4-Wheeler accident claims life of La Center resident by Kelly Paul Editor, Advance Yeoman

BARLOW- Neil Allen Potts of La Center was involved in a 4-wheeler accident at Fish Lake in Barlow on Sunday evening. Several Ballard County Emergency personnel rushed to the scene after having been notified of the accident. Potts was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau where he was pronounced dead. Neil Potts, 22, was a 2008 graduate of Ballard Memorial High School. Visitation for Potts will begin Wednesday 19th at 4:00 pm at Milner and Orr funeral Home in Wickliffe. Funeral services will be held Thursday 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Wickliffe Rural Fire Department hosted its first Octoberfest at the Wickliffe City Park Saturday, Oct. 15. The event included hot dogs and chili, a hay ride and face painting. Lots of folks came out and had a fun filled day of food and friendship, while helping out the fire department. All proceeds were for the Wickliffe Rural Fire Department. Watch for the 2nd Annual Octoberfest at this time next year.

Life Care Center of La Center and Springbridge Rehab prepares shoebox gifts for needy children While most people have just begun to think about raking leaves, football and Thanksgiving dinner, the residents and staff at Life Care Center and SpringBridge Rehab are already getting in the Christmas spirit by helping those in need. As part of the 2011 Operation Christmas Child project, the 70 bed facility has begun collecting shoe boxes full of Christmas gifts to be distributed to millions of boys and girls in over 100 countries around the world. Samaritan’s Purse, the Christian relief organization headed by Franklin Graham. “The shoeboxes show needy children around the world that someone is thinking of them at Christmas”, said Ginger Atkins, Executive Director. “Children who usually don’t receive anything for Christmas are delighted with these gifts.”

Life Care Center of LaCenter and SpringBridge Rehabs staff encourages the Ballard County community to join them in their effort to give these needy children hope during the holidays. Participants are asked to fill a shoebox with small toys (no war related toys), school supplies and personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap, no used or perishable items, no liquids or breakables. Participants are also encouraged to include a picture of themselves, along with their addresses, so the children receiving gifts can write back if the wish. Last year, Life Care Centers of America’s facilities across the nation collected 186,106 boxes for needy children. This Christmas season, Life Care has challenged its facilities and offices nationwide to collect 400,000 boxes. Life Care Center of
