AUSTRALIAN CHEMICALS AND PLASTICS INDUSTRY- KEY STATISTICS Employment • Chemicals and plastics account for about 8% of manufacturing employment. • Average wages in the chemicals and plastics industry is about 16% higher than total manufacturing in the year 2006-07.
Sales and Service Income – Comparison with Manufacturing Growth in chemicals and plastics appears related to growth in manufacturing. This is mainly because about 70% of chemicals and plastics production is used as primary inputs and intermediates for other manufacturing sectors such as automotive, building and construction and packaging. As sales and service income struggles to match an increasing domestic market, a higher proportion of these inputs is now being provided by imports. • Sales and service income in the chemicals and plastics industry has grown by an average annual rate of 6.2% between 2003-04 to 2006-07 to reach a record level of $33.6 billion. • Chemicals and plastics averaged 9.1% of total manufacturing sales and service income in the three years to 2006-07.
