Benedictine was picked to finish third in the preseason Midwest Lacrosse Conference poll. Benedictine has posted double-digit wins in three consecutive seasons and has made the conference tournament each of the past two years. The Eagles finished 4-2 in conference play last year and racked up 49 points. The conference features nine teams this season. Aurora, four-time defending champion, earned the title of preseason favorite followed by Concordia Wisconsin.

Elmhurst finished last season with a record of 6-11 and has been predicted to finish third in the CCIW preseason poll. The Bluejays, who received a first place vote, made the conference tournament last year. Goalie Nick Bonastia returns after playing every minute of the 2016 season. Mac Harden led the team with 34 goals last season, adding 13 assists.

Benedictine owns a 3-1 record all-time against Elmhurst. The lone Elmhurst victory came in 2015. Benedictine scored a 13-11 win last year in the first game under head coach Guy Bourdon. Elmhurst led twice in the game at 3-2 and 7-6. Both teams scored four times in the second half. Corbin Gett and Matthew Johnson each scored four times for Benedictine while Jeremy Voyda stopped 13 shots in goal.
