Basketball Rules Regulations published in the Wichita State University Intramural Sports Captain’s Manual will be the governing policies for all Intramural Sports. Team captains are responsible for possessing a thorough understanding of these policies and their implications. Participation in all Intramural Sports events is voluntary. The Campus Recreation Department and the Competitive Sports Program assume no responsibility for physical and/or mental injuries. Basic first aid will be available. All participants play at their own risk. The rules found in NFHS Basketball Rules Book will be in effect with the following interpretations and exceptions. Points of emphasis and all recent rule changes will be in bold type. 1. Location a. Games will be played in the Heskett Center gym. 2. Schedule a. The league format will be pool play, followed by a single-elimination bracket playoff system. b. If your team is unable to make it to your game be sure to contact the IM office at 316-978-5284 by 3pm the day of or 3pm Friday for Sunday games and you will be given a default instead of a forfeit. c. Regular season schedules and playoff brackets will be posted online. At the end of the season, teams that qualify for the playoffs will be scheduled to play at times that will be different than their regular season time, so be sure that you have enough players listed on the roster. Remember that only players who are registered on www.imleagues.com and have properly signed onto a team are eligible to play in the playoffs. 3. Players and Substitutions a. All players must be on the IMLeagues roster and present their SHOCKER ID Card when checking in for the game. b. Teams may have up to 16 players on their roster. c. Games will be played with 5 players on the court. A minimum of 4 players is needed to avoid a forfeit. The officials on the court can choose to continue a game if a team falls below 4 players, but has a chance of winning. d. Eligibility is subject to the rules and regulations set in the Captain’s Manual.

4. Jersey a. Players of opposing teams must wear contrasting colored jerseys. Players of the same team must wear the same colored jersey. The visiting team is responsible for avoidance of similarity color. Pinnies will be provided. Any individual using a pinnie MUST wear a t-shirt under it. b. Each player must have a permanent and visible number. No taped on numbers will be permitted. 5. Illegal Equipment a. A player wearing illegal equipment shall not be permitted to play. This applies to any equipment which, in the opinion of the Referee, is dangerous or confusing. Wearing illegal equipment during play will result in a technical foul on the player. Types of equipment or substances which shall always be declared illegal include: i. Headwear containing any hard, unyielding, stiff material, including billed hats, or items containing exposed knots. ii. Jewelry (except taped down Medical Alert jewelry) iii. Casts iv. Leg and knee braces made of hard, unyielding material, unless covered on both sides and all edges overlapped, and any other hard substance unless covered with at least ½” of closed cell, slow recovery rubber or other material of similar thickness and physical properties. v. Any slippery or sticky foreign substance on any equipment or exposed part of the body. vi. Exposed metal on clothes or person. vii. Basketball or tennis type shoes must be worn while on the main floor by EVERYONE. No dress shoes, boots, sandals, or other shoes with marking soles are allowed. 6. GAME TIME a. Playing Time and Intermissions. i. Games will be two (2) 18-minute halves with a running clock except in the last 30 seconds of the first half and the last 2 minutes of the second half. b. Overtime i. Regular season games that are tied at the end of regulation time will be considered a tie game. During playoffs a tie will result in a three (3) minute overtime with each team granted one (1) timeout throughout the duration of overtime. Player and team fouls carry over to overtime, but timeouts DO NOT. 7. START OF THE GAME a. Start of Play i. The beginning of the game and each extra period will start with a jump ball. The second half begins with the team owning the possession arrow inbounding the ball from midcourt.

8. The Game a. Any team failing to report and/or not ready to play at game time shall forfeit to their opponents unless the opposing captain chooses to waive the forfeit win (within a fiveminute span). The game will be played using an adjusted clock based on the start of the game. GAMETIME IS FORFEIT TIME!! b. A team will be limited to three (3) time-outs per game. Time-outs will be one (1) minute in length; teams must be ready to play immediately. The game clock will stop for charged time-outs. Any team granted a timeout with none remaining, will receive a technical foul c. Only officials, players (including substitutes) and one coach per team wearing proper shoes are permitted on the main floor. d. Coaches must sign in using their WSU ID to be allowed on the team bench to coach. Coaches must be eligible WSU Students/Faculty/Staff to participate as a coach. e. Teams are not permitted to be on the main floor until their game time. Any team failing to comply will be assessed a Technical Foul and the game will begin with the opponent being awarded two (2) technical shots and the ball out of bounds at mid-court. Continued disregard for this regulation will result in the team being eliminated for the remainder of the season. Basketballs shall not be bounced, dribbled, passed nor be thrown against the wall in the corridors of the facilities; violators will be ruled ineligible for Intramural Sports Participation. f. Substitutes must report to the scorekeeper before entering the game and must be signaled on to the court by an official. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in a Technical Foul. g. Players who sustain injury causing an open wound will be required to leave the game. A player may not re-enter the contest until the flow of bodily fluids is stopped and the wound covered. h. Any profanity or degrading of the officials will result in a technical foul. Continued verbal harassment will result in a 2nd technical foul and expulsion from the game. Anyone expelled from a game will be expected to leave the gym. Failure to comply results in forfeiture of the game. i. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct of spectators and players may result in ejection and/or forfeiture of the game. Spectators must remain in the out-of-play areas. Only players are permitted in the playing area. j. Any team who acquires three (3) conduct technical fouls during a game will be forfeited.

