WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP ELIGIBILITY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 1.
Contestants must have worked as a full-time employee in the Industry for no less than one (1) year. Seasonal lay-offs will be recognized as acceptable after a two year employment.

Contestants must be employed as a driver at the time of the Driving Championship and have performed the duties of a professional truck driver for at least 11 of the 12 months prior to the competition.
3.
Contestants must be free of preventable accidents and moving traffic violation convictions for a one (1) year period prior to the Driving Championship entry date.
4.
Contestants should have a reasonable work attendance record. Contestants should be disqualified if the driver has missed more than eleven (11) working days in the one (1) year period prior to the competition date without a doctor's clearance (at the discretion of the OWMA committee).

WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP RULES 1.
A written test dealing with safety, proper driving techniques and rules of the road will be included in the competition. This will be written at Tomlinson Environmental Services, located at 3150 Rideau Road, Ottawa Ontario. This test may be taken verbally with prior notification.

No contestant will be permitted to operate the vehicle which he/she regularly drives. If trucks from a contestant's municipality or company base are used in the competition, the contestant's Supervisor will be responsible to ensure the contestant does not practise on the vehicle to be used in the Truck Driving Championship.
3.
Competitors must be dressed appropriately in their company uniform or long pants and shirt, and wearing acceptable footwear appropriate to be worn on the job.
4.
No contestant will be permitted to practise on the laid out course prior to competition.
5.
A representative of the Championship Committee shall disqualify any contestant who, by a determination of two-thirds of the Committee members present, is guilty of conduct detrimental to the competition or the solid waste collection industry. Contestants shall not have the right to appeal.

This sample exam contains ten questions, the actual written examination will have twenty-five questions. Each question will be worth two points totalling 50 points in the competition. WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP PRE-TRIP INSPECTION DETAILS PLEASE REVIEW – TEST REQUIREMENTS HAVE CHANGED. The driver is always responsible for knowing the mechanical conditions of the vehicle. While the maintenance crew or department is responsible for giving the driver a vehicle that is in top mechanical condition, it is the driver who must ensure, at the start of each trip, that the vehicle assigned is in good condition. The following is a detailed checklist which identifies some of the significant checks which should be made daily. Inform judges as you check for each item, there will be no planted defects. WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP OFF-SET PROBLEM The driver is required to manoeuver the vehicle between one set of barricades, turn sharply and go between a second set of barricades. The movement must be continuous, no stops or repositioning of vehicles permitted without being assessed a demerit. This problem sets up a situation where the driver must watch all four corners of the unit to see that it does not bump or scrape stationary objects. SCORE 50 points for perfect score DEMERIT 10 points for each instance of hitting or scraping a barricade 10 points for each stop ordered by a judge 5 points for each instance of stopping or repositioning vehicle PROBLEM DIMENSIONS Four barricades each ten feet long, are used in sets of two. Place the sets off centre from each other, so that the distance between the two sets is equal to the length of the vehicle and so that one barricade in each set is in line with each other. The distance between barricades in the same set is 11 feet. BARRIERS Use four barricades similar to those illustrated in the offset alley problem.

WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP SERPENTINE PROBLEM - FORWARD AND REVERSE
Driver is required to weave in and out of the barrels in a continuous motion without stopping and without touching a barrel or running over street curb lines. He must go through the problem in a forward and reverse motion. PURPOSE To test driver’s ability to manoeuver vehicle in and out of tight places in forward and backward motion. It simulates conditions that might be encountered when wrecked vehicles on the highway cause jams that he must drive in and then back out of. SCORE 50 points for perfect score in each direction DEMERIT 10 points for each instance of hitting or scraping a barrel 10 points for each stop ordered by a judge 5 points for each instance of stopping or crossing the curb-line PROBLEM DIMENSIONS Distance between each barrel, centre to centre is approximately 32 feet. WIDTH OF STREET 50 feet BARRIERS Any oil drum or similar object will serve as barriers. It is preferred to have two oil drums welded one on top of the other for each barrier.

WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP ALLEY BACK-UP PROBLEM The driver is required to back his vehicle in a continuous movement throughout a simulated alley without touching side barriers or the rear barrier, and he must come within a certain distance of the rear barrier. PURPOSE To test the driver’s ability to manoeuver his vehicle backwards through a narrow space, and to judge his distance to the rear of his vehicle. SCORE 50 points for perfect score DEMERIT 10 points for each instance of hitting side barriers 10 points for each stop ordered by a judge 5 points for each instance of running over a curb-line or taking more than one free pull-up MEASUREMENTS Event not completed or more than 24" from dock 12.1" to 24" from dock 6.1" to 12" from dock Within 6" of dock Hitting rear barricade

SUGGESTED DIMENSIONS Problem is set up in a rectangular shape opening onto a 50 foot wide street. Rectangle is 20 feet deep and can be made by using four 10 foot barricades, two on each side. One 10 foot barricade is used at the end of the problem to simulate a wall. For front loading trucks with rear bubbles, vertically extend the rear barrier on the driver’s side or install tabs on bubbles. Width of rectangle is 10 ft. 3 inches. Driver is required to drive up the street past problem and cut his vehicle back into the rectangle. BARRIERS Use barricades illustrated on the following page.

