Connect

Connect Why British values?  Schools are required to teach and promote British Values.  These values are seen as core principles or ideals that promote the best of being British.  More importantly, these core principles promote a sense of equality and fairness in society. We stand by these as a C of E school. 

For each of the following values your tutor might invite you to give examples of where we promote this value in school!

Connect British value 1: Democracy  We believe that democracy should be promoted.  Each of us has a right to a fair vote.  We can influence decision-making through democratic processes.

Connect British value 2: Rule of law  We believe in the importance of our laws.  We need to understand that rules exist in our communities to protect the common good.  We believe these laws should be promoted in our classrooms, corridors and communities.

Connect British value 3: Separation of power  We believe that we should promote the ways in which there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary.  There are different British institutions / powers. Each arm of government has its own powers (i.e. law courts, parliament, the Police, the Defence Forces etc.)

Connect British value 4: Individual liberty / freedom 

   

We have a legal right to hold our own beliefs and it is important that we value this right. We have the freedom to choose what to believe. Many across the world do not have this. As a C of E school we value this freedom. We have the freedom to challenges others beliefs respectfully and to argue for change where other’s belief contravene or threaten British values.

Connect British value 5: Tolerance and respect  We believe that we should promote tolerance and respect of other beliefs and traditions.  We should not discriminate against others based on their beliefs, cultures or religious ideas.  Our work alongside Stonewall is one example of this in action.

Connect British value 6: Identify & combat discrimination  We believe that we should promote the importance of identifying and combating discrimination of all kinds.  We strive to eradicate discrimination.  We must also help students and staff identify it.

Connect End of term tutor challenge

We want to promote British values because they form part of our ethos. We need your creative talents to remind staff and students of how important these values are.

 

Your challenge is to produce a poster that promotes one or more of the British values that you have just explored! The winning posters will be judged by Mr Gibson (our new Head) and they will be printed professionally for display in the school!  You can work in pairs / small groups if you wish.  A PRIZE will be given for each of the posters chosen!

Connect Stuck for ideas?    

  

What about a symbol promoting all of the values together? Scenes showing students / staff acting on the values? Examples of where / how we show these values at NCEA? Quotes from students / staff about the importance of these values at NCEA? Your own vision for a perfect society based on these values? The values re-written in student / child friendly speak? Think outside the box!!
