Bobbin Racer Components The following are a list of components used in the assembly of your Bobbin Racer. The size and length of elastic will affect the performance. Experiment with different elastics, or using multiple elastics. Components Bobbin Dynamic End Static Rod Dynamic Rod Elastic (not shown) Candle Wax (not shown)

Printing The Bobbin Racer is not picky about print settings, however these are the settings we used during build and testing. Consider adding infill to the rods to make them stronger. If you are printing with PLA you may find your dynamic rod brittle during assembly. Printing Medium Default No Raft No Support 10% Infill 2 Shells 0.27mm Layer Height ABS Plastic

Waxing The type of wax used made a difference; we had success with tea-light candles. (http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tealight). We tried waxes that are soft at room temperature but they did not work very well. Experiment with different waxes and report back on your results. Waxing Apply wax on the surfaces between the Dynamic End and the Bobbin. This will change the friction between the two components preventing the bobbin racer from “spinning out”. You can apply wax by rubbing, or dripping hot wax from a candle (Use Caution!) and allowing it to cool. Scrape off the excess wax or the Bobbin Racer will leave a trail of wax.

Assembly Tips: Use string or thread to pull the elastic through the Bobbin Racer. Assembly Assembly is simple. Thread the elastic through the Bobbin and Dynamic End and loop it over the two rods. The elastic should pull everything in place.

Operation Wind the Bobbin Racer by holding the bobbin and spinning the dynamic rod. If you wind it too much the elastic will break or the Bobbin Racer will spin out. Wind it too little and your Bobbin Racer won’t go anywhere at all. The Bobbin Racer can navigate small obstacles. Wind your racer and see who can get theirs to go the furthest, fastest, or longest. Create an obstacle course with lego. We have been able to get our Bobbin Racer to go for several minutes.
