‘SUCCESS MAKES IT HARD FOR VERMONT, YALE TO FILL SCHEDULES’ - NYC BUCKETS After UVM’s win at Yale, NYCBuckets.com said ‘Vermont and Yale have had the same problem the last couple of seasons. They have become too successful to fill a non-conference schedule without a whole lot of work.’

BILAS’ PRESEASON PICKS ESPN’s Jay Bilas gave his preseason college basketball predictions for the upcoming season last Thursday. Bilas mentioned the Catamounts as a ‘valued mid-major selection’ along with Harvard, Bucknell, Yale, Oakland, Middle Tennessee State, Charleston, and Florida Gulf Coast. LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST
‘Vermont confirmed what every America East team feared — that the Catamounts are really, really good, and not just for a mid-major. Vermont played only six guys 10-or-more minutes and they all contributed in a major way. On top of that, the team showed poise down the stretch, coming back and almost beating one of the best teams in the nation on the road.’
CollegeInsider.com named Trae BellHaynes and Anthony Lamb to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List last Wednesday. The award honors the top Division I Mid-Major Player of the Year.
CALIPARI’S QUOTE ABOUT UVM
Former UVM forward and America East Sixth Man of the Year, Darren Payen ‘17, has signed with Spain’s Baloncesto Benidorm. Last season, Payen was the second Catamount to receive the Sixth Man of the Year Award behind teammate Cam Ward in 201415. He was a key reserve for UVM by dropping 8.3 points and grabbing 2.7 boards per game against conference foes. Payen was the fourth-best shot blocker in the league with 17 swats. The 6-8 big man sank 76.7% (56-of73) of his attempts from the floor and charted five double-figure games against America East teams.
After his Kentucky Wildcats were almost the victim of an upset, head coach John Calipari complimented UVM on its efforts: “You cannot play Popcorn State and learn anything. You’ve got to play good teams. I didn’t realize how good (Vermont) was until I watched the tape. Then I was like, ‘who scheduled this game? This is ridiculous.’ They just do an unbelievable job. If you watch them, they create good shots for each other each time down, they are either shooting layups or 3s,” Calipari continued during his post-game news conference. “Defensively, they fight like crazy, they are a terrific rebounding team.”
