In those six games, the Cardinals have scored an average of six runs a game. However, Ball State is only batting .231 in league road games. SS Alex Maloney (.318), 1B Caleb Stayton (.304) and RF Alex Call (.300) are the top hitters in those games. RHP BJ Butler has picked up two MAC road wins in relief this season. He has tallied eight strikeouts in eight innings pitched in those games. 8Series History: Ball State leads the all-time series by a count of 12-3. The two teams first met in 2008 with Ball State winning the initial seven meetings between the two squads. Last year, the Cardinals took two of three games at Ball Diamond. C Jarett Rindfleisch went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, a triple, five RBIs and four runs scored in the 16-8 win on March 29, 2015. 8Two for Call: RF Alex Call hit home runs in back-to-back innings in Ball State’s 13-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday. Call finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He became the second Cardinal to hit two home runs in a game in 2016. C Jarett Rindfleisch accomplished the feat on March 11 in a 7-1 win at LSU.

8Speaking of Home Runs: The Cardinals are 16-2 in games this season when hitting a home run. 1B Caleb Stayton (eight), RF Alex Call (eight) and C Jarett Rindfleisch (seven) are the team leaders in that category. 8Shake Up in Rotation: Ball State is mixing up its starting rotation this weekend. RHP Colin Brockhouse is expected to make his first MAC start on Friday. LHP Kevin Marnon will get the ball on Saturday while Sunday’s game will feature either RHP Brendan Burns or LHP Matt Haro. 2016 Ball State Baseball Game Notes HC Rich Maloney Rich Maloney, head coach at Ball State, won his 700th game as a collegiate head coach in 2015. He is in his second head coaching stint at BSU, originally serving from 1996-2002 and returning in 2013. He has led Ball State to four MAC titles as well as its only two 40-win seasons in program history (1997, 1999). In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). A year later, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament championship game. From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 57 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Maloney was an All-American collegiate baseball player at Western Michigan and spent six seasons playing in the Atlanta Braves organization. He is currently serving as the ABCA second vice president.

Game Notes 8Among the National Leaders: RF Alex Call enters the weekend ranked in the top10 nationally in doubles (1st), runs (3rd) and total bases (8th). Meanwhile, 1B Caleb Stayton is ranked second nationally in RBIs. He has 15 multiRBI games this season, including last Sunday against Bowling Green – 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. 8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: RHP BJ Butler became the ninth Cardinal to earn MAC West Player or Pitcher of the Week honors on April 28. Butler ranks second in the MAC with eight saves. Butler has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances. He picked up two MAC wins at Central Michigan on April 16-17, pitching the final three innings on Saturday and the last two frames on Sunday. 8Making a Splash in the Majors: After 751 minor league games, former Ball State Cardinals baseball player OF Jeremy Hazelbaker made his MLB debut on April 3 for the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his first start on April 5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates where he went 1-for3 with a solo home run. In the Cardinals’ home opener on April 11, Hazelbaker went 4-for-4, with a triple and a double. He also had a diving catch in left field that helped the Cards to a 10-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The outfielder was a part of the Ball State Cardinals team from 2007-09. 8Preserving the Lead: Ball State is 23-0 this season when leading after seven innings. RHP BJ Butler has tallied eight saves in 18 appearances. His most recent save came on April 23 versus Bowling Green. 8MAC West Player of the Week: 1B Caleb Stayton took home the honors on April 11. Stayton went a combined 11-for-17 (.647) in four games against Western Michigan and Xavier during that week. In the 21-1 win over Western Michigan, Stayton tied a career high with six RBIs. He ended the game going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and his first career triple. Stayton currently ranks second nationally with 58 RBIs, which is the most by a Ball State player since 2010 (Kolbrin Vitek, 68).

Marnon held Western Michigan to a .160 batting average, while tallying five strikeouts in the 21-1 victory. This marked the second time this season that Ball State players have been named both Player and Pitcher of the Week. 8MAC West Player of the Week: RF Alex Call took home the honors on April 4 after tallying three hits in all four games against Valparaiso and Ohio that week. In the 17-14 win over Ohio, Call finished a single shy of the cycle. Half of Call’s hits that week went for extra bases as he tallied three doubles, a triple and two home runs. Call scored 11 times and knocked in 10 runs as well. 8Runs, Runs and More Runs: The Cardinals exploded for 20 runs in their victory over Ohio on April 3, marking the most runs scored since the Cardinals matched that same number on April 5, 2014 in a 20-5 win over Eastern Michigan. Ball State’s top three batters in the lineup – RF Alex Call, SS Alex Maloney and 1B Caleb Stayton – combined to go 10-for16 at the plate with three home runs, two doubles, nine runs scored and 13 RBIs. 8Clear the Bases!: 1B Caleb Stayton hit a grand slam in Ball State’s 20-3 win over Ohio on April 3. It marked Ball State’s first grand slam since C Jarett Rindfleisch cleared the bases on March 29, 2015 in a 16-8 win over Buffalo. 8Ball State Sweeps MAC Honors: SS Alex Maloney and RHP Zach Plesac took home the MAC Player/Pitcher of the Week honors on March 28. Maloney finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs in Ball State’s 9-8 comeback win over Purdue on March 22. In the March 27 win over Miami, Maloney hit two doubles and scored twice in the 9-6 victory. Plesac arguably put together one of the best collegiate pitching performances of the season at Miami on March 26. The righty tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout in the 9-0 win over the RedHawks. He struck out a career-high 11 batters and only allowed one base runner the final four innings.

