Competing Against Professionals

Practice/Tryout For Pro Team

You may participate with an amateur team, or on your own, in competition against professional athletes and teams, but you are ineligible to play for UAB if you have competed on a professional team in your sport. However, your eligibility will not be effected if you compete in golf, tennis, or two-person sand volleyball, with a partner who is receiving cash or comparable prize, as long as you, yourself, do not receive any payment of any kind.

Under NCAA rules, you are allowed to practice with, or tryout for a pro team (or participate in a combine involving a pro team), without losing eligibility. You are also allowed to receive only actual and necessary expenses for one 48-hour period per pro team practice/tryout. The permitted 48 hours start counting once you have reached the practice/ tryout location. When you have completed your practice/tryout with that team, you must leave the practice location immediately to receive expenses from that team. If the practice/tryout lasts longer than 48 hours, you must pay for your own expenses (i.e., travel, lodging, food). A self-financed practice/tryout can last for any length of time. You cannot miss class for either a self-financed or an expense-paid 48-hour practice/tryout. In addition, you are prohibited from: (1) receiving any compensation for the practice sessions; (2) entering into a contract with the pro team or sports organization; and (3) taking part in any outside competition as member or representative of that team.

Pro Draft and Inquiries You may, at any time, inquire about your eligi-  bility for a professional draft or request information about your own market value without affecting your status as an amateur. However, as a general rule, when you ask to be placed on a draft list—or supplemental draft list—you will lose your amateur status, even if you withdraw your name, do not get drafted, or do not sign a contract with a professional team.  There are several exceptions to this rule, and here are some: 
