Game 12 - North Augusta
QUICK STARTS
The Bengals have scored first in all 11 of their games this year. Moreover, each of the first scores have come in the first quarter of the game. Blythewood has scored on their first drive in five of their games. The Bengals scored on their first drives against Clover, South Florence, Dutch Fork, Westwood, and Lugoff-Elgin and are 3-2 in games in which they score on their first drive.
TEN YEARS AND COUNTING
Blythewood High School is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. The football team, however, will be celebrating it’s tenth anniversary of competition next year. Blythewood’s first year of existence featured only a JV and B-Team football schedule due to the SCHSL scheduling. The Bengals competed at the varsity level in every other sport that first year.
GETTING STRONG RETURNS
Senior wide receiver Derambez Drinkard has been strong on offense, averaging 13.7 yards per catch. But his efforts on special teams have been outstanding. Drinkard is averaging 34.2 yards per kickoff return and has already returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season. He currently has 582 kickoff return yards on the season and has set both the school record and single-season record for return yards. Aaron Peak previously both records with 513 return yards in 2013. Drinkard has also tied a school record with the two returns for touchdowns. Demonta Brown (2009), Shyheim Brown (2012), and Aaron Peak (2013) each had two returns for touchdowns.
NORTH-SOUTH ALL-STARS
The Bengals are once again represented at the annual NorthSouth All-Star Football Game in Myrtle Beach. The event, sponsored this year by Touchstone Energy Cooperative, will be held on December 12 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. The Bengals will be represented by seniors Xavier Kelly (OL) and Khris Pam (DB). These two join a list of outstanding Bengals to have represented Blythewood. WE’LL TAKE THAT
The Blythewood Bengals have intercepted 11 passes on the season, nearly doubling their effort from 2014 (6). Cole Brown and Sekwan Jenkins each have three interceptions to lead the defense. Brown had two interceptions in Week 6 against South Florence, leading him to be named the Defensive Player of the Week by The State. Jenkins, also a junior, returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown against Clover in Week 4. The return set a school record for longest interception return.

SAY OSEI
Senior Osei Thomas (pronounced Oh-Say) has been a leader for the Bengals all season, despite missing some time with injuries. With his 141 rushing yards against Spring Valley, Thomas went over the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season. Thomas leads the Bengals in rushing yards (1,029), touchdowns (15), points (90), and all-purpose yards (119.7/game). Thomas is just the fourth Bengal to gain 1,000 yards rushing in a season. He joins Richard Mounce (2006), Brandon Wilds (2009), and Demetric Gray (2011). www.BlythewoodBengals.com

THE DUAL THREAT ISREAL
For the past two seasons, quarterback David Isreal has been showing off his arm and racking up passing yards for the Bengals. This year, however, the senior quarterback has been leading Blythewood down the field with both his legs and his arm. Isreal has averaged nearly 50 yards per game rushing this year. He has rushed for 100 yards three times this season, including a 116-yard game against Spring Valley to end the regular season. The senior also ran for the game-winning score against Irmo with less than a minute left. But his exploits on the ground have not diminished his threat through the air. The quarterback is averaging 157.7 yards passing per game this year and has thrown for 17 touchdowns.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
It’s been over a year since the Bengals have recorded a 100-yard receiving game and Kenny Benton is the only active receiver to earn that accomplishment. Below is a list of the 100-yard receiving games in Blythewood’s history. (active players in italics; * denotes a playoff game)

FILLING SOME BIG SHOES
Junior linebackers Micah Byrd and Cassius Garner knew they had some big shoes to fill this season when they were tabbed as starting linebackers for the Bengals. In the past two seasons, the Bengals have sent two linebackers to All-Star Games (Jalen Williams, now at Clemson, was the 2013 North-South Defensive MVP and Hassan Belton, now at Western Carolina, was the 2014 Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP). And while neither Byrd nor Garner will participate in an All-Star game this year, they’ve each carried on the tradition of hard-hitting Bengal linebackers. Byrd leads the team with 148 total tackles and is within reach of the school record (162). Garner, who missed some time to injury, has 97 tackles on the season, including 11 tackles for a total loss of 46 yards. Garner also has six quarterback hurries.
BROTHERS BEFORE BENGALS
While spending the long summer months in the weight room and 7-on-7 tournaments can help teammates for bonds like brothers, two Bengals have been working on their brotherly bonds much longer than during their high school years. Senior Timel Benton and junior Kenny Benton have been teammates since birth and have been bringing their talents to the Bengal family for the past few seasons. They have both served as a receiver in the Bengal offense, with Timel also acting as the back-up quarterback. The brothers were able to accomplish something special late in the second game against Ridge View. Timel, in at quarterback, was able to find Kenny for a long touchdown, becoming the first brother combination to score in the school’s short history. Timel has rushed, passed, and caught a touchdown for Blythewood this season. Kenny has three career 100-yard receiving games, including a 166-yard performance against Dutch Fork this season.
SHORT ON RETURNS
While the Bengals have set records on kickoff returns this season, the Blythewood kickers have prevented opponents from having the same opportunity. Seniors Cody Turner and Derek Ryan have had a combined for 73 kickoffs this season and have had 34 of those kickoffs result in a touchback. The kickers are averaging 53.3 yards per kickoff.
SHRINE BOWL BENGALS
While the Bengals do not have a Shrine Bowl player this year, the school has been fortunate to have a few players earn the recognition over the past 10 years. Page 6

