Persona 1 Ion is 70 years old man, who is living with his wife, in a small village. He has two children, a boy and a girl. The boy is living with him, and the girl nearby. When he was 65, he had an accident. He accidentally slipped on ice while he was carrying two heavy water tanks used for cattle watering. Unfortunately, he damaged his back and his legs, and because of the rheumatism, his recovery was slowly. With the days passes, he realized that because of the injuries, his mobility decrees, and he was not able to carry those water tanks that easy. Before he was able to do those things by himself, but now he needs help from his son. For him was always important to be independent, and do things by himself. Taking care of animals was one of the main activities of his entire life and now due to his injuries, he started to feel more and more useless and powerless. Ion tries to keep up with everyday tasks by overrunning his boundaries even if in this way his pains are increasing. He knows that continuing this way may cause him more healthy problems, but he cannot give up to the activities that makes him happy.
CURRENT SCENARIO 1. On Monday morning, at 6 am Ion goes to his farm to take care of the cattle for 4 hours. During his activities he had to carry some water tanks, but he failed to do that because of his pain. Due to this, he had to wait for someone else to come and help him to accomplish that task. 2. On a Tuesday afternoon, Ion went to a supermarket to buy a big bag of sugar. When he arrived at the shelf with sugar, he realized that the sugar bag is on the highest shelf, and due to his injuries, he cannot reach it.
FUTURISTIC SCENARIO -
On Monday morning, at 6 am Ion goes to his farm to take care of the cattle for 4 hours. During his activities he had to carry some water tanks. Fortunately, he had a new easy to use device that helped him to carry the water tanks without any help. He dressed up his new device that looks like a backpack and he fixed and adjusted its straps and he was able to lift the water tanks easily.

Persona 2 Maria is 72 years old widowed woman, born in a small village, currently she moved to Romania’s capital, Bucharest, at her daughter in order to take care of her little 12 years old niece. A couple of years ago she broke her wrist. She went to the doctor, but due to a wrong medical procedure, that supposed to be simple, her wrist did not cured well and he lost a part of its mobility. In addition to this, she also got osteoporosis and rheumatism and she often feels heavy pain in her bones even when she is doing no activity. Taking care of an entire house and her niece is not that easy. She have some moments when she feels powerless. She is getting help from her daughter too, but most of everyday tasks she is doing by herself. She sometimes feel that the time needed for complete her tasks is not enough, mostly because she thinks that it takes more and more time, day by day, but she do not want to give up at the only things that makes her feel useful.
CURRENT SCENARIO 1. On a Friday morning, after Maria left her niece at school, she went to do some groceries shopping. She wanted to buy a big bottle of water, but when she tried to carry it to the bus station, she was not able, due to her wrist pain. Also another problem occurred when she was attempting to get in the bus. Because of her reduced hand mobility and the fact that the bus was crowded, she was not able get in the bus. 2. Maria starts her Saturday by cleaning the house. She managed to wash the dishes but when it comes to clean the floor, she was not able to carry the bucket because it was too heavy for her.
FUTURISTIC SCENARIO -
On a Friday morning, after Maria left her niece at school, she went to do some groceries shopping. Normally she could not handle to carry a big bottle of water, but with her new device that she was wearing, looking like a small backpack with two straps fixed on each arm, she not only managed to carry that big bottle of water, but also get in the bus, despite of the crow from the bus and the heavy weight she was carrying.

DESIGN BRIEF DESIGN PROBLEM STATEMENT Nowadays more and more people are facing different problems when they attempt to carry their everyday luggage, such as shopping bags, traveling bags and suitcases. It becomes even harder when they have to carry heavier things, part of their day by day life. The common trigger for those problems is mainly the health state of the people. For example the most frequent problems that disregards age, gender and disabilities are back, muscle and bones pain. The goal is to develop a device that is able to support and distribute the heavy loads carried by hands.
USERS Target users: all ages people, disabilities people with hand problems. User task: Carrying things as a daily routine. User needs: Ability to handle and carry heavy things easily. Existing solutions: -

SUCCESS CRITERIA Success criteria is based on a product that fits to every category of people’s needs, as was mentioned above. The main purpose of the device is the ability to support and distribute loads. Its success also depends on some features that people are requesting for: -
The device should be discreet and easy to use considering that people of all age will wear it. Lightweight, in order not to provide extra load or discomfort; Ergonomic and comfortable; Adjustable (one size fits all) Affordable
CONSTRAINTS Product development will be based on simple technologies and materials, like textile straps, Velcro and plastic. High end technologies and materials such as robotics, batteries and electronic parts will be avoided in order to obtain a cheap and simple to use device.

According to the Assessment Matrix, the Idea 1 is the best rated and should be chosen in order to fulfil end users’ needs. After presenting all 3 ideas to our responders and other potential users, we have concluded, based on their responses that designing a product family will be the best choice.

CONCLUSION A product family consists of two main products will be designed in order to harvest more users by satisfying their different needs. In addition to this, two optional devices, compatible with both products, will also be developed. By this, the final products will be able to cover most of the people’s individual problems regarding heavy loads handling and carrying.
