Definitions • Reluctant Reader: – Anyone who does not show interest in reading. • May simply be a child who needs to be coaxed into reading texts. • May be one who vehemently refuses to read. • Sometimes hide the ambivalence towards reading using other behaviors. – Become the class clown when it is time to for independent reading – Child behaves “naughtier” when asked to sit and read a book aloud

• Eager Reader: – Can’t pry them away from a book, magazine, etc. 3/13/14

Eager vs Reluctant • Reading is not natural – Not all brains learn reading skills at the same time or rate – Things almost always even out around age 16. • But, if a kid decides he/she “doesn’t read” they may never even attempt to catch up. Once they begin thinking of themselves as a reluctant readers it can become a self-defeating prophecy.

Statistics • Kids love story time – after all, it can delay bed time. But mostly they like books, and love being read to. K-3 classroom are filled with eager readers. The drop off in reading occurs as reading stories turn from something that is naturally good on its own to something that is “good for you.” – At ages 6 to 8, 52% of boys and 59% of girls read books for fun five to seven days a week. – By ages 15 to 17, only 17% of boys and 31% of girls do so. – At ages 15 to 17, 49% of kids visit social networking sites five to seven days a week.
