BEST OF QUEENS: FOOD
BAYSIDE, Queens – NYC-based burger franchise Bareburger has opened its tenth restaurant in three years, with a new location on Bell Boulevard. After the doors opened Tuesday evening, customers enjoyed burgers, french fries and milkshakes on tabletops made from recycled trees. “Bayside is a location that I’m just becoming familiar with, but the people that work here and live here say that [Bayside residents] needed a great burger,” said Bareburger Group Executive and Astoria resident Debra Jans. Manager of the Bayside Bareburger location Bobby Kumar, of Huntington, Long Island, said local residents were anticipating the grand opening for months. “You’ll be surprised how many people are returning customers that have been to other locations and how excited they are, and how many e-mails we get on a daily basis saying that, ‘we’re so excited that you guys are opening’” said Kumar.

animals that were grass fed and pasture raised. “There’s a lot of studies being done now showing that some of the more conventional methods of farming and the things we put on our land and inject in our animals maybe aren’t the best things for our human bodies so I think that that’s something people take in consideration,” said Jans. “Not only are we a great burger, but we’re a better burger for you.” Originally a country girl raised in Minnesota, Jans moved to New York City in 2001. In 2009, Bareburger hired her as on of their first team members in Astoria. Ten locations later, this latest restaurant still reflects the original mission: all-natural from top to bottom. “Not only do we want our food to be better options for our guests, but we want our locations to reflect the fact that we’re eco-friendly as well,” she said. The floors at Bareburger are made from bamboo. The ceilings are reclaimed tin siding from deconstructed barns. Ironically, everything looks brand new. Customers can choose beef, lamb, wild boar, elk, bison, ostrich, turkey or chicken for their burgers. Non-meat eaters can choose from a veggie or portabella mushroom burger and any salad can be turned into a wrap if desired. For many parents with small children, there is also a kids menu. One of the more popular items, The Jalapeño Express (pictured above), is recommended with elk. Indeed, this is no ordinary burger. The Jalapeño Expres is adorned with pepperjack cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, raw red onion, jalapeño relish, horseradish mayo and chipotle ketchup. For those who like a little kick, the Express provides enough heat to satisfy. The jalapeño relish didn’t overwhelm the elk, which was incredibly tender. Zagat’s 2012 New York City Restaurant Survey ranked Bareburger as the fourth best burger in the five boroughs. At least for this reporter, the meal lives up to its hype. According to Jans, Bareburger will continue to expand as investors look across the country for opportunities to open new locations. There are three Bareburger locations in Queens: two in Astoria and one on Austin Street in Forest Hills.
