American Welding Society Central Valley Section Presents AWS President David L. McQuaid FIELD WELDING REPAIRS COMMON PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTION Thursday October 20th College of the Sequoias, Tulare Center Campus 4999 East Bardsley Ave. Tulare Ca. 93274 Presenter: AWS President David L. McQuaid will be presenting on common problems and solutions related to field welding repairs in steel structures. Dave holds a degree in Civil Engineering and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states. Dave has 45 years’ experience and has worked 31 years as the Welding Engineer for American Bridge; who was the constructor of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the Carquinez Bridge in Vallejo. He currently is the President of his own company – DL McQuaid & Associates. Dave has also served for the past 30 years as a member of AWS D1 Main Committee and 20 Years as the Chairman of the D1.5 Bridge Welding Code Committee. Dave’s presentation will provide several case-histories of successful field weld repairs. It will also show that making a weld repair, no matter how complicated or difficult, can usually be done with a 100% degree of success. He will dispel the myth which says when you make multiple repairs in the same location the steel will lose its strength, or that the weld repair is never as strong as the original base metal. Examples in his presentation will touch on the problems associated with improper filler metal storage and handling procedures, inadequate preheat and interpass temperature controls, and using the wrong welding techniques when making repairs.
