Storylines • Augustana (4-5) will continue non-conference action this weekend traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. for a pair of twinbills at the H.H.H. Metrodome. • On Friday, Feb. 15, the Vikings will take on Winona State in a doubleheaders beginning at 8:15 p.m. • After a day off on Saturday, Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for a doubleheader at the Metrodome at 3:30 p.m. • Augustana is coming off a nine-game road trip in Hawaii where it went 4-5. • Friday’s games will be the season-opening games for Winona State. • Concordia-St. Paul opens its season with a twinbill against Northern State on Thursday. About Augustana • Augustana went 4-5 on its season-opening trip to Hawaii last week. • The Vikings had a doubleheader washed out at Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 7, cutting its 11-game trip down to nine. • Augustana lost four in a five-game series at Hawaii Pacific before taking three of four games from Hawaii-Hilo. • As a team offensively, Augustana hit .322, scoring 74 runs over the nine-game stretch. • The Vikings allowed 107 runs, 79 earned with 60 walks, 49 strikeouts and 25 hit batters in its season-opening trip. • Tim Huber is in his fifth season as the skipper at Augustana. • Huber owns a career record of 127-95, including 80-49 in conference games. Weekly honors • Junior right handed pitcher Derek Quame was named the NSIC’s Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 12. • Quame made three appearances in a four-game series with Hawaii-Hilo and earned a save in all three stints. • Quame tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. • The honor marks the second career pitcher of the week award for the junior. • Quame was named the NSIC’s Pitcher of the Week on March 26 of the 2012 season.
About Winona State • Friday’s doubleheader will mark the first games of the 2013 season for Winona State. • Winona State was selected to finish third in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while earning one first-place vote. • Winona State’s Seth McMullen was selected as the NSIC’s Preseason Player of the Year. • Winona State finished 29-22 in 2012 and made its third straight NCAA Regional appearance. • Kyle Poock is in his 11th season as the head coach at Winona State and owns a career record of 296-199-4.
About Concordia-St. Paul • Concordia-St. Paul opens its 2013 season tomorrow with a doubleheader at the H.H.H. Metrodome against Northern State. • The Golden Bears finished 21-25 last season, including 12-20 in the NSIC. • Concordia-St. Paul was picked to finish eighth in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll in 2013. • Mark “Lunch” McKenzie is in his 14th season as the head coach at Concordia-St. Paul and owns a career record of 287-224-1. Series notes • Augustana and Winona State will meet for the 20th time in a series that began in 2009. • Winona State leads the all-time series 12-7. • Augustana has won two straight games over Winona State. • The Vikings split a doubleheader at Winona State last season before defeating the Warriors 7-4 in the NSIC Tournament in Mankato (7-4) on May 11. • Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for the 14th time in a series that began in 2007. • The Vikings are 11-2 all-time against Concordia-St. Paul. • The Vikings have won two straight games over the Golden Bears, sweeping a twinbill in St. Paul on April 25 last season (3-2, 8-2). One streak stops, another starts • David Borchardt entered the season on a 14-game hitting streak. • Borchardt extended his hitting streak to 18 games before it was snapped the second game of a doubleheader at Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 8. • Borchardt hit safely in Augustana’s final two games of the trip. • Borchardt is batting .433 on the season picking up 13 hits in 30 at bats, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. • Borchardt ranks second on the team with eight RBI and leads the team with a .667 slugging percentage. Driving em’ in • Junior third baseman Tony Viger started off the 2013 season on a tear picking up 12 hits and batting .400 over the first nine games. • Viger has picked up two doubles and a triple and driven in a team-high 15 runs this season. • Viger had a career-high three hits and three RBI against Hawaii Pacific on Feb. 2 and drove in three more runs against Hawaii Pacific on Feb. 4. The bats are alive • Augustana swung the bats well in its first nine games of the season. • The Vikings finished the trip with 101 hits, including 15 doubles, four triples and two home runs. • The Vikings scored 74 runs and accounted for 130 total bases.
Stealin’ bases • Over the first nine games of the season, Augustana has stole 13 bases on 15 attempts. • Tony Viger was 3 of 3 on stolen base attempts in Hawaii while David Borchardt stole three bases in four attempts. • Nine different players safely stole a base over the first nine games.
On the hill • The Viking pitching staff had a rough go to start the season, starting earlier than in year’s past. • Augustana allowed 107 runs (79 earned) while walking 60 batters and hitting 25. • Augustana used 20 different pitchers over the first nine games of the season. • Derek Quame provided a strong presence on the tail end of the pitching staff making six appearances and earning three saves. • Quame has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out four batters.
According to the coaches • Augustana was picked to finish fourth in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released on Jan. 10. • Augustana earned 158 points in the poll and was picked behind Minnesota State (195), St. Cloud State (177) and Winona State (163). • Minnesota State earned 13 first-place votes while St. Cloud State and Winona State each earned one. • Augustana’s Kye Winter and Ben Heairet were tabbed as players to watch for the Vikings in 2013.
The coaches • Tim Huber is in his fifth season at Augustana in 2013. • Huber owns a career record of 127-95 and has led the team to four straight winning seasons, including three seasons with 30 or more wins. • Huber played collegiately for Minnesota State (1997-2001) where he was an outfielder and a two-time All-NCC selection. • Huber is assisted by former Division II catcher Bryan Nikkel, former semi-pro infielder Mark Laschanzky, former Vikings Brandon Hunt, Casey Jacobson and Zach Weinandt. • Also joining the staff is Juan Thomas, who brings 14 seasons of professional baseball experience to the program. • Thomas was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 10th round of the 1991 Amateur Draft and hit .272 with 303 home runs in 14 minor league seasons. In the pros • Augustana has two former players currently active on professional rosters. • Nate Baumann is on the 2013 active roster for the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League. • Derek Hansen, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 25th round (796th pick) of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft, is on the active roster for the AZL Athletics of the Arizona Rookie League.
