he Community Development Department consists of three major divisions – Planning, Development Services and Transportation Planning & Traffic Engineering. he City of Beverly Hills is a 5.7 square mile municipality adjacent to the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood. The residential population is approximately 35,350 and the daytime population is over 200,000. everly Hills is a General Law city governed by a five-member City Council. Every odd-numbered year either two or three members are elected atlarge to serve four-year terms. Each March the Council meets and chooses one of its members as Mayor and one as Vice-Mayor. The Mayor serves the presiding officer of the Council. Beverly Hills provides a full range of municipal services with a current General Fund budget of almost $184 million and an all funds budget of nearly $417 million. The City consists of nine departments plus City Clerk and City Attorney’s offices. T

he Assistant Director/City Planner fulfills an important role within the City’s executive management team, and is an essential leader in the Community Development Department – serving as the Director in her/his absence. The Assistant Director will have a management role in overseeing the City’s land use and development programs, and will also be instrumental as the City seeks to innovate and implement new policy approaches. This seasoned professional will direct the work of professional, technical and support staff members and will also be focused on their professional growth. The Assistant Director will guide updates to the General Plan, municipal code and other programs and policies. He/she will respond to technical inquiries of decision makers and will work closely with the management team in the Community Development Department.

The Assistant Director will manage all staff work related to the Planning Commission, Cultural Heritage Commission, Architectural Commission, and the Design Review Commission. As a visible professional representative of the City, the ideal candidate will be a confident and credible communicator who can easily engage stakeholders in meaningful discussion. Demonstrated success in communicating effectively in front of a variety of audiences is necessary to be successful in the role. He/ she must also possess the ability to exercise ultimate diplomacy even under the most trying circumstances. In addition, it will be important for the new Assistant Director to be a great listener and skilled facilitator capable of managing diverse opinions and ideas. The ideal candidate must convey an advanced understanding of customer service excellence. The ability to be empathetic and understand the customer’s perspective is essential for maximum effectiveness. Previous experience interacting with elected and appointed officials coupled with well-developed political acumen will also be important factors in the assessment of candidates. Qualified candidates will be well-versed in all aspects of planning, including extensive knowledge of CEQA. Knowledge of contemporary planning trends and best practices is required to succeed in Beverly Hills. Previous experience serving affluent, well-educated and sophisticated constituents will help to ensure a smooth transition. A minimum of seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience that includes at least two (2) years of supervisory/management responsibilities in a local government setting along with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or related discipline are required. A Master’s degree is preferred. Possession of valid California Driver’s License and AICP certification are required, though the hiring authority will waive the AICP requirement if a candidate makes a commitment to obtain the certification within two years of hiring.

he Assistant Director/City Planner position is within the City’s executive classification. The annual salary range for the position is $121,488 to 164,364. The City provides an excellent executive benefit package, which includes but is not limited to:
