Providing Real-Life Financial Training: Bloomberg Professional Services trading room May 2014 It has become more critical than ever for students to have genuine hands-on experience during their studies in order to be completive in the job market. Obtaining such experience can be particularly difficult within financial modules. Therefore, the School of Economics, Finance & Management (EFM) would like to provide students from across all academic disciplines the opportunity to utilise Bloomberg Professional Services (BPS) at the University of Bristol. Bloomberg Professional Services at the University of Bristol Bloomberg is one of the leading suppliers of financial and related information to the worldwide financial sector. Virtually every financial organisation in the UK subscribes to BPS and it is on the desk of every financial professional in the City. Bloomberg operates in more than 70 countries, providing a vast range of market, financial, economic and media data on a single platform. BPS will provide Bristol students an unparalleled breadth and depth of information from a single source. Users will have access to over 5,000 news stories each day to teach them how to follow and interpret the marketing-moving events that professional traders and money managers rely on to stay informed and make critical financial decisions. With more than 15,000 indices and over a 100 metrics from 45,000 companies, students can compare different investment strategies and analyse specific companies and industries. The University BPS will be almost the same as that provided to financial professionals, including extensive training and analytical features. The biggest difference is that market data will have a time delay of 15 minutes, and it is not configured to allow actual purchases of financial instruments. However, the University BPS will include a virtual trading room that is almost identical to an actual trading room, thus moving students from the hypothetical to the real world. 12 Bloomberg terminals will be placed in a bespoke room, possibly in the Social Sciences complex or in the Arts and Social Sciences Library. Bloomberg will provide posters, transfers for glass and other items to clearly delineate the Bloomberg Trading Room. The resource will be widely advertised, particularly to relevant student societies and by the Careers Office, to students who are interested in careers in the City. Initially the trading room will be used for private study and research by EFM students, students from other disciplines and staff. However, some staff can see exciting ways to incorporate University BPS in units to enrich students’ experience, but direct use of the trading room into modules may take some time to build up.

Benefits to the University’s Student Body The simulated trading room will provide students the hands-on experience needed for successful careers. By opening BPS to all students, the University can ensure that it procures, nurtures and produces the next generation of financial experts from a variety of academic backgrounds. BPS includes an online training course and exam (BESS) that many recruiters in the finance sector rate highly. The Careers Office is keen to market this valuable qualification as it will enhance prospects for all students interesting in pursuing a career in the finance sector. Students at other institutions have commented that having access to the same information platform used by leading decision makers in business, finance and government has increased their confidence and given them an edge in securing jobs in the financial sector. The University is dedicated to ensuring its students have the best resources to start their careers. As a member of the Russell Group, it is critical the University offers students resources such as the trading room that give “added value” to their academic experience. Bloomberg is a world-class company known across the globe and creating a Bristol BPS will enhance Bristol’s global reputation of providing students with all the resources need to succeed. How you can help
We urgently seek £144,000 to fund 12 BPS terminals for three years. Bloomberg offers universities a special discount when purchasing three or more terminals. We will only need to pay for three terminals to receive a total of 12.
We need £40,000 to fund the bespoke room, which includes PCs with dual monitors, furniture and card-swipe room access. This one-off expense will ensure a secure environment where students have access to the terminals.
