THE NEWS OUT of the Lone Star Conference office last week that the league had gained a new member and an affiliate in football was greeted with enthusiasm. There had been rumors floating around about the future of the conference and this item showed that the league will continue to be one of the strongest in NCAA Division II. Texas-Permian Basin joins the league in 2016 in all sports, including football. The Falcons will play their first intercollegiate football that season. Oklahoma Panhandle State will come into the conference as an affiliate member in football. The addition of the Falcons and Aggies will give the LSC nine football schools. UTPB will help the league baseball alignment. There are only six LSC programs currently with baseball. MEMBERS OF THE Dave Campbell Texas Football staff answers questions periodically from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. One of the questions last week was, “Were there any Lone Star Conference DII signees you look at as sleepers that you thought would go DI?” E.J. Holland answered that “one of the biggest steals of signing day actually occurred at the Division II level. I’m talking about Texas A&M-Kingsville coming away with Sinton quarterback Tyler Handson.” Holland said Handson has been one of the best players in “all of Texas over the past two years.” He predicted Handson will make an impact for the Javelinas “from Day 1.” Over his junior and senior seasons, the signee had 4,179 passing yards, 3,874 rushing yards and 103 total touchdowns. “That’s just absurd,” Holland said. He also said that another key signee for TAMUK was Corpus Christi Flour Bluff wide receiver Aaron Dilworth. He was the most valuable player on the All-South Texas team picked by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. “Dilworth is a big play waiting to happen on the outside.” Ironically, they played at different schools but Handson and Dilworth are good friends. EVEN THOUGH THEY have participated as a team in indoor track and field for only the past few years, the Javelinas are eighth among NCAA Division II schools in number of men’s national individual champions produced. The Javelina men’s indoor champions are: …Patrick Delice, 55-meter dash, 1993. …Matt Hickl, pole vault, 1999. …Roberto Garza, shot put, 2000. …1600-meter relay team (Carlton Williams, Brandon Brisco, Erroll Harris, Shannon Washington, 2005. …Jonathan Woodson, 200-meter dash, 2012. Cameron’s women are 13-9 overall and 10-3 in the LSC. Jazzmine Robinson, 5-6 senior guard from Las Vegas, Nev., is the statistical leader, averaging 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds a game. Brandi Leal, 5-6 junior guard from Amarillo, averages 12.8 points a game. The Javelinas will be on the road Saturday for a doubleheader against Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. The women’s game is set for 4 p.m. and the men’s game will follow. Lone Star Conference Adds New Member, Affiliate

The Lone Star Conference gained a new full-time member and another affiliate member last week. Texas-Permian Basin will gain full membership in the conference beginning in 2016-17. Oklahoma Panhandle State will become an affiliate member of the league in football, beginning in 2016. The LSC will have 10 full-time members and two other schools with affiliate memberships. Harding of Arkansas participates in the league in men’s and women’s cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. UTPB will have 14 NCAA Division II sports when it enters the LSC: football, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The sports Texas A&MKingsville and UTPB will have in common are football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, baseball, women’s golf and women’s tennis. Located in Odessa, TexasPermian Basin was founded in 1973 and has more than 5,000 students. “The success of UTPB student athletes both as athletes and students is the primary reason for joining the Lone Star Conference,” David Watts, school president, said. “Students will not have to spend as much time traveling and they will be competing against more familiar teams. I am grateful to the Lone Star Conference for the invitation and to the Regents (UT System Board of Regents) for their support.” The Falcons are currently members of the Heartland Conference and will be in that league through the 2015-16 school year. UTPB has won six conference titles since joining the Heartland in 2006: volleyball championship and tournament title, baseball conference trophy, men’s basketball conference

championship and women’s basketball conference title and conference tournament trophy. The Falcon men’s and women’s swimming teams will continue to be members of the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference. The LSC doesn’t decide swimming titles. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, softball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis. “The Lone Star Conference will be a great fit for us as several member schools are in close proximity to use,” Steve Aicinena, UTPB athletic director, said. “There is also a higher name recognition for Lone Star schools in this region of the state. We look forward to great competition in our new conference.” “We are extremely pleased to have a program with great athletic and academic traditions in UTPB joining the Lone Star Conference,” Brian May, chair of the LSC President’s Council and president at Angelo State, said. “The addition of TexasPermian Basin to the Lone Star Conference is a plus for the league,” Dr. Steven Tallant, president at Texas A&MKingsville, said. “UTPB has a strong presence in the state academically and athletically and its athletic teams have continued to strengthen and have proven to be competition in NCAA Division II. “The decision to have Oklahoma Panhandle State join the LSC will give the conference nine football-playing institutions and this will make it much easier for all of us to fill a schedule each season. These two moves have strengthened an already strong conference.” Panhandle State will become eligible for the LSC football

championship beginning in 2016 and will also compete for weekly and postseason awards. It will be a voting member of the football coaches’ advisory group. The Aggies will actually become part of the LSC scene this fall when it will take part in the LSC playoffs. It will host the No. 5 seed team Nov. 7 and will travel to the loser of game No. 3 on Nov. 14. Panhandle posted a 7-3 record last season and had the No. 1 passing efficiency defense (81.26) in NCAA Division II. Three Former Javelinas Sign With Indoor Pro Teams

Three former Texas A&MKingsville football players have signed contracts with professional teams. Zane Brown and Robert Williams signed with the Texas Revolution and Robert Armstrong was signed by the Wichita Falls Nighthawks. The Revolution is in the Champions Indoor Football League and the Nighthawks will compete in the Indoor Football League. The trio finished their career with the Javelinas in 2013. Brown had 67 tackles and 3.5 sacks his senior year and was first-team Academic All-America and second team All-Lone Star Conference. Brown was a graduate assistant coach with the Javelinas last fall. Williams, who played with the Javelina basketball team before finishing out his career with the football squad, had 88 tackles is senior season and was secondteam All-Lone Star Conference.
