R HOUSE
R House is a community food hall located in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Serving as the launch pad for Baltimore’s emerging chefs, the 350-seat, 10,000 sq ft ground-floor space was conceived as a catalyst for the rebirth of the old working-class neighborhood and features 10 food stalls, central bar, shared back-of-house support spaces and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor seating. The intent of the project was to transform the 50,000 sq ft vacant auto body-shop garage into a new center for the community and a hub for its further economic development.

R House involved an inclusive design process that engaged various stakeholders in a series of focus group meetings, predevelopment community events and design collaborations with local artist and artisans. Inspired by the mixture of residential and industrial structures in the area, a common feature of Baltimore’s industrial past, the spatial concept evolved around the idea of merging the two building types. By erasing the dividing walls between neighboring row houses, the sense of togetherness meets the rational, productive space of the warehouse to create an open and inclusive communal marketplace. The material palette of steel, wood and concrete complements the preserved residual textures of the old structure and shapes the identity of the new neighborhood by providing a platform for creative expression for the entire community.

The industrial heritage of the old working-class neighborhood is honored by the thoughtful repurposing of the vacant auto body-shop garage and its transformation into a vibrant community amenity. the concept for the space IS inspired by the iconic Baltimore R(ow) House and envisioned as a row of houses, similar to those at the opposite side of the street, where dividing walls between neighbors are removed to create one shared experience of living, dining, cooking and playing at (OU)R House.
