BIOTECHNOLOGY
Biotechnology “Made in Baden-Württemberg” – a global player at the heart of Europe Baden-Württemberg’s location in the centre of Europe offers a significant advantage in that it guarantees access to many important markets. Biotech companies in Baden-Württemberg develop and produce high-quality technological products, making them leading players in Germany and Europe. Their biotech products enjoy high national and international demand and are used throughout the world.
Biotechnology in Germany
•
As biotechnology is a classic interface technology which has input not only from biology and biochemistry but also from physics, chemistry, process technology, material science and IT, the German biotech sector with its technologically advanced status in many of these individual disciplines, is at the forefront of all the German high-tech industries.
•
The biotech sector is made up of around 500 businesses in Germany with more than 15,000 employees who generate a turnover of over 2 billion Euros. If we include the ever increasing number of businesses which count biotechnology as part of their business, the following picture of the sector emerges: 600 businesses with around 30,000 employees generating a total turnover of more than 3 billion Euros.
•
In the field of biotechnology, Germany has become a driving force within Europe, with innovative, lucrative and marketable ideas.
•
Worldwide, German businesses hold the no. 2 position behind the USA in terms of annual patent applications in the field of biotechnology.
•
Germany„s strength within the fields of “red”, “green” and “white” biotechnology lies in particular in the “red” area, i.e. medical biotechnology. In this sector Germany holds the no. 1 position in Europe, and no. 2 in the world. Almost half
–
around 44% – of German biotech companies are specialists in the development of new medicines or diagnostic tests.

Five strong bio-regions have developed in Baden-Württemberg, more than in any other German state: the bio-region RhineReutlingen

Ulm
the bio-region Freiburg, the bio-region Ulm and BioLAGO in Constance. These bio-regions within Baden-Württemberg are focussed on particularly forward-looking application fields within the area of biotechnology, and support the successful use of Freiburg
biotechnology in the south-west.

One particular advantage of the bio-regions is that to a significant extent private capital can be raised in them to enable biotech companies to expand. This capital-raising effect can be seen, for

example, in the bio-region Rhine-Neckar-triangle where it stands at over one thousand percent.

Parasites in the genome Scientists as the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen have deciphered the structure of a protein (L1ORF1p) which is coded by a parasitic genetic element and is essential for its mobility. This makes new knowledge about the relationships between retrotransposons and retroviruses possible, and probably also about evolutionary processes in humans and animals. One further success of this discovery could be that via the mechanism of the LINE-1 retrotransposon, genetic information could be smuggled into a person„s genetic make-up in a targeted way in future. This would be an alternative to less specifically targeted methods based on a retroviral mechanism. Peptide Chips for better cancer diagnosis Synthetically manufactured short protein pieces, known as peptides, are an important tool for researchers and doctors. However, they are expensive and time-consuming to manufacture. Scientists in the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) have succeeded in building peptides on a microchip. This new technique is extremely effective, as well as quicker and therefore cheaper than previous methods. This innovative technology has already received a science prize from the Foundation for German Science and will be series-manufactured by PEPperPRINT GmbH, a company set up by scientists from the DKFZ. The German Cancer Research Centre is the largest biomedical research facility in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Over 2,000 employees, including 850 scientists, research the mechanisms by which cancer arises, and work on understanding cancer risk factors. They provide the basis for the development of new approaches in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer diseases.
