SIMONSIDE ATTENDANCE CHART TOPPERS

EVERY MINUTE COUNTS... Arrive on time by

As you know, children with 100% attendance each term receive a certificate and special prize and at the end of the autumn term, we were delighted to present 62 children with individual rewards. This is a 34% increase since the end of the summer term, which is fabulous. We would all like to say a HUGE thank you for your help and support in getting your children to school as much as possible last term...a wonderful achievement! In addition to our individual rewards, there was a hard fought battle between several classes for the class attendance prize. The competition was close and it wasn’t until the final week that we could declare 2M the winners for autumn 2016! What a fabulous effort from Mrs Mustard’s class...keep it up!

27th January 2017

5 to 9 While just a few minutes late here and there can seem like nothing, lateness quickly mounts up to learning loss. Over a year, lateness can have a significant impact on your child’s progress so please do all that you can to help your children arrive in school on time every day.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME If you are having difficulties in getting your child to school on time, why not try some of these recommended top tips?

2. Make sure children have a set bedtime that allows them to get their recommended 911 hours sleep each night

1. Set an alarm clock for a time that allows you extra time to get ready to leave

3. Get book bags/PE kits/ Uniform ready the night before

4. Switch off all TVs/ Computers/Tablets for at least 1 hour before bedtime 5. Consider sending y child to our Breakfast Club from 8am daily

6. Contact Mrs Pegman or Mrs Gibson immediately if you think your child is unhappy at school or if there is anything we can do to support you with attendance or punctuality.

OUR CURRENT ATTENDANCE FIGURES As part of our ongoing commitment to raise our attendance figures, we regularly monitor whole school, class and individual attendances. Weekly whole school and class attendance figures can be found on our school website so please check regularly for updates to see how we are all doing. Our recent attendance figures for the second half of the autumn term are in and show that unfortunately, our overall attendance fell to 94.2%, which is almost 2% below our 96% target. The main reason for absence so far this year has been illness, however, lateness has affected our overall attendance figure too so we will all be working together over the coming weeks and months to improve our punctuality wherever possible. It is therefore very important that you contact school immediately if you have any concerns about your child or if there is something that you think we can do to support you with your child’s attendance and/or punctuality.

Did you know? Our yards are open and adults are on duty from 8.45am daily. Why not try and ‘beat the bell’ every day next week?

LAND AHOY! THE PIRATES ARE ON THEIR WAY... Are you wondering where your child’s class is in our race to reach the attendance treasure chest? Here is the current ranking (up to 20th January 2017, which means the furthest each class can be is island 3) ...each class is trying to move towards number 13 to receive their chosen prize for the entire class. REMINDER: OUR SCHOOL PROCEDURES As a parent, you are legally responsible for making sure your child gets a fulltime education and this means making sure they attend regularly. Our aim is to work together with parents to support you with any issues related to your child’s attendance and punctuality. To do this as effectively as possible, we will:

USEFUL WEBSITES 

Simonside Primary School for weekly attendance updates www.simonsideprimary.org Public Health England for advice on illnesses and how to minimize the spread of infection www.gov.uk/government/ organisations/public-health-england Gov.UK for information regarding attendance and absence www.gov.uk/ school-attendance-absence/overview

Monitor individual children’s attendance and punctuality on a daily basis

Contact parents/carers to establish reasons for any absence/lateness

Contact parents via letter when a child’s attendance level falls below 90% (children with an attendance of 90% are missing approximately one month or 20 days of school per year)

Parents/carers of children with less than 90% attendance for more than one half term, will be invited to a meeting with the Deputy Head Teacher / Learning Mentor to discuss ways in which we can work together to improve children’s attendance

If attendance does not improve, school will share their concerns with the LA, who may decide to take legal action against parents (which can involve penalty fines of up to £2500 per parent, per child).