9. Scoring a. Technical and Flagrant Fouls WILL be shot. The offended team will receive two (2) attempts and the ball out of bounds. b. MERCY RULE: i. The game will be ended before the time expires when: 1. 50 points or more anytime in the 2nd half 2. 30 points or more 5 minutes or less in 2nd half 3. 20 points or more 2 minutes or less in 2nd half 10. Fouls a. Common Fouls will result in the ball being awarded to the offended team at the spot where the foul occurred. b. Shooting Fouls, if unsuccessful will result in either two or three free throw attempts. If successful, points and one free throw attempt will be awarded. c. Technical, Intentional and Flagrant Fouls will result in two free throws attempts, the ball to the offended team, and possible ejection. d. Five (5) fouls (personal and technical combined) result in disqualification from the game. On the seventh (7) team fouls in each half the bonus situation is in effect, and after ten (10) team fouls the double bonus will be in effect. Prior to the bonus situation “common fouls” will not be shot; the ball will be awarded out of bounds. e. Bonus situations with a common foul will result in a 1-and-1 attempt and 2 shot attempt if in Double Bonus. f. The position is as follows; players must be in one (1) of the six (6) marked lane spaces (excluding the lane spaces closest to the basket) or be positioned behind the free throw line extended and the three (3) point arch. Players in MARKED lane spaces may enter the free throw lane as soon as the ball hits the rim, backboard, or until the free throw ends. The shooter and all players not in a marked lane space may NOT break the plane of the free throw line until the ball touches the rim, backboard, or until the free throw ends. 11. Special Provisions a. Any disputed discussions or protests based on rules (not judgment) will be solved on the floor during the first interruption after the time the dispute occurs even though it involves checking the official rule guide and/or getting an official interpretation from the Student Supervisor or Assistant Director. b. Dunking (including grasping or hanging on the rim) or attempting to dunk a ball in the basketball goals and hanging on the rim or net DURING DEAD BALL TIME (i.e. Half time, before or after the game, and official stoppages of play) will result in a Technical Foul.

CLOSELY GUARDED: The closely guarded five (5) second count will reward the defense. The defense will be given the ball out-of-bounds for a throw-in.

12. Co-Rec a. TEAM i. A team shall be composed of two (2) men and three (3) women or three (3) men and two (2) women with unlimited substitutions. At no time may a team play with more than a difference of 1 (i.e. a team may not play with one (1) man and three (3) women or vice versa or three (3) of a gender and zero (0) of the other). A team can never have less than four (4) players to start or continue a game. b. SCORING i. A field goal by a female will count as 3 points and by a male will count as 2 points. "Three-point" shots made by a female count as 4 points. Those made by a male count as 3 points. ALL technical fouls result in 2 free throw attempts and possession. If a female is fouled in the act of shooting, she will be awarded the number of free throw attempts equal to her shot attempt. All free throws successfully made by a female will count as 1 point. For example, if a female is fouled behind the 3-point arc, she will be awarded 4 free throws equaling 1 point each. c. SHOT BLOCKING i. There are NO restrictions on blocked shots. d. GAME BALL i. A women’s ball (28.5”) will be used for co-recreational play 13. Sportsmanship Rating System a. Each captain must complete the mandatory captains quiz prior to the season. b. Each team in each contest shall be rated by the officials on their overall behavior during the course of the contest. During the contest, a team’s sportsmanship rating for the contest may be lowered based on in game penalties/fouls. c. Teams will be graded by the game’s officials on an 1-4 scale (see grading criteria below) and will be notified of their grade following each contest. 4 = Team members participate with excellent sportsmanship within the established rules of the contest. 3 = Team or individual team members occasionally complain to officials. Sportsmanship and understanding of the rules is acceptable but could be improved. 2 = A player or team is given a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. 1 = A member of the team is ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike behavior. A team receives two (2) technical fouls.

0 = Multiple members of the team are ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike behavior. A team receives three (3) technical fouls. i. If a participant is ejected, the ejection will be reviewed and the ejected player and team’s manager may be subject to additional penalties. ii. In order for a team to make the playoffs, the team must achieve a cumulative sportsmanship rating of 3.0 or above. 14. Eligibility a. Only current students (enrolled in one (1) or more credit hours) or adult members (18 or older) of the Heskett Center may participate in the Intramural Sports Program. Individuals must present their Shocker Cards to the game officials in order to participate each night. These cards must be validated for the current semester. b. Players must be on team roster before participating. (Team rosters can be found on IMLeagues) c. Players must play in a minimum of one regular season game to participate in the postseason tournament. d. No player may participate on more than one male or female team and one co-rec team in each sport. e. Players are not able to switch teams once they have played in a game for their team f. Females are able to participate in male leagues g. Any player using an assumed name or false ID will be declared ineligible and all games played in will be declared forfeits. The standard forfeit fee will be charged for teams using an assumed name or false ID. h. Intramural sports activities are available for all current WSU students, faculty, and staff. All participants must provide proper identification at the intramural contests. i. Meal slip vouchers or social media platforms are not accepted to participate in intramurals. You must have your WSU ID no exceptions! j. All individuals eligible for intramural sport activities must comply with any rules, regulations, and policies established by the Competitive Sports staff. Eligibility will end upon withdrawal from school, termination of employment, failure to comply with rules and regulations, or failure to uphold expected standards of sportsmanship.