The driver is required to drive his vehicle in a continuous movement through a close right hand turn. PURPOSE To test driver’s ability to manoeuvre his vehicle through close turns without impacting on curbs, walls, abutments or parked vehicles. SCORE 50 points for perfect score DEMERIT 10 points for each instance of crossing a curb line 10 points for each instance of stopping or repositioning vehicle MEASUREMENTS Hit barrel or more than 30" from barrel 24.1" to 30" from barrel 18.1" to 24" from barrel 12.1" to 18" from barrel 6.1" to 12" from barrel within 6" of barrel

BARRIERS Use a barrel or cone to simulate corner. Measure the closest point the right rear outside dual passed the corner point. The road width is 25 feet.

PURPOSE To test driver’s ability to judge the width of the truck as it passes through two rows of narrowing obstacles. SCORE 50 points for perfect score DEMERIT 20 points for hitting each of the first six markers 10 points for hitting each of the last four markers 20 points for each instance of stopping or any jerky movement PROBLEM DIMENSIONS Two rows of five markers are set up with 15 feet between each marker in a row. The width of each set of markers diminishes as follows: First set Second set Third set Fourth set Fifth set

BARRIERS Oil drums can be used. If pivoting markers are used they should be at least 40" high. Barriers are set at a distance of the truck width plus the clearance as shown.

WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP STRAIGHT LINE PROBLEM
The driver is required to run the right wheels of his vehicle between two rows of markers without stopping and without touching or displacing any of the markers. The driver must remain seated at all times. PURPOSE This problem determines the driver’s ability to locate the right wheels of his vehicle at any position on the road. SCORE 50 points for perfect score. DEMERIT 10 points for each instance of stopping during test 5 points for each instance of striking, touching or running over any marker or for straddling or passing around any markers. PROBLEM DIMENSIONS Markers are placed in parallel rows. The distance between the rows is 6" greater than the total width of the rear duals. The distance between each pair of markers is 10 feet. BARRIERS Markers may consist of sponge rubber or tennis balls 3 inches in diameter. It is possible to use plastic blocks or hard wood blocks. If wood is used, you need several extra ones because they will break if run over.

The driver is required to approach a line in a continuous movement and to stop his vehicle with the front bumper within 6 inches of the line. Driver is not allowed to lean out of window to judge his distance. PURPOSE This problem tests the driver’s ability to judge the location of his front bumper. DEMERITS Vehicle crossed line or stop more than 30" from line Stop within 6" of line Stop between 6" and 30" from line
- 50 demerits - 0 demerits - 2 demerits for each inch beyond the 6" mark
10 points for each instance of stopping more than once 10 points for leaning out of the window or lifting off the seat POSITION MEASUREMENT From the closest point on the bumper excluding bumper bolts, etc. BARRIERS Use a board which can be relocated for each competitor. It should be a 12 foot long 1" x 10" board painted white.

WASTE INDUSTRY (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP SCORING PRINCIPLES SCORING The contestant must prove to be a superior refuse truck driver by exhibiting knowledge of the job (written examination), of the equipment (pre-trip inspection), and by demonstrating operational skills (field test course). The champion for each class of competition is selected on the basis of total cumulative points. The maximum possible “total cumulative points” are:

DRIVING TEST The Operational Skills Test is comprised of problems which are designed to simulate conditions that characterize everyday operations. The driving problems are worth a maximum of 50 points each. Judging of contestants in the Field Tests is based upon the driver’s ability to follow instruction, to limit stops and changes of direction to those permitted by the rules, to avoid hits and instances of going out of bounds and to position the vehicles close to measuring points in certain problems. Properly performing these tasks for each problem results in 50 points per problem from which demerits are recorded (points subtracted) for errors. TIME PENALTY The Truck Driving Championship driver must meet the time requirements of 15 minutes. Any driver going over 15 minutes will be disqualified and will receive no points. DISQUALIFICATION All driving problems must be attempted. Any driver who fails to attempt a problem during the driving test will be disqualified and will receive no points. ADJUDICATION Questions, challenges of scoring, and interpretations of rules shall be adjudicated by the Committee whose decisions shall be final.
