UW Therapy Access This document will outline the current UW Therapy clinic access model based upon proposed changes introduced in the Sport Model Review (SMR). The Sport Model Review, undertaken in UW Athletics, has identified 3 different categories, named as follows: Market-Driven- Level 1 High Performance- Level 2 Competitive- Level 3. Increasing demands will be placed upon the Market-Driven- Level 1 sports- Football, Hockey, Basketball and Volleyball. In line with this model, those student-athletes will have year- round, priority access to therapy services in the clinic. The High Performance and Competitive levels each contain a large number of athletes who have varied competitive schedules. As such access to the UW therapy clinic will commence based upon the following criteria: 1. When a complete competitive roster is submitted. Only athletes on the competitive team complement are eligible for therapy services. This does not include red-shirt, practice or development team players. 2. Once all team medical forms and eligibility forms are submitted. 3. Access is provided during regular OUA competitive season and playoff competitions Note that some teams within the High Performance and Competitive levels have shorter seasons while some have full year seasons. As such we have set a target date of November 1st as a turnover date where some teams will have reduced access and some will commence access to therapy services. During the period of clinic access there still remains a priority decision tree, meant to provide access based upon having the most acutely injured athletes being treated first. (See Appendix A, please disregard the ‘Tiers’, which should read ‘Levels’. The following teams will have access to therapy services during their competitive OUA season as outlined above up to November 1. High Performance
Competitive
Cross Country
Baseball
Field Hockey
Golf
Rugby-W
Rugby- M
Soccer
Tennis
Swimming After November 1st, priority access is no longer given to the aforementioned teams/athletes. We have been in discussion with SOS Physiotherapy in the Student Life Centre to assist us in providing care for our varsity athletes outside of their competitive season. This includes pre and post-season. Current UW undergraduate and graduate students have extended
health coverage as part of their benefit package. This covers 80% of the cost of physiotherapy services. We feel confident that with this arrangement our athletes will still be seen quickly on campus by trusted health care professionals. Although the aforementioned teams/ athletes may continue to train, after November 1st priority will be given to the following teams participating in their competitive season. High Performance
Competitive
Curling
Badminton
Track and Field
Figure Skating
Swimming
Nordic Skiing Squash
We understand that athletes may sustain injuries outside of their competitive season during training sessions individually or with their team. In order to provide priority access to those currently in-season and allow for appropriate length of therapy sessions, given the manpower, fiscal and facility constraints we are faced with, we feel that this is the most equitable way to distribute our services. Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress. It is fluid and may be modified over time, given our experiences. As always our first priority is to provide the highest level of care to our UW Varsity community. Future directions in therapy services are yet to be determined and there are many exciting possibilities. I will keep you apprised of any pertinent changes. As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact me directly. Regards, Rob Burns Head Athletic Therapist
