NOTES WEEK 4 • 9/20 • AT KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN The Matchup Bluefield and Kentucky Christian face one another for the third-straight season, with KCU holding the 2-0 series lead. Last season, KCU grabbed a quick 21-0 lead at Mitchell Stadium and never looked back en route to a 38-7 win over the Rams. Both teams are coming off road victories, as Bluefield knocked off The Apprentice School and the Knights defeated Reinhardt. Scouting the Knights Kentucky Christian looks to be a much improved squad, especially offensively, compared to last season. In 2013, the Knights averaged 13.5 points per game. After a season-opening 7 points at Tennessee Tech, KCU has posted 30 and 31 points in back-toback wins. On the defensive side, KCU currently ranks 15th in the country in total defense per game (287 yards) and 21st in scoring defense per game (21.0). Quarterback Graham Johnston leads the team in rushing, averaging 99.3 yards per game while passing for 90.7 yards per game with a 36.8 completion percentage. Andrew Steward leads the defense with an average of 13.7 tackles per game. MSC East Bluefield’s match with KCU returns the Rams to MSC East Division play. Many teams begin conference divisional play this week.
Options The Rams showed they have multiple offensive options in their win over The Apprentice School. Five different running backs had more than five carries, while nine different receivers caught a pass. Bluefield recorded 503 yards of total offense on 76 plays. Big Day for Buford RJ Buford had a big game against the Builders, recording three sacks, a quarterback hurry late in the game and a safety as well. The junior’s three sacks were for a loss of more than 20 yards. Third Downs Bluefield is 15-of-39 (37.5%) on third-downs this season, while KCU ranks 7th in the NAIA in opponent’s third down conversion at 20.5%. Dixon Continues to Progress Quarterback Ashten Dixon continues to improve as he gains more experience and works under the guidance of Head Football Coach Ordell Walker. Against the Builders last week, Dixon completed 12-of-16 passes for 201 yards--his first 200-yard game and just the Rams’ third since the program returned. Dixon also rushed for 41 yards. He threw for one touchdown and ran in another. 80 The Rams’ win last week was the program’s 80th, and first since returning the program.

BLUEFIELD COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON NOTES (CONT.) WEEK 3 • 9/13 • AT APPRENTICE SCHOOL Seeking Win #1 The Rams achieved their first victory since the program was revived and returned to varsity status in 2012 with a 46-24 win over The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. Bluefield College Football’s last collegiate victory had came on November 20, 1941 -- a 30-7 win over University of Rio Grande. Following the 1941 season, the program was disbanded as many of the college’s men went on to serve our country in WWII. Bluefield College was a two-year school during the entirety of its early history (192241), and became a four-year institution for the 1973-74 academic year. Kick it The Rams gained a boost in the kicking game against Presbyterian College as James Gunn (K) made his collegiate debut and Daniel Griffin (P) returned to the lineup. Gunn provided a touchback on his first collegiate kickoff and was 2-for-2 in PATs, while Griffin averaged 44.2 yards per punt with a long of 54. Airing it Out When the Rams’ run game was halted by a strong defensive line at PC, BC went to the air with Ashten Dixon tossing for a career-high 192 yards (12-for-19). David Gianesin was the primary target, catching six passes for a career-best 126 yards. Freshman Quincey Mock (Hampton, Va.) had back-to-back catches on one series, totaling 47 yards. WEEK 2 • 9/6 • AT PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE NAIA vs. NCAA FCS (1-7) Prior to BC’s kickoff vs. PC, eight contests had involved NAIA vs. NCAA FCS matchups. Grand View (IA) was the only NAIA program to log a win, a 45-22 victory over Drake University. Grand View is the defending NAIA National Champion, having defeated University of the Cumberlands last year, while Drake competes in the Pioneer League, which does not offer scholarships. Making Progress The Rams posted their highest point total since the program’s return in the 6240 loss against Pikeville. Ashten Dixon went 10-for-17 with two touchdowns to lead the QB attack, while Marion Harris provided 79 rushing yards to lead a group of four rushers who totaled more than 50 yards apiece.
COORDINATORS LAMAR BELL DEFENSIVE COORD. 1st SEASON HIGH POINT UNIV. Lamar Bell joined the Bluefield College football coaching staff in December after the 2013 season. He immediately assisted the program with recruiting, then worked with directly with players through spring practice.
