BCC NEWS Looking Back on 2014….. A Message from the Chairman…………….
Now that the cricket has finished for another year it’s perhaps an apt time to reflect upon the 2014 cricket season and everything that we have achieved together as a club. It’s been an incredibly enjoyable and successful year for the club both socially and also cricket wise and within this newsletter some of the highlights will be reflected upon in more detail. When I accepted the role of Chairman I had a host of objectives that I wanted Bollington Cricket Club to achieve over the course of the next few years. Incredibly, with the support of the committee, players, members, families, supporters and sponsors we have met and also exceeded all of these aims within the first year. That’s not to say that we’ll be sitting back and resting on our laurels, we’ll be trying to build on all of our successes in 2014 to achieve even more in the future. What I would like to add to this is that in all of the years that I’ve been involved with Bollington Cricket Club I have never been prouder to have been associated with the club and its members. It has been an absolute pleasure to spend the summer with such a great bunch of people down at the BCG. Enjoy the close season and let’s look forward to an exciting 2015 season back in the Cheshire County Cricket League.

Presidents Day & Cystic Fibrosis Fund Raiser…..

What a day!! I don’t think anybody could have envisaged what a huge success this day would have been when we first discussed hosting this event. There has been so much media coverage both before and after the Presidents Day which can only be of benefit to the club. Congratulations to Dennis Goodwin’s Presidents team claiming victory in the cricket match and to man of the match David Paterson who played one of the innings of the season. Most importantly aside from the cricket, as a club we raised £5,300.00 for our charity partner the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. I’m sure that everybody is aware why this charity is so special to Bollington Cricket Club and we’ll endeavour to try and raise further funds for CFT in the coming seasons.
Team News….. 2014 saw our first team promoted back to the Cheshire County Cricket League at the very first attempt. Many congratulations to Captain Rick Hough and his team for their consistent performances; played 19 won 15 drawn 1 and lost 3. Rick was understandably voted Players’ Player of the year for his personal contribution of 750 league runs at an average of 83 and a top score of 89*. Our 2nd team got off to a flying start under the Captaincy of Pete Henshall and would have been challenging for silverware themselves had they continued in the same form. Finally finishing up with 7 wins and 3 draws out of the 18 completed fixtures gained them eighth place and a lot of fun along the way. The 3rds struggled to find a consistent winning formula but again proved to be an invaluable introduction to senior cricket for many of the junior players and there were some brilliant performances worthy of recognition. An outstanding knock of 91for Dan Carter against Bredbury St Marks earned him the very first award of the Reg Carlisle Trophy. Many of you will know that Reg is a bit of a legend in Bollington CC folklore and he attended the Presidents Day on August 24th. So impressed was he with the set-up he decided to donate this trophy to be awarded to a young person for a single outstanding performance. Well done Dan. A first senior 50 in a match saving situation for Cameron Mackinnon was also in the running for the award. The 3rd team saw first tons for the not quite so young Pete Henshall and Iain Madden. Hattricks are quite rare in any form of the game. Some of us have seen senior players taking a hattrick in a senior game and there have been a couple of junior players taking hattricks in our junior teams. However this year we had a junior player taking a hattrick in a senior game and this was quite rightly awarded the champagne moment of the season. Well done to Harry Mather for his 3 wickets in 3 balls against Woodley. Our U15s came runners up in their league this year but did not get as much cricket as they would have liked once again, largely due to opposition teams conceding matches. The U13s came fourth which was a great result as every player was actually an U12 – this bodes well for a good season in 2015. Our U11s came sixth – again a great result for a team made up of so many under age players. We hope that all the players enjoyed the junior season and we look forward to seeing them all again in January when no doubt many of them will have grown again and will make the current junior chairman feel very short….. The junior season was rounded off with a lads v dads competition. This was open to any of our junior players to play against an adult family representative or friend. In a very close run but eventful match where penalty points had to be awarded against players wearing inappropriate football shirts and for negative bowling the lads just got the winning runs. The day was recorded on camera for posterity and the pictures can be viewed here.
Our joint Junior and Senior presentation evening was held at the Civic Hall on October 11th. Pictures of the event can be viewed here. A list of all the award winners can be downloaded from this page.
Another season highlight - Bollington CC v Cheshire Cobras Sunday May 18th 2014….. Bollington CC were delighted to host a friendly match v the Cheshire Cobras, the Cheshire Visually Impaired team earlier in the season. The weather was perfect and being Bollington Festival a large crowd had gathered to watch the cricket and enjoy the beer and bbq. Although Bollington won on the day it would have much closer had all of our players mastered bowling the specially adapted ball on the actual wicket! Both teams and the spectators enjoyed the game tremendously and those new to VI Cricket were inspired by the event. The Cobras have promised to come back again next year and will definitely give us a run for our money next time especially as they now have some special sim specs to give sighted players an idea of life with a visual impairment! Anyone who wishes to support sport for the visually impaired can do so by joining or donating to the Primary Club. Initially membership was exclusive to cricketers having suffered the indignity of a golden duck but is now open to anyone who loves the game and starts at just £15. Go to http://www.primaryclub.org/ to find out more.
New Kit….. Unfortunately our relationship with kit supplier Kukri was very short lived as they were unable to fulfil the order we placed. A big thank you to Gareth Wheeler at “Get your kit on” who has taken on the order at short notice. The club shop for additional orders will be up and running soon. http://www.getyourkiton.me/
Volunteering….. Thank you to everyone who has helped out at matches and events this season. We have had people baking, barbequing, brewing up, washing up, helping set up for junior matches and clearing up afterwards. All this was much appreciated by the team captains and managers.
Now Looking Forward to 2015… AGM….. Our AGM takes place on Saturday November 8th at 6.30pm in the pavilion. The agenda can be downloaded here. All position are up for grabs so please have a think whether you are able to help out in any way and have a chat with one of the current committee if you can. The future success of the club relies on new volunteers coming forward and not leaving everything to the same people every year. And talking of the future of the club…
Clubmark….. Bollington CC gained Clubmark Accreditation in 2006. Clubmark is awarded by the English Cricket Board when a club is able to demonstrate that it meets the ECB criteria as to playing programme, child protection, sports equity and ethics and club management. Many of the criteria we have to adhere to are demonstrated in the information we give out in membership packs, on the noticeboard and the website. Behind the scenes we also have to complete a Club Development plan with our aims and objectives for the next year, 5 years and 10 years. This is the first year that it is not an online plan so we are starting from scratch on a written CDP. If you would like to view the first draft please click here. If anyone has any questions about the plan or would like to help us formulate and/or achieve our aims and objectives please get in touch with someone on the current committee.
Fundraising….. The Club has a Social & Fundraising Committee which runs a number of fund raising events throughout the year. These are essential for the club’s development and we are very grateful to everyone who supports us in this way. I hope you’ll agree we all have a good time at these functions. If anyone has any great new fundraising ideas for us or would like to get involved with the committee please let Iain Madden know. In addition here are a couple of things you can be doing to help at any time of year, at little or no cost to yourself: Join our 100 Club for just £2 per number per month. Cash prizes to be won.
