Cyclists ride for their share of the road

Tor onto location

BY MATT HO Bike enthusiasts frustrated with a lack of bike lanes on Bloor Street had a chance to make their voices heard at the third annual Bells on Bloor on May 31. The event had a great turnout, with police officers escorting cyclists and crowds chanting “bike lanes on Bloor” as they rode. People who didn’t have bikes could still participate, and there were cyclists, kids on tricycles, and the odd person walking alongside the

energetic crowd. Some cyclists even had boom boxes on their bikes. Despite all the noise and excitement, it was a peaceful demonstration. After organizers Hamish Wilson, Albert Koehl, Angela Bishoff, and others gathered in Future Bistro (483 Bloor St. W.) in the fall of ’06, they decided to start the event to honour a friend who passed away. They felt that bike safety on the road had been ignored long enough. “Things weren’t happening fast enough. [It’s] a great way to promote bike lanes along Bloor,” said Wilson.

“It’s something that would be very cheap to do, relatively speaking. Just painting lines on the street isn’t very expensive.” “Initially people thought we were crazy taking on such an ambitious goal,” said Bishoff. Since 2007, cyclists have gathered each summer to bike from High Park to Queen’s Park. Along the way, they ring the bells on their bikes and make themselves heard, as they advocate their right to have a share of