In 2012, Bell served as a graduate assistant under Walker at Greenville College. He served in multiple roles with the Panthers once again in 2013, including recruiting and academic coordinator in addition to serving as a defensive backs coach. Bell is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and earned his degree in sport management at High Point University.
Bell was originally planned to be the codefensive coordinator with head coach Ordell Walker, but has earned sole possession of defensive coordinator duties for 2014. He also works as a position coach for cornerbacks.
AARON MINGO OFFENSIVE COORD. 2nd SEASON GREENVILLE COLLEGE Aaron Mingo joined BC football during the summer of 2013 as the Rams’ new offensive coordinator. In his first season as the BC play caller, Mingo helped the Rams increase their offensive production by more than 80 yards per game and score six more touchdowns compared to the team’s first year back on the gridiron. The team’s rushing output nearly doubled -going from 1004 yards to 1917 yards -- serving as a vital part of the team’s point production. Marion Harris provided the program’s first 100- and 200-yard rushing performances since the program’s return and the offense went for more than 500 total yards in its Oct. 5 game at Bethel.
Mingo remains as the Offensive Coordinator this season and also serves as the offensive line coach. A native of Oregon, Mingo competed collegiately at Greenville College, then was on staff with the program in various rolls from 2009 until 2013. He held responsibilities such as assistant head football coach, recruiting coordinator, offensive line coach and JV head coach. Mingo and his wife Ashley were married in 2010.
BLUEFIELD COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON NOTES (CONT.) WEEK 2 (cont) • 9/6 • AT PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE 1K in Sight... and passed Marion Harris, who has been a member of the Rams’ football team since its return, surpassed the 1,000 career rushing yards mark against Presbyterian College. He needed 19 to meet the mark and finished the game with 22 yards against a stifling defensive line. Hit the Ground Running The Rams’ offense hit the ground running in their season opener, compiling 504 yards of total offense, with 397 yards coming on the ground. Both figures are the second-highest totals in their respective categories since the program’s return--BC had 533 yards of total offense last year against Bethel (Oct. 5) and 420 rushing yards last year against Union (Oct. 19). High Speed Offense Head Coach Ordell Walker likes to get the Rams as many plays as possible. Led by offensive coordinator Aaron Mingo, the Rams reeled off 92 plays in the season opener against UPike: 71 rush plays & 21 pass plays. INT Threat Cornerback Anthony Rivers snagged an interception in UPike’s endzone in the season opener, quickly ensuring his thirdstraight season with an interception. Rivers had four picks to lead the Rams in 2012 and had a pair of pickoffs last season. All-Time W-L With the Rams’ loss to Pikeville, BC moved under .500 (79-80-7) for the first time since the 1930 season. BC won the final game in 1930 to level at 27-27-5. From 1930-1941, BC had a record of 52-30-2. Season Openers After the 62-40 loss against Pikeville, the Rams’ record levels off at 11-11-1 all-time in season openers. The last win in a season opener came in the 1940 season, as BC defeated Virginia Tech’s freshman squad, 13-12 on Sept. 30. WEEK 1 • 8/28 • VS. UPIKE Missing Presence The Rams’ defense will miss Frank Brooks this season due to injury. The junior ranked third on the team in total tackles in 2012 with 61, then led the team in 2013 with 77 tackles en route to All Mid-South Conference second team honors.
Making the Transition Cory Mabry competed at the quarterback position in 15 games for the Rams in 2012 and 2013, but transitions to a wide receiver position this season to better fit within the Rams’ offense. No Weeks Off The Rams will have no weeks off competing in the Mid-South Conference, with challenging opponents week-in and week-out. Four of the Rams’ 2014 opponents-Cumberlands, Georgetown, Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland--were nationally ranked in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Preseason Poll. Cumberland is the only team not in the MSC East Division with the Rams. Core Returners The Rams return a core group of studentathletes from the 2013 season, including its top-three rushers (Adrian Pope, Marion Harris, Sam Bennett) and its top-three receivers (Richard Johnson, Rodrell Smith, David Gianesin). On defense, BC will look to returners Robert Boatright, RJ Buford, Cordell Johns and Anthony Rivers for leadership.