8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: LHP Kevin Marnon took home his second Pitcher of the Week award for his April 10th outing against Western Michigan. He pitched seven scoreless innings, only giving up four singles.

Game Notes 8RBI Machine: 1B Caleb Stayton enters this weekend leading the league in RBIs with 58. The junior racked up six RBIs in the 11-5 win versus Milwaukee on Feb. 26, the most by a Cardinal since Kenny Mahala recorded eight RBIs in 2011 against Bowling Green. Stayton has tallied at least five RBIs in three games this season. 8Standout Bullpen: In Ball State’s 9-8 win over Purdue on March 22, the Cardinals’ bullpen scattered four hits over the final seven innings and only allowed one run. RHP Zach Plesac was especially effective, going 3.0 innings, striking out three and only giving up a single.

8Spring Break Wrap Up: Ball State went 5-4 on its Spring Break trip which included games against three nationally ranked teams – No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 18 Coastal Carolina and No. 6 LSU. The Cardinals defeated LSU on March 11, marking the fourth consecutive year Ball State has defeated a nationally ranked team. Ball State hit four home runs and LHP Kevin Marnon limited the Tigers to one run in 5.2 innings in that win. Five starters hit .300 or better during the Spring Break travels, led by C Jarett Rindfleisch, who hit .345 (10-of-29) with two home runs, four RBIs, seven runs scored and six walks.

8One Big Inning: Ball State racked up 10 runs in the third inning in its 10-0 win over Dayton on March 19. The 10 runs were the most scored by the Cardinals in one inning since Ball State tallied 10 runs in the third inning against Toledo on May 14, 2009. 1B Caleb Stayton, SS Alex Maloney and RF Alex Call all homered in the big inning.

8Spring Break Wrap Up, Part 2: Ball State put together a few season highs on the 10-day road trip. The Cardinals tallied a then season-best 14 hits at LSU on March 13, four home runs at LSU on March 11 and 14 walks at Savannah State on March 9. The pitchers piled up a season-high 14 strikeouts at Savannah State on March 8.

8MAC West Player of the Week: CF Matt Eppers was named the MAC West Division Player of the Week on March 21 thanks to his consistent performance in the fourgame series against Dayton. The junior led Ball State with a .615 batting average that weekend against the Flyers. The outfielder tallied at least one hit and scored a run in all four games. In the series finale, Eppers equaled a team season high with four hits. He not only went 4-for-4 at the plate, but also scored Ball State’s lone run.

8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: LHP Kevin Marnon was named Mid-American Conference West Pitcher of the Week after his performance in the 7-1 win at No. 6 LSU on March 11. Marnon went 5.2 innings against LSU, struck out four batters and allowed just one run in the win. The lefty teamed with junior RHP Zach Plesac to hold the Tigers to a then season-low one run. The win was Ball State’s first over an SEC team since defeating Kentucky by a score of 10-8 in March 2014.

8Wins Vs. Ranked Teams: Ball State has notched at least one win over a ranked team in four straight seasons. Below are the wins over ranked programs since 2009: 3/11/16: 7-1 vs. #6 LSU 2/28/15: 2-1 vs. #25 Illinois 3/7/14: 10-8 (10) vs. #22 Kentucky 4/17/13: 5-3 vs. #19 Indiana 2/20/10: 5-2 vs. #15 Arkansas 3/20/10: 5-1 vs. #7 Louisville 4/22/09: 20-8 vs. #23 Ohio State

8Cardinals Take Two at Savannah State: Ball State picked up two wins over Savannah State on March 8-9. Junior RF Alex Call went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored in the 7-3 win on March 8. On March 9, six Ball State pitchers limited Savannah State to four singles and a double in the 10-1 win. Sophomore RHP Mitch Gibson earned his first collegiate victory thanks to tossing 3.1 innings of relief without allowing a hit.

8Rindfleisch Added to Johnny Bench Award Watch List: C Jarett Rindfleisch was one of four catchers from the MAC nominated for the Johnny Bench Award. Rindfleisch was a 2015 ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast Region first team selection thanks to finishing second in the MAC in home runs (10), third in RBIs (47) and third in slugging percentage (.518) last year. He also threw out 18 would-be base stealers in 2015.

8MAC West Player of the Week: 3B Sean Kennedy was named Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week after his solid weekend at the Chanticleer Classic on March 4-6. Kennedy led the Cardinals in batting average (.438) and RBIs (four) during the four games. He also provided the gamewinning hit in the 4-3 win over Cincinnati, a sixth inning RBI single.

In this first-of-a-kind trip for the squad, the team played five scrimmages, visited a sugar cane village, attended a winter league baseball game and visited an orphanage. The Cardinals went 3-1-1 on the trip, wrapping it up with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals affiliate academy. 8Brockhouse Shines in the Summer: Colin Brockhouse was named to Perfect Game’s 2015 Summer Collegiate All-America team.
