BE READY, HERE HE COMES Mark 13:28-37 First Day of Advent
Getting ready for something is not easy sometimes, but we are being reminded this morning. Jesus is coming and you do not want to be found unprepared for that day. The season we begin today - Advent – is calling us to look deeper. It whispers to us, urgently: “Keep awake!” The Signs Are Clear – Jesus uses a fig tree to illustrate the truth for us to understand. There are many - false Messiahs, wars and rumors of wars, persecution of the people of God. The signs are everywhere! We are witnessing killings in churches, schools and mosques, many countries like Iraq, Syria, Libya / Myanmar – are killing their own people. The Time - No one knows when that event will take place. It is foolish to try and set dates concerning the Lord’s return or speculate about it. It Is A Heavenly Time – Only God knows! God wants us to look and live for Him every day. God will not put a commercial on television or radio or drop flyers for this day! Jesus is coming! Are you ready? We Are Challenged To Watch – “to keep awake, to be attentive, to be ready.” It has the idea of a security who dares not fall asleep while on duty. Keep watch for any division, hatred, plans for the church, positions / more. We are also commanded to “pray”. Pray for our church, our giving, community, ministries, for young families and Sunday School. Spend time with God. We Are Challenged To Work – Jesus has assigned each of us a specific task and we are encouraged to work at our tasks diligently, until He comes. Would He find you doing His will or doing as you will? Advent whispers to us: the night is long and difficult, but the dawn is coming. If each one of us is serious about evangelization, we make it our goal, to invite new people, initiate new program - we must move forward! The world still waits for God - Stay ready for the — Opportunity, Victory. Hope. Peace on earth. Be watching and working, for the Master is at the door! “And what I say to you I say to all — keep awake!” (Mark 13:37) The Rev. Dr. George Okusi – Vicar: 12/3/2017, at the 8am and 10:15am services
