Matt Nadelhoffer was named Big Blue Head Basketball Coach in April 2011. Since his arrival, Nadelhoffer set his focus on changing the program’s culture and overall talent. In 2012-13, with 15 new freshmen (including five freshman starters) Nadelhoffer led Millikin out of the basement to an 8-17 (4-10) record. For the first time in three years they won a CCIW game. They finished sixth in the conference for first time since 2009. Nadelhoffer started up a student section which helped the Big Blue to a 5-5 (.500) home record and doubled attendance at home basketball games. Nadelhoffer continues to build the Big Blue program to be competitive in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, recognized as the top conference in Division III basketball. Nadelhoffer came to Millikin from Eastern University where he had served as Head Coach since 2002. Under Nadelhoffer’s direction the Eagles had the school’s highest Freedom Conference finish in school history finishing in second in 2009-10. Prior to going to Eastern University, Nadelhoffer was an assistant at the College of Dupage and was on their staff when they won the NJCCA National Championship in 2002. Nadelhoffer is a 1998 graduate of Wheaton College where he earned All-America and All-CCIW honors as a player. He set an NCAA record for assists in a tournament game with 20 and holds the Wheaton record for assists in a season at 221. Nadelhoffer was in inducted into the Wheaton Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. After college, he played in the CBA and had a tryout stint with the Miami Heat. Nadelhoffer has played in Croatia, Portugal, England, Spain, Ireland, and Switzerland.

Kramer Soderberg

Kramer Soderberg joined the Millikin staff as the Big Blue’s top assistant in October 2015. Soderberg spent three years as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Lindenwood University. During his playing days, Soderberg was one of the best guards to play at Lindenwood University. In his two seasons at Lindenwood he averaged 17 points a game and started in all 66 games he played in. He was named the first-team All-HAAC in 2010-11, the HAAC Newcomer of the Year, and was a member of the NAIA All-American Third-Team. After his senior season, he was named a Capital One Division II Academic All-American. Soderberg scored 1,148 points ending his career, seventh, on the all-time leading scorers list. Soderberg attended St. Charles West High School and was a three-time all-state selection, earned conference player of the year honors three times and all-conference accolades four times. He was tabbed the 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri and also was named the St. Louis Post Dispatch 2008 Player of the Year. Soderberg graduated from Lindenwood with his bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned his master’s in mass communication in 2014.

Blake Woodard Blake Woodard is in his

third year at Millikin University as an Assistant Coach. Prior to coming to Millikin, Woodard was an Assistant Coach for Rodney Watson at Division II University of Southern Indiana from 2010-2014. The Screaming Eagles won the 2012 and 2014 GLVC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament all four years during that time period. USI was 94-29 (.764) during Woodard’s four years at the Evansville school while producing nine allconference picks and four All-Americans. Woodard received bachelor’s degrees in Business Management and Business Administration and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Indiana in 2014. Woodard is the Assistant Director of Millikin’s Office of Student Success.

He also served as a student manager/coach for three years on the football team. Nathan is the son of Bryan Marshall ’85, Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Information. His mother Shannon Marshall ‘05 and sister Taylor Black ’13 are graduates of Millikin. Nathan has been around Millikin his entire life and served the program as a coach for the summer camps for the last four years. Nathan is an Athletic Training major.

Griswold Center Griswold Physical Education Center has been the home of Millikin University basketball since the 1970-71 season. The Big Blue men christened the new facility with a 108-77 victory over Grinnell on Dec. 1, 1970. The men also won the basketball program’s 1,000th game at Griswold Center, a 67-54 victory over North Central on Jan. 11, 1995. Three regulation-size basketball courts are located in the fieldhouse portion of the building, which is 114 by 192 feet. The original Tartan surface was replaced by a maple floor in 1989. Seating for 3,052 spectators is available in Griswold Center. In the summer of 2004, new bleachers were installed on the building’s west side. In addition to traditional bleacher seating, fold-down style chairs are also part of the new bleacher design. And during the summer of 2005, new scoreboards were added thanks to a gift from Dyke (‘68) and Sue Hawk (‘69) Ridgley. Prior to the 201314 season, the east side bleachers were refurbished to provide for additional seating. Griswold Center also houses a six-lane swimming pool, classrooms, offices, locker rooms and a training room. The building is named to recognize the gift of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Griswold. Mr. Griswold was a member of the class of 1923 and a former University trustee.

After graduating four starters off last year’s team, the 2016-17 Millikin men’s basketball team will be young and inexperienced. Despite its youth, Big Blue Head Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Nadelhoffer believes Millikin has a talent to be competitive in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). The task won’t be easy for the Big Blue as the CCIW expands to nine teams this year and was recently ranked by D3hoops.com as the best basketball conference in NCAA Division III. Millikin returns eight letter winners, but sophomore point guard Jack Simpson is the only starter returning to the Big Blue lineup. Nadelhoffer has added a strong group of talented freshmen and transfers to the program. The newcomers bring improved athleticism and some much needed size to the team. “We are very young and very inexperienced-we will be a work in progress,” said Nadelhoffer. “I am very excited about our future down the road as we have great building blocks.” Simpson averaged six points and three rebounds in 22 starts last season. Simpson’s experience at point guard will be a major plus for the Big Blue. Sophomore Tyler Pygon and junior Mike Charles should also see action at the two guard positions. Pygon showed scoring potential last year before having his season cut short due to injury. Two players that were major scorers on the high school level will be looked to offensively on the perimeter for the Big Blue. Sophomore Nathan Lovekamp and freshman Zach Fisher both have the ability to take over a game on the offensive end of the floor. Junior Leighton Lark, transfer junior Levi Bailey and freshman Logan Bader will all be looked to for contributions at forward. Lark saw action in 22 games for the Big Blue last season and could have a breakout year in 2016-17. Junior transfer 6-6 Levi Bailey will be a major weapon for the Big Blue. Bailey is a deadly three point shooter and can create points in the paint. At 6-5, Bader provides Millikin with additional support on the front line. Millikin will have some additional size in the middle this season. At 6-6 and 300 pounds freshman Jordan Cunningham has the size and talent to be a dominant force in the paint. Freshman Korbin Farmer at 6-7 and senior Matt Kruse at 6-9 provide Nadelhoffer with much needed depth in the post. Millikin will open the season on the road at Aurora University on November 15. Millikin will then play three games in five days to open the home portion of the schedule. One major change to the schedule is the timing of CCIW action. In the past, conference games didn’t begin until January. This season Millikin will play two CCIW games in December including the conference opener on December 3 at Carthage College.

CCIW History

Big Blue on CCIW First-Team

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enters 2016-17 as its 71st season of competition, 31st for women’s sports. During the 2015-16 academic year, the CCIW honored over 1,600 academic all-conference recipients, 14 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 36 CoSIDA Academic All-District recipients and over 100 athletic all-Americans. CCIW schools have accounted for 48 national championships in NCAA Division III competition, including 16 in men’s cross country, six in men’s basketball, six in men’s outdoor track and field, four in football and men’s indoor track and field, three in women’s soccer, three in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s basketball and men’s soccer and one apiece in baseball and women’s indoor track and field. The conference was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946, in Jacksonville, Ill., and opened competition in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. In 1967, the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, to recognize Carthage, which moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1962 and Carroll, which entered the conference in 1955. The CCIW sponsors 23 sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.
