What is Ask Your Candidates! (AYC!)? Ask Your Candidates! is a voter education initiative focused on medical progress. Armed with information about their candidates’ views, Americans can make educated voting decisions that help determine the pace of medical progress in the years ahead. Using local and national strategies, including online, social media and grassroots activities, the initiative will urge voters to ask congressional candidates to share their positions on public funding for medical research and policies that influence the volume and pace of private-sector medical innovation.
Why Should You Participate in AYC!? There are two sources of funding for medical research, and they are both crucial: federal support and private-sector investment. Members of Congress have significant influence over both funding streams: they determine annual funding levels for publicly supported research at universities, academic health centers and other research institutions across the country, and they craft laws affecting the return on private-sector investment in medical research and development. Knowing candidates’ positions on issues impacting the pace of medical progress empowers voters to choose candidates who are aligned with their values.
AYC! Goals Elevate medical research in the national conversation, conveying the multi-faceted contribution medical progress makes to the well-being of our nation and its people. Engage voters in asking their candidates to weigh in on issues affecting the pace of medical progress. Disseminate information broadly to ensure as many voters as possible gain access to it. Deploy new strategies to encourage candidates to share their views on these issues given declining response rates to traditional candidate surveys.
