Hard as it may be to believe, Bill Belichick was asked in his Wednesday press conference how many calls he’d already taken from teams asking about possible trades for either Brady or Garoppolo. “Yeah, we’re really just focused on getting ready for Miami,” Belichick said. “That’s what we’ve been working on. That’s what we plan on working on all week.” One of the subjects of the premature trade talk, the guy who will go back to being New England’s backup after Week 4, was asked if it will be harder to accept that role given the early success and joy he’s encountered as a starter. “I don’t know. We’ll cross that when we get there, I guess,” Garroppolo said. “For now, it is what it is.”

BALTIMORE — Evan Longoria homered and had five RBIs to lead the Tampa Bay Rays past the Baltimore Orioles 7-6 MLB in the series opener Thursday ROUNDUP night. The Orioles entered the day one game behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League East. The Rays, who are looking to play spoiler, won their third straight game. The Red Sox rallied for a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees in the bottom of the ninth at Fenway Park in Boston Thursday night. Hanley Ramirez capped the
rally with a three-run, two-out home run. Steven Souza Jr. went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Logan Forsythe also had a pair of hits with an RBI for Tampa Bay, which won for the first time in seven games at Camden Yards this season. The Orioles trailed 7-4 in the eighth when Chris Davis led off with a walk and Matt Wieters doubled to end Dana Eveland’s evening. Danny Farquhar entered and got J.J. Hardy to ground out to first, but Davis scored to cut the margin to 7-5. Another grounder by Michael Bourn pulled Baltimore to within a run. That was as close as the Orioles would get. Alex Colome entered in the ninth and allowed one-out sin-

Baseball Hall of Famer Tony La Russa termed the national anthem protests of Colin Kaepernick “disrespectful” and said he doubts the NFL quarterback’s sincerity, according to Sports Illustrated Now. Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has been taking a knee during the anthem as a protest to bring attention to racial injustice. La Russa, currently a highranking executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks, isn’t buying Kaepernick’s actions. “I was there in the Bay Area when he first was a star, a real star. I never once saw him do anything but promote himself,” La Russa said. “And all of a sudden now he’s a second-stringer and he’s got this mission … and I just don’t trust his sincerity. “And even if he was sincere, there’s ways to express your belief in some of the issues that face
blacks around this country without disrespecting the country you live in or the flag that it represents.” La Russa won two World Series titles as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and one as manager of the Oakland Athletics.
