Frequently Asked Questions Why is my child being referred to the Basic Skills Program? • If you child is having difficulty mastering grade level standards, your child’s teacher may feel that he/she needs additional instructional support. Will I know my child is being referred to the program? • Prior to referral, your child’s teacher will regularly communicate with you regarding your child’s strengths and weaknesses in Language Arts and/or Math. If your child’s teacher feels your child needs extra help to master grade level skills, they will recommend your child to the Basic Skills Program. How will I know how my child is learning in Basic Skills classes? • Students in grades Kindergarten4th Grade will receive a BSI progress report during Trimester 1 and Trimester 3. These reports will be uploaded to Genesis and available for view under the documents tab. • Students in grades 5-8 will receive a Pass or Fail on each Marking Period report card. In addition, the Basic Skills Instructor will provide comments to you to view. • All Basic Skills Instructors are available for conferences if necessary. You can also reach them via email or phone.
What is Basic Skills? Basic Skills Instruction is a district-wide supplemental instruction program to provide students with reinforcement of skills in the areas of reading, writing, phonics, and mathematics.

What are the entry procedures for the Basic Skills Program? • Your child’s classroom teacher will complete a referral form and submit to the Principal’s office. • The Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction and the Principal will review the submitted data and approve or deny the teacher’s request to enter your child in the Basic Skills Program.

What criteria are used to determine eligibility into the Basic Skills Program?
• If you child qualifies for Basic Skills Instruction, you will be notified by mail. • Once you confirm your child’s participation in the program, Basic Skills Instruction will begin.
What are the exit procedures from the Basic Skills Program? • If your child is making satisfactory progress, the BSI program may no longer be necessary. In that case, the student must be formally dismissed from the program. • The classroom teacher will contact you to let you know of removal from the program. • The Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction and Principal will approve or deny request.
Basic Skills Instruction is an additional instructional period outside of the General Education Classroom Setting. Students will be pulled out to a small group setting with a few other students and the Basic Skills Instruction. Basic Skills classes are held for both Language Arts and Math. During small group instruction, students will be working to master individual learning goals. The Classroom Teacher and the Basic Skills Instructor will collaborate to determine the goals for your child. Goals are established based upon an area in need of improvement.
