Tutorial Letter: Assignment preparation and Learner Guide erratum Business Communication (BC) Business Communication 1 (BC101) Semester One 2014 Dear Student Welcome to this module and we wish you lots of success for the upcoming semester. Business Communication is one of the modules which is becoming increasingly important in an age where the digital revolution is turning most of us into less competent writers and speakers:the art of expressing your point appropriately and with some flair and ability is becoming less common and people who are able to do this well are finding that there is a significant demand for their skills in the job market. The quest to use language with some mastery makes you stand out once you have achieved this aim. You will have an interesting time reading ‘The Toa of “incredibly”‘ on the very useful blogspot by Rob Parsons at http://reallyusefulknowledge.blogspot.com. The posts which Rob publishes on this blog contain interesting and relevant musings, advice and suggestions for all students and you will benefit from reading his funny and insightful comments and stories. Assignment The assignment for your module is available on the student portal and you are welcome to start having a look at the questions even though the submission date for assignments is only on 18 March 2014. Here are a few notes to accompany you in this venture: 

Keep in mind that you have to work with a new textbook this semester: Sandra Cleary edited an excellent product which you will enjoy working through and the title is “Communication - A Hands-on Approach” 2nd Edition, 2013. Make sure that you work through and use the guidance document for the completion of the assignment. Go to the website at www.immgsm.ac.za and then to the “Support” button - clicking on that will take you through to “Tutorial Letter” under which you will

find “Module specific tutorial letters”. You will see the guidance letter here taking you through the background information to working on the assignment for Business Communication. Making sure that you are familiar with the guidelines will not only significantly reduce the time you spend on completing this assignment, you will also find that your result will be noticeably better than the marks of those who did not use the guidance. The assignment itself tells you to look at Units 1, 8, 13 AND 15 but with the new textbook becoming available this should tell you to work through Units 1, 4, 5, 6 AND 8.

Erratum A printing error slipped in and you will be perplexed by the fact that the content under ‘3. A brief summary of this module’ on page 4 of the Learner Guide and the content under ‘4. Relationship with other modules’ on page 5 seems to be the same. You are right – this is wrong! The content under ‘4. Relationship with other modules’ should be as follows: “You will need to relate the various cross-cutting themes to each other as you work your way through the module.” May we also remind you that we are available to assist with academic queries. Academic queries should be submitted in writing to: [email protected]. Kind regards IMM GSM Team
