NEWS & NOTES
LAST TIME OUT...Brandywine dropped a 66-62 home decision to McDaniel College on Wednesday night during the team’s season opener. The Lions led for nearly the entire game before a late rally by McDaniel put the Green Terror in front for good with under two minutes to play. In his debut at Brandywine, senior Terrence Brown produced a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Donte Winfield added 14 points. Brandywine forced 22 turnovers during the setback. SCOUTING BRANDYWINE...Penn State Brandywine competes as a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and Penn State University Athletic Conference. The Lions return two starters and five letter winners from last year’s 6-19 team, while welcoming 11 newcomers. ABOUT PENN STATE BRANDYWINE...Penn State Brandywine is one of the University’s 24 campuses known as a commonwealth campus. Formerly named Penn State Delaware County, the campus officially changed its name to Penn State Brandywine in 2007. Brandywine opened in 1967 in Chester before moving to its current location on Route 352 in Media, Pa., in 1970. The campus began offering four-year degrees 1997 and has offered four-year athletic eligibility since the 2005-06 academic year. Brandywine currently offers 12 four-year bachelor degrees. BRANDYWINE AGAINST NCAA MEMBERS...Brandywine will play seven NCAA member schools during the non-conference portion of its schedule this winter. All-time, the Lions own seven victories against NCAA teams with their first win coming during a 115-111, overtime triumph over Division III Bard College on Nov. 17, 2007. Brandywine is facing a Division I opponent for the first time today. SO YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE...Through the first six days of the NCAA Division I season, Division I teams have faced non-Division I opponents in 87 games. The non-Division I teams have come up on the winning side three times during those contests. Two of the victories came from Division III schools and one from a Division II school. The most recent occurrence of a non-NCAA team defeating a Division I team came on Dec. 16, 2016 when NCCAA member Bethesda University of California knocked off Cal State Northridge 100-95. AT THE PALESTRA...While Brandywine has never met a Division I opponent, the Lions have played at the Palestra five times since 1995, most recently on January 20, 2005, suffering a 55-48 setback to the Quakers’ junior varsity squad. Each of the teams’ meetings at the Palestra came while Brandywine was allowed only two-year eligibility for student-athletes by PSUAC rule. That rule changed to four-year eligibility prior to the 2005-06 season. HE’S PLAYED HERE BEFORE...Brandywine assistant coach Naim Crenshaw, in his first season on the Lions’ coaching staff, played eight games at the Palestra during his four seasons as a member of the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team. From 1998-2002, Crenshaw’s St. Joe’s teams went 4-4 at the Palestra. 1,000-POINT CLUB...Seniors James Fisher and Cyrie Spencer both entered the season needing to score fewer than 200 points to reach 1,000 for their careers. Following the season-opening game against McDaniel, Fisher owns 900 career points, while Spencer has netted 861 points. Brandywine’s 1,000-point club currently has four members. COACH K(AY) VS PENN...Brandywine Head Coach Ben Kay may be serving as head coach for only his second career game today, but the Quakers have faced a coach with a similar moniker previously. Brandywine will be looking to keep the Quakers winless all-time against Coach K(ay) as Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski owns a 5-0 record versus Penn.