A team’s first game of the season is usually filled with miscues and missed opportunities. With 106 yards in penalties, this was certainly the case for the 2015 Blythewood Bengals. Thankfully, however, the Bengals were able to overcome their early season miscues to earn a 27-13 victory at Rock Hill. David Isreal and Osei Thomas each ran for a touchdown to lead the Bengals.
Though it was a road game, the Bengals returned to District Two Stadium for a nonconference game against rival Ridge View. The Blazers were opening the 2015 campaign and playing their first game under a new head coach. The Bengals started fast and never looked back, earning a 2814 victory over the Blazers. Osei Thomas rushed for three touchdowns and 113 yards to lead the Bengals.
In a game of momentum swings, the Lexington Wildcats were able to take hold of the momentum in the final minutes of the game to earn the victory over the Blythewood Bengals. The Wildcats put together a 93yard drive (21 plays) that lasted 7:20 to score with less than three minutes left to take the lead for good. The game was also impacted by severe weather, causing an 80-minute delay mid-way through the 3rd Quarter.
After stalling on their first drive of the season, the Bengals drove 68 yards in their second drive to open the scoring in the game. Isreal found the end zone from 7 yards out to give the Bengals the early lead. The Rock Hill Bearcats responded, driving 90 yards mid-way through the second quarter to get on the board. The Bengals responded immediately, getting a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to put the Bengals up for good. Kicker Cody Turner added two field goals for Blythewood in the second half, in addition to the Thomas 3-yard touchdown run. Defensively the Bengals were led by linebacker Cassius Garner. Garner had 11 total tackles. Armon Bosier had four tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Thomas continued his mastery over the Blazer defense. Thomas ended the 2014 regular season with three touchdowns and over 180 yards rushing against the same Blazers. This time Thomas would get all of his yards in the first half, as he would sit the second half due to a bruised shoulder. His three scores would be enough for the Bengals. David Isreal hit Jacob McGuire for a 26-yard touchdown pass to conclude the scoring for Blythewood. Isreal ended the game with 224 passing yards. The Bengal defense was again led by Cassius Garner. The linebacker had 13 total tackles, including a sack.

David Isreal ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Bengals. The game was supposed to by Blythewood’s Homecoming game, however that was changed when the game was moved up a day due to the storms associated with Hurricane Joaquin.
Weber opened the scoring, catching a 26yard touchdown pass from David Isreal on the game’s opening drive. Moments later, Sekwan Jenkins would set a school record by returning a Blue Eagle interception 82 yards for a touchdown. Wright, seeing his first action of the season due to injury, scored on his first two runs, 19 yards and 37 yards. The sophomore running back would add a touchdown reception later in the game. After a two-week layoff due to the flooding in the area, the Bengals returned to the football field to start region play against the visiting Dutch Fork Silver Foxes. The Bengals started out strong, scoring on their first three drives of the game, however the Silver Foxes showed why they’ve played in each of the last three state championship games. The Silver Foxes were able to withstand the early Bengal scoring and put together back-to-back scoring drives late in the game to seal the region victory.
The Blythewood Bengals traveled down Wilson Boulevard to take on the Westwood Redhawks in a region contest. Most of the game was a back-and-forth contest between the rival schools, however the Redhawks were able to take back the lead midway through the fourth quarter and hold on to earn the region victory.
The Blythewood Bengals celebrated Senior Night by scoring on their first three possessions of the game and never looking back to defeat the visiting Lugoff-Elgin Demons in a region game. In all, the Bengals scored on nine of their 15 possessions for the game.
The Bengals were led by David Isreal. The quarterback threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to pace the Bengals. Kenny Benton had a career-high 166 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Osei Thomas led the Bengals in rushing and added the final score. Defensively the Bengals were led by Sekwan Jenkins. The defensive back had 13 tackles and an interception. Terrance Coates had six tackles and a sack for Blythewood.

Despite allowing a long Westwood drive to start the game, the Bengals were able to recover a Redhawk fumble and the goal line and turn that in to the first score of the game. Unfortunately for the Bengals, every time Blythewood was able to score the Redhaws were able to answer quickly. Kyle Wright and Osei Thomas each rushed for two touchdowns to pace the offense. The Bengals used a strong fourth quarter performance to earn the region victory and the opportunity to host a first round playoff game.
