ALBERT AND LOGAN NEWS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 2010
BUILDING bridges within Logan’s indigenous community and with the broader community is Amy Blow’s life work. The 21-year-old is Logan PCYC’s new indigenous community sport and recreation officer. Already she has launched several successful programs, the latest being Eagle Dreaming – or Mibunn Bareibunn – which aims to help youths identify with and become more aware of their culture. ‘‘It’s good to learn who you are and where you come from,’’ she said. ‘‘Knowing people who are part of the stolen generations, this not only affects people who were in it but the families who were affected as well.’’
Ms Blow has a Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation which she draws on when organising activities including traditional game sessions and dance. ‘‘I’ve been running a few sessions to get them thinking about the way (games) used to be played, the differences between the traditional (way) and the modern way.’’ She has also been involved in a joint project between the Logan PCYC and Mabel Park State High School which saw the production of a mural. Unveiled last week, it depicts groups of people getting together, working through and making that journey through life. ■ Eagle Dreaming is open to indigenous students between the ages of 13 and 15 years.
