THE JAVELINA MEN’S first-half defense in the team’s win over Angelo State last week in the Steinke Center was as good as I’ve ever seen. Angelo entered the game averaging 83.9 points a game, and the figure had been much higher earlier in the season. The Javelinas held the Rams to five points in the first 10 minutes of play and to 14 points the first half. The Javelinas have one of the best defensive scoring figures in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II. They have allowed 67.7 points a game in a league that features several teams ranked high in the NCAA in scoring. In the two Javelina victories over the Rams last week, the TAMUK defense held the opponent to 53 points in the first game and was even tougher in the second game in San Angelo, limiting the Rams to 50 points.
FORMER JAVELINA HIGH jumper Jeron Robinson, who was a many-time national champion and All-American while with the Javelinas in 2013-16, is now on the professional circuit and some of the meets are nationally televised. Robinson was in the Grand Prix last weekend in Boston and will be competing in the Millrose Games Saturday in New York City. This week’s meet will be in The Armory where Robinson has competed as a Javelina. The high jump is set for 3:40 p.m. (CST) Saturday and the meet will be televised from 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CST) on NBC Sports Network. Robinson’s sponsor is Nike. Robinson finished fourth in the Boston meet, clearing 6-10.75. He has consistently cleared heights in the 7-4 and 7-5 range in his career but is coming back from an injury that handicapped him in the final few meets of his collegiate career. TWO FOOTBALL TRANSFERS who are with the Javelina team this spring come from families with rich athletic histories. Beau Reilly, 6-6, 190-pound junior quarterback from Valley Center, Calif., is a transfer from the University of Hawaii. Brother A.J. played football and basketball at the University of Utah before transferring to Brigham Young-Hawaii to play basketball. Another brother, Trevor, played at Utah, was with the New York Jets for two seasons and was with the Miami Dolphins last season. And a third brother, Drew, was a defensive back at Brigham Young. His father, Russ, played basketball at BYU-Hawaii. Keith Whitely, 5-9, 190-pound senior running back from LaPorte, is a transfer from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. His father, Keith Sr., lettered at the University of Houston and was his son’s position coach in high school. An uncle, Antonio Armstrong, was a four-year letterman at linebacker for Texas A&M before playing with the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco Forty-Niners. (Continued on Page 3)

NCAA DIVISION II approved several proposals at the recent national convention that are meant to better assist athletes in paying for their college education. The new financial aid legislation that will take effect in August 2018 will do the following: …Establish a model where only institutional athletics aid is counted against individual and team equivalency limits. …Eliminate the ability for schools to issue term-by-term financial aid awards. …Allow schools to increase an athlete’s athletically related financial aid at any time, for any reason. The division also passed a health and safety proposal that will increase the decision-making authority of medical personnel in college sports. The new legislation, which takes effect in August, will require schools to establish an administrative structure where the primary athletics health care providers would have unchallengeable authority on medical management and return-toplay decisions. It also will require schools to designate an athletics health care administrator to oversee the school’s administration and delivery of athletics health care and ensure best practices are followed. Another new approved proposal will take effect in August and will provide Division II athletes additional time off in their nonchampionship seasons. The change sets new limits on the amount of time college athletes can spend on countable athletically related activities during the non-championship seasons while also simplifying the legislation. THE NCAA PLAYING Rules Oversight Panel approved three experimental rules in softball designed to increase the pace of play in conference games for this season. While the experimental rules were for the autonomy conferences, any league from any of the three NCAA divisions may submit a request to use the three experimental rules during the 2017 season. The rules will be applied in conference games for the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference. The rules are: …Restricting the number of charged conferences, either offensive or defensive, to six per team. Teams may use two conferences per inning. Each team is allowed one conference, offensive or defensive, for each extra inning. The team representative or player who initiates any additional charged offensive or defensive conference will be ejected. The current rules allowed each team one offensive and one defensive conference per inning. …Defensive teams will not be allowed to huddle at the pitcher’s mound after an out. Teams will still be allowed to throw the ball around the infield, but the ball must then be thrown directly to the pitcher. The penalty for huddling at the mound the first time will be a warning and any subsequent violations will result in a ball being awarded to the next batter. The current rule allows teams to huddle after an out. …Teams will have 90 seconds between innings before they are required to be ready to resume play. When the last defensive player crosses the foul line closest to her dugout, the third base umpire, or base umpire in a two-person crew, will start the time using a stopwatch. During the 90 seconds, the pitcher is allowed an unlimited number of warmup pitches. With 30 seconds left, the base umpire will announce how much time is left to the dugouts. When the 90 seconds haveexpired, the defensive team must be in position to start, including the pitcher in position to throw a pitch and the offensive team must have its batter in the box ready for a first pitch. If the defensive team isn’t ready after 90 seconds, the batter will receive a ball. If the offensive team doesn’t have a batter in the batter’s box ready to hit, a strike will be assessed to the batter. Currently, there is no time limit between innings but the pitchers are limited to five warmup pitches. There has been no announcement from the Lone Star Conference in reference to the possibility of employing the new rules. Ironically, softball has initiated the new rules despite being considered one of the fastest-moving sports. (Continued on Page 5)
