations should not be entertained related to their special child’s education & development and never should be compared to that of a normal child of same age. 2. Such children are special and the approach to be adopted in managing and training them is quite different, pains taking and of repetitive nature, progress/ results are slow but possible and permanent. 3. Building up confidence in the parents by proper counseling and making them participate regularly in the rehabilitation procedures by which the fact and reality of the special situation of their child would be ingrained in them and acceptance of this reality by the parents would invariably contribute to the development of their children. 4. Effectiveness - Briefly explain why your organization believes that the approach highlighted above would be effective in solving the problem. Provide references to pilot Kindly refer Activity Report of Ashraya projects or published research that can back up this claim. Provide the ‘Theory of Change’ on how the intervention would lead to a successful outcome.
Accepting the reality /condition of their challenged child solves the major hindrance and subsequent anxieties in the parents which invariably leads to the development of the child. With the acceptance of the situation they are in they venture in taking positive steps and faces the situation as a challenge, which will directly result in the progress and development of their child. Ashraya Model have always being focusing in instilling this aspect in the parents, to break their barriers and bring them out of the shell which they are entrapped in. By this it is intended to give them a sense of freedom and also hand hold them to give them the much needed confidence to break their mindset and move forward with a feel that they are not isolated islands of existence in managing/rehabilitating their challenged child. Also kindly refer the answer to query No. 5 below.
5. Alternatives - Briefly highlight the alternate approaches that your organization considered (or other organizations are taking) towards solving the problem outlined above. What are the reasons that the alternates were discarded?
Any rehabilitation method can bear fruits only when the beneficiaries, for whom its meant for, accept the rehabilitation procedure in totality. Our beneficiaries are challenged children and the main factor which triggers their acceptance of the rehabilitation programme is on how effectively the rehabilitation center can deliver them their requirements in a mode they desire. The key to satisfy this desire of their’s is only through the tool of unstinted love and affection. We have been successful because we could effectively deliver and capture the hearts of the beneficiaries and bring in the much needed development through the above tool. Ashraya right from inception did not give an institutional feel neither to the parents nor to their challenged wards. It is a “home away from home” for the tiny tots and Ashraya’s concept of family model was solely instrumental for same.

6. Outcomes - Briefly highlight the expected concrete outputs and outcomes that you expect at the end of the project. Please provide succinct and exact descriptions.
Many ASHRAYA daughters afflicted with Intellectual Developmental Disorders such as Mental Retardation, Autism etc. on attaining their adulthood have left the fold of Ashraya home as independent and confident individuals who are today supporting their family by taking up the responsibility of house hold work without exhibiting unacceptable behaviour patterns , which is normally shown by other untrained challenged adult individuals. In short they became a contributive member and an asset to their family rather than being a burden. Quite a few children who were affected with Cerebral Palsy & other physical disabilities and who were intellectually average or below average, with special training/education were put through regular schooling and over the years 6 of them completed their graduation and are ready today for employment and awaiting for suitable jobs through Govt. Special Employment Exchange etc.
7. Metrics - Briefly explain what metrics will be used to measure the effectiveness of the project at the end of 2 years. How would you quantify that the outputs are a progression of effects that resulted from the proposed work? Describe the metrics to gauge the outcomes specified above in measurable and quantifiable terms.
In our project we have two distinctive areas. 1. Focuses in mainstreaming those children with average / below average intelligence through regular schooling/ academic activities. 2. Those with sub-average intelligence such as Mental Retardation, Autism etc. are giving special education/ training in preparing them to be independent in conducting their daily living activities, behavior modifications and preparing them to lead a life which is socially acceptable and contributive to the society. The answers to your query No. 6 stated above clarifies and reflect the yard stick which defines the measure of success being achieved versus the efforts put. 8. Long Term Impact - Briefly highlight the potential long term direct impact of the project.
Kindly refer to the answer to the Query No. 6&7 above. Here again we reiterate that there should be yard stick for measuring things which are measurable. Ashraya focuses change in traits of a challenged child by training them to gain maturity not only in their behavior pattern but also to take up responsibility in being independent and also extend support to the family in whatever way they can. To measure such things we do not have any yardsticks as of date because its basically a progress in human behavior pattern. In short inculcating “wisdom” in intellectually challenged individuals have no yardsticks of measure. Its just humane and it can be felt only.

9. Highlights – What makes this project unique?
This project is unique in the sense that, - Ashraya ventured to give a homely feel to its residential rehabilitation programme rather than an institutional feel. - Through the family concept adopted by Ashraya and by giving a variance to the selection of beneficiaries to the residential rehabilitation programme i.e., by having a mix of NeuroDevelopmental Disorders stricken children with Mental Retardation, Autism, Cerebral Palsy , Multiple Disablities etc Ashraya could open the wide canvas for the development of the challenged children. - The mix of disabilities as stated above contributed to an all round development in its challenged wards 10. by giving themfor anSuccess opportunity to observe andorganization adopt a giveand andproject take philosophy based on their Capacity – Explain how your personnel are challenges. positioned to carry on the proposed activities with a high standard of excellence. Cite any recent project that might demonstrate your capacity to implement this effort successfully.
•those with could support those without mobility; Ashraya hasmobility been created in an environment which is charged based on human sentiments & Values and strictly Social Service oriented. •those with intellectual capacity and without mobility could support and guide those without intellectual capacity; Over the last one and a half decades we have observed only individuals who have certain amount of
the above traits can contribute and sustain in this Ashraya environment. Such individuals are self •those whocreative, had the innovative, intellectual dedicated capacity and mobility could guide without and intellectual propelled, andwithout contributes their might boththose intellectually physically capacity to guide them and handhold them in proper conduct of their daily living activities such as since its their basic nature. brushing, bathing, toileting, preparing of beds, washing clothes and general environmental hygiene. Such traits can’t be developed but its inborn and mother nature have always blessed the Ashraya •The constantwith grooming by the eldersuch daughters environment individuals having traits. of Ashraya lend the valuable message of mutual respect, love and bonding amongst the Ashraya siblings to move forward as a cohesive group. Kindly refer Activity Report of Ashraya. All the above factors opened up a wide arena for Ashraya daughters to observe and develop in a wide spectrum of activities. This concept paved the way for Ashraya approach being christened as a Foster Care Home for developing challenged children for independent ASSISTED LIVING CENTRES being 11. Scale – How can this project scale? Is theliving idea in scalable? planned by Govt. of Kerala in all 14 Districts of the State for challenged adults when their parents are Ashraya no more.sincerely believes that this concept even though unique and painstaking is practical, effective and emulative. We also believe that the individual volunteering this task invariably gets an opportunity and platform to contribute/ perform , refine and reform himself through selfless work and evolve as a personality which is the purpose of human existence and an answer to the riddle of life in being a human being.
To clarify it further, we can take a horse to the water but its the horse’s decision to drink. We just wish that the dormant, strong and capable horses amongst us of our society break their above mindset/ attitude and decides to venture for such selfless work and contribute. This would invariably open the avenues in creating more Ashraya environments and the idea will become scale-able.

We are trying our level best to create an approach in the society by re-engineering the society’s thinking in extending services to the needy in a wide spectrum rooting in selfless work i.e.to do service for human progress, peace and prosperity without emphasizing on personal gains and returns. The needy eg. those born with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities can’t comprehend the concept of Caste, Religion, Gods , Politics etc. and all these concepts are merged in them as one entity i.e. un tinted love. This is what Ashraya also focuses on. ASHA & ASHRAYA should try and pool its resources and wisdom in merging all the above aspects in reducing same to a single entity as stated above which would invariably re-engineer the society’s thoughts and approach.
