Autumn 2016 Bike Week 2016 As part of Bike Week this year, we shared a stall with Hackney Cyclists at the Haringey Festival of Cycling in Finsbury Park on Sunday 12th June. Despite the initial inclement weather, the festival was well attended and the stall was busy for most of the afternoon.

We were joined by Cllr Peray Ahmet who is Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, as well as Cllr Toni Mallet (Haringey Council’s Cycling Champion), and Joanne McCartney AM, Deputy Mayor of London.

Our visitors were keen to get information about cycle routes, the work of London Cycling Campaign and the local groups, as well as Living Wightman, the local campaign which is working for the permanent closure of Wightman Road to through motor vehicle traffic. We gave out lots of badges, stickers and TfL cycle route maps, all of which were well received! We were out in force again the next morning, this time co-hosting a “Bike Breakfast” on Wightman Road with Living Wightman. We handed out croissants, bananas and fruit juice to cyclists and some pedestrians, and asked them to sign the petition to keep Wightman road closed to through motor traffic.

'Living Wightman' is an organisation set up to coordinate a residents' campaign to make the temporary closure to through motor traffic permanent, and we support this campaign. If you want to get involved, or simply show support, contact the Living Wightman Campaign on [email protected].

Ride London FreeCycle and HCC feeder ride As part of the RideLondon FreeCycle event on Saturday 30 July, HCC organised a led group ride from Ducketts Common to Bank, to help people get to the main closed roads event (and back home again!). About 40 people joined in the led ride, including several families and some adults, who told us they had only recently started riding and felt the ride had helped them gain the confidence to switch their commutes to bike. A great day out was had by all, and several people asked if we run any other group rides. While we don't have any planned at the moment, if there's enough interest then we could arrange some. If you're interested in joining in (or could help with marshalling or route planning), please let us know by emailing [email protected]

We also invited those cyclists who weren’t members of LCC to consider joining, and gave them information about Haringey Cyclists and the work that we do.

We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month with a start time of 7.15pm at The Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey High Street. Drop in and say hello!

Bikes For Good Causes

Dr Bike Sessions

Bikes For Good Causes (BFGC) is a social enterprise based in Wood Green, N22. It works in partnership with Action For Kids Charitable Trust, a charity supporting young people with learning disabilities. BFGC provides work experience for the young people in their bike shop and cafe.

Haringey Council has again offered FREE Dr Bike sessions on Sundays in the borough during the summer months. The last few sessions of the summer and early autumn will take place in Finsbury Park, Priory Park and at Bruce Castle Park from 2-5pm, usually near the café. There is no need to book – just turn up with your bike. Dr Bike can help with minor adjustments, so if you need any parts, please make sure you bring them with you. The sessions will take place on the following Sundays: Finsbury Park 18th September, 16th October Priory Park

BFGC sells good quality donated bikes at very competitive prices, as well as offering a comprehensive and competitively priced repairs and maintenance service. The Graff Café, located behind the workshop, serves a selection of teas, coffees and cold drinks, and some snacks.

25th September Bruce Castle Park 4th September, 2nd October

If you would like us to feature a community project, a bike shop or a bike friendly cafe in future editions of this newsletter, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. If you’d like to write your own review, please email it to the same address. Please include photos, if possible.

HELP NEEDED The young people are supported in their work experience by staff from Action for Children, and almost all participants in the scheme go on to a paid work placement. You can support the organization by donating an unwanted bike, buying a bike, using the cafe or volunteering.

There’s always a lot going on in Haringey, but there's so much more we could do to improve cycling in the borough if we had your help.
