Behaviour Management Policy Outstanding behaviour results in outstanding learning. Every child deserves the right to high quality teaching to enable them to achieve their potential. To achieve this, every class will follow the same rewards and sanctions procedure. PRINCIPLE: Virtually all children behave well, therefore they will be rewarded each day. The minority of children who do not behave well will have sanctions. REWARD PROCESS There are four stages of the daily behaviour reward system and there will be a display in each classroom which outlines this system.
STAGE 1: Every child begins each day in the green zone (new day, new start!). Each child stays in this zone if they do everything that is expected of them. At the end of the day they are awarded one point on the individual “Everyday achievement chart.” Children who have the overwhelming majority (98 %+) of points at the end of the half term will have a class reward e.g. Film Afternoon.
STAGE 2 If they have done something really good they will be rewarded with a note home. The staff member will sign the note and pass it to the child. There will be a separate chart for the child to indicate that they have been awarded this prize. They will get one point on this “Going for Gold Chart.”
STAGE 3 If they have done something exceptional they can be sent a postcard home. Two points will be awarded on the “Going for Gold” chart.
STAGE 4 At the end of each week each class will nominate a Head Teacher Award Winner. Each winner will be awarded two points will be awarded on the “Going for Gold” chart. This recognises something exceptional.
The Going for Gold chart will last termly. When the children are awarded ten points they will receive a bronze award given to them by their teacher. Twenty points they will be awarded a silver award given to them in assembly. Thirty points they will receive a gold award. At the end of the term all the achievement points will be added by the class teachers, and a new chart will start at the beginning of each term.
GOLDEN TIME it is a “reward time” each week from 2.15pm-2.35pm for any child with five individual achievement points (they have been in the green zone for five days). A child who has lost one or two points will have time out in their classroom when golden time is taking place. A child who has lost three or more over two weeks will be sent to a central place.
CONSEQUENCES There a minority of children who display behaviour that is inappropriate (disrupting lessons, wasting time, spoiling other children’s playtime and lack of respect). The following is to act as a deterrent.
STAGE 1 Amber zone : A child will be moved into the amber zone on the class chart, this is a warning for the child. The children placed in this zone at the end of the day will not gain an achievement point. Once a child has moved into this zone they can move out, if their behaviour improves.
In the first instance if children if children are misbehaving at a low level in the classroom then it is the class teacher’s responsibility to deal with it by firstly verbally warning the child, at this point the child should be encouraged to make a behaviour choice, this can allow them to return to GREEN or escalate to RED.
Second warning the child will have timeout in their classroom. The class teacher will supervise this for a short amount of time. If this does not improve their behaviour or if this behaviour happens repeatedly the child then moves to RED. Choice presented to child, “You can choose to ……..or you can choose too ………”
STAGE 2 RED ZONE: A child will be moved into the RED for continued inappropriate behaviour. If they are moved into the RED zone the children has to be seen by a member of the phase leadership team and to be spend the rest of the session (either morning or afternoon ) in their classroom. In KS1 the child will be sent to Mrs Cockburn, KS2 Charlotte Dunn and Carrie Higgins upper KS2. The class teacher will provide work. At the end of the session the child will acknowledge the inappropriate behaviour and apologise to the member of staff. The senior member of staff will keep a brief record of who has been sent and the reason.
STAGE 3 RED ZONE: Second occasion over a short period of time the child will enter the RED zone, the child will be sent with work to Mr Rogers (KS2) or Mrs Dow (KS1). Mr Rogers and Mrs Dow will appoint a behaviour mentor for the children (upper KS2: Mrs Soulsby; lower KS2 Mrs Johnson and in KS1 Mrs Kish). The behaviour mentors will formally touch base with the class teachers/children on daily basis and the Senior Staff on a Weekly basis. At this time the class teacher and behaviour mentor will inform the parents and ask parents to help improve their child’s behaviour.
STAGE 4 The next time that a child is placed in the RED zone the child will be sent to the deputy head for a lunchtime detention. At this point a meeting is called with the parents and the child is placed upon report. The behaviour mentor, deputy head and class teacher will be present and inform the child that behaviour is expected to improve over a two week period.
It might be deemed appropriate that they are sent to detention on a daily basis or the indoor games room to keep their behaviour consistently good.
The child’s parents will have a follow up meeting (two weeks later) and further action/targets agreed.
STAGE 5 POSSIBLE FURTHER ACTION
Internal exclusion in another classroom (KS1: Karen Dow, Lower KS2: Charlotte Dunn, Upper Key Stage 2: Adam Rogers)
Internal exclusion a day away from their class child to be dropped off at the front door (looked after by Deputy Head then Head teacher).
A KS2 child to be educated at St Aloysius but on the different site i.e. Red zone child spending half day/ day in the Infant school. A member of the staff will accompany them.
Following this the child will be educated at a different school with a member of St Aloysius staff.
STAGE 6
Extreme behaviour or persistent disruptive and challenging behaviour may lead to pupil exclusion. At this point the parents, school and local authority will be involved to ensure L.A procedures are followed
PLEASE NOTE:
FIXED TERM EXCLUSION
The child can move to any stage at the discretion of the Head teacher/Senior Leadership Team. In virtually all cases it will be expected to go through the hierarchy.
Sept, 2014
In the Early Years a simpler system is in operation.
Each child is placed on a daily basis in the sunshine zone (this means good work, play, attitudes)
If they behave inappropriately they move to the “Rain Cloud” as a warning.
For significant inappropriate behaviour then the child will move to the “Storm Cloud”.
On the second occasion this happens the child will be appointed a behaviour mentor (Lynne Scurr). It is her role to touch base with the children throughout the day. At this point the class teacher informs the parents.
On the third time it happens the child will have time out. Supervised by the behaviour mentor. At this point the class teacher and behaviour mentor meets with the parent. The child could be placed upon report.
If the behaviour continues the child will be sent to the classroom of Mrs Cockburn.
If this repeated the Deputy head is involved and a discussion with involvement will be agreed.
