Make it... Don’t Break it How to prepare for before and after Thanksgiving Break

With the holiday season quickly approaching, so is the race to final papers, exams and class projects. The following are tips to best prepare academically for the upcoming thanksgiving break, and how you can maximize that time at home for family, food and relaxation. 1. Complete as many assignments due the Monday or Tuesday following Turkey day before going home. No one wants to take a pile of books home and nine times out of ten those books remain closed and cause a mad rush Sunday night to complete them. Have a paper due on the 28th? Get it started now and set a goal to finish it during break. Have an exam the Friday before dead week? Start making flashcards and retyping notes before leaving so you have a head start on studying! 2. This should be obvious but, complete all assignments due prior to break ON TIME. You do not want to be cramming in extra work over the holiday because you did not manage your time in the first place. Utilize the October newsletter’s article “Time Management 101” to get some tips that are never to late to start! 3. Know what the 3 weeks following break look like. The holiday does not just make you laxidasical on the day you eat turkey! Some students fall into full on vacation mode and never bounce back upon returning to campus. This feeling can make or break the whole semester so do not let yourself fall prey to this mentality! Make a list or calendar of all the assignments, papers, and tests you have upon return to campus, including finals and their dates and times. Include on that list or calendar a plan of attack for dead week. Having this plan in place before leaving for Thanksgiving can set your mind at ease and keep you from stressing over how you are going to get everything done. 4. Decide on materials for only one or two classes to bring home. The hardest thing about breaks is finding the time to get everything done. It is inevitable that you will need to do SOME work over the holiday week, however do not be unrealistic and bring 5 books home and expect to get it all done. Again look at what your have upcoming and make a decision about what you can honestly foresee yourself completing over break. Even if it is only a chapter of your Biology text that is better than doing nothing at all!

Community Commitment

Contributed by: Alishia Cairl: SAAC President October was a very exciting month for SAAC and all the student-athletes. We kicked off the month with a conference wide community service event. As a conference the Big Sky decided to work with local youth programs and ISU was fortunate to have the chance to team up with Brooklyn’s Playground. There was a great turn out at this event. We had participation from almost all the Bengal student-athletes and were able to accomplish a lot of work on the site. The event was an excellent way to get our student-athletes out in the community, and allowed us to support a great cause that helps make a playground accommodating to every child. The idea of doing a conference wide community service event is new, but the Big Sky SAAC, as well as ISU’s SAAC is looking forward to future opportunities and all the different people we can touch.

Last week ISU SAAC also held our annual Trunk or Treat. This event is a family and studentathlete favorite here in Pocatello. We had great participation from all the teams, with many of the athletes dressing up in their own costumes. The event only took about an hour; lots of little princesses and cowboys came and snatched up all the candy. It was great to see the community out there interacting with the different teams even in the cold weather. After such a great fall we are looking forward to the rest of the year. Right now SAAC is working on starting our canned food drive that will last the rest of the school year, and gearing up for a great winter and spring!
