Mary was a young peasant girl from Nazareth. When she came of age and experienced her first menstruation, her family arranged for her marriage to a local boy, a woodworker named Joseph. Their families celebrated the betrothal and began making plans for the wedding. Soon after the betrothal, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, saying “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” Luke 1:30-31. The New Oxford Annotated Bible Revised Standard Version. The appearance of the angel frightened Mary, but she accepted her fate, saying “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38. Mary’s pregnancy dishonored her family. Joseph knew the baby was not his, and his family had the right to kill Mary for disgracing their son. Possibly, for this reason, Mary’s family shipped her off to her cousin, Elizabeth’s home. Elizabeth was also pregnant (with the future John the Baptist). Although Joseph knew he was not the baby’s father, he married Mary. When Mary was advanced in her pregnancy, Joseph took her with him as he travelled to Bethlehem to register for the census. Mary gave birth in a stable, and Joseph named the baby Jesus. Mary is one of the few women in the Bible that is documented as a young girl, a young mother and a mature woman. We know very little about Mary because the writers of the Gospels focused on the real story, the life and ministry of Jesus. Joseph and Mary lived a simple life, allowing their son to spend time in the Temple as he prepared for his ministry. Mary watched as Jesus travelled the countryside, teaching and performing miracles. She could see that Jesus’s actions were not well received by the Romans, and could do nothing as she saw danger coming. When Jesus was arrested, Mary saw her son tortured and crucified. Jesus was both a gift and a trial to Mary. Imagine experiencing the highs of raising the Son of God, and the lows of seeing Him tortured and killed. Throughout Jesus’s life and ministry, Mary was the model mother, always loving, accepting, supporting Toll free 877-239-3655 www.stitchintree.com Please contact us if you find an error in this pattern or and following her son without question.
