Alabama State has been held to under 20 points in every game during the streak. - The Braves have gone undefeated against SWAC East Division opponents in backto-back seasons. They are looking for their ninth consecutive win over a division foe. - Alcorn is attempting to go 2-0 in league play for the fourth time in the last five years. The Braves are 1-0 in conference for the sixth year in a row. - Junior Isiah Thomas is the reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Week winner. He turned in a career-high 13 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for a loss and also had an interception in Alcorn’s 24-17 victory over Texas Southern. - The Braves have won six SWAC Player of the Week awards in five weeks this year. It’s the most of any team in the league. In addition to Thomas, junior De’Lance Turner has won Offensive Player of the Week twice, senior Lenorris Footman won Offensive Player of the Week, junior Marquis Warford earned Special Teams Player of the Week and sophomore Solomon Muhammad won Defensive Player of the Week. - Alcorn is coming off a wire-to-wire 24-17 win over TSU after taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Braves beat the Tigers for the sixth straight year and improved to 34-18-4 in the all-time series. The game was a non-conference affair. - The Braves rank first in the SWAC in scoring (31.8 ppg), total offense (452.8 ypg), first downs (97), third down conversions (48.6%) and fewest sacks allowed (5). Alcorn’s 48.6 percent on third down conversions ranks 11th in the FCS. - Turner leads the SWAC and ranks top-five in the FCS in yards per carry with 8.6.

Alcorn Notes Continued... He’s also the conference leader in rushing (111.8 ypg), touchdowns (6) and all-purpose yards (145.8 ypg). In the team’s 48-31 win over Southern, he registered 272 yards rushing which was the second-most in school history. Turner registered three touchdowns including two on the ground and one receiving. Alcorn improved to 36-27-2 all-time against Southern and have won six of the last seven meetings. - In the season-opening 50-21 win over Miles College, Turner rushed for 131 yards and averaged 14.6 yards per carry. His 88-yard TD run was the longest in school history. Alcorn scored six touchdowns in the game; Footman accounted for three of them with two on the ground and one in the air. - Footman ranks No. 8 all-time in school history in both passing touchdowns (29) and rushing yards (1,774). He’s 10th in passing yards (3,545). This season, Footman leads the SWAC in both passing (234.8 ypg) and total offense (287.4 ypg). - Against McNeese State, Footman led all of FCS that week with a career-high 424 passing yards. He completed passes to eight different receivers, threw three touchdowns and also caught a touchdown on a trick play. - Muhammad, a linebacker, ranks top-five in the league in both tackles (8.6 per game) and tackles for a loss (5.5 per game). He notched a career game against Southern where he recorded a career-high 13 tackles, forced a fumble and ran back a 71-yard interception return. It was the second time this year Muhammad tallied double-digits in tackles as he wrapped-up 10 in the season-opener against Miles College. - The Braves moved up two spots to No. 4 in this weeks BOXTOROW HBCU Coaches Poll. Alcorn is also receiving four votes in the FCS Coaches Poll. - Warford, a threat on both kick returns and punt returns, ranks second in the conference with 142.0 all purpose yards per game. He ran back a punt 72 yards for a score against Miles College. - Six different receivers have caught touchdown passes for Alcorn this season. Senior Norlando Veals ranks third in the SWAC in both receptions per game (4.8) and receiving yards (85.4 ypg). Warford is fourth in the league with 4.2 receptions per game, and fifth in receiving yards (48.2 ypg). - The Braves played FIU at a neutral site in Birmingham, Alabama. The game was originally supposed to be played Saturday in Miami but was moved due to a Friday due to Hurricane Irma. - Alcorn trailed FIU 10-7 late in the fourth quarter when sophomore kicker Corey McCullough drilled a 49-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 with 3:54 remaining. It marked the second-longest field goal in school history behind a 50-yarder by George Green Jr. in 1984 against Alabama State.

Back-to-Back-to-Back SWAC East Champions Alcorn Notes Continued... - McCullough, who is both the kicker and punter, leads the SWAC with 43.0 yards per punt which also ranks top-15 in the FCS. He’s second in the league in both scoring (7.8 ppg) and field goals made (7). - Alcorn’s win over Miles College marked its fifth consecutive victory in a home opener. The Braves have scored at least 50 points three times during the streak. - In its 26th season at Spinks-Casem Stadium, Alcorn is 71-52 all-time at home. The stadium opened in 1992. - Alcorn is the three-time defending SWAC East Division champion and was picked to win the division again in the 2017 Preseason Poll. Notable Alumni - Alcorn graduate Donald Driver was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in July 2017. He is Green Bay’s all-time leader in both receptions (743) and receiving yards (10,137). - Leslie Frazier, who ranks second all-time in school history and sixth in the SWAC with 20 interceptions, was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in August 2017. Frazier served as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2010 to 2013 and currently works for the Buffalo Bills as the defensive coordinator. - Alcorn is the alma mater of the legendary Steve “Air” McNair who led the Tennessee Titans to four playoff appearances as the starting quarterback including Super Bowl XXXIV. He was selected to three Pro Bowls and was All-Pro and Co-MVP in 2003. McNair was the 1994 Walter Payton Award winner for the best player in NCAA Division I-AA. - Both Driver and McNair are candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. The ballot includes 108 modern-era nominees. The list will be decreased to 25 semifinalists in November and 15 finalists in January. - Alcorn has had 52 student-athletes play in the NFL including 33 draft picks. Six Alcornites played at least 10 seasons (Donald Driver, Jimmie Giles, Steve McNair, Lawrence Pillars, Torence Small and Dave Washington).

JACK SPINKSMARINO CASEM STADIUM In its 26th season, Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium was constructed by architect Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons and opened in 1992. It has a playing surface of natural grass with a capacity of 22,500. The stadium is also the home of the Alcorn State soccer program. John Robert “Jack” Spinks (Aug. 15 1930 - Sept. 29, 1994) played five seasons in the NFL. He was the first Brave to play in the NFL and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1952. Marino Casem was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He coached Alcorn to four Black College National Championships and seven SWAC titles. Casem also served as the athletic director at Alcorn from 1966-1986. After that, he served for many years on the NCAA’s Football Rules Committee and Executive Committee. Casem has also been inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame, Alcorn Hall of Honor and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He’s received the National Football Foundation’s Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football award and the Football Writers Association Citation of Honor.

Fred McNair
Head Coach (Second Season) • Sixth Season at Alcorn • Alcorn ‘92 Fred McNair was named Alcorn State University 21st head football coach on February 2, 2016. He brought the Braves to the SWAC title game in his first season at the helm after winning the SWAC East Division title outright. McNair, who was previously the quarterbacks coach, is entering his sixth year as a member of the Alcorn football staff. McNair began his college football career as a wide receiver at Alcorn State University in 1986 before moving to quarterback his junior season. After the switch, McNair went on to finish fifth in Division 1-AA in passing efficiency his senior year and was named to the All-SWAC second team in 1989. He received his bachelor’s in 1992 and furthered his education with a master’s in 1996 from Alcorn State University. McNair is responsible for turning Alcorn quarterback John Gibbs Jr. into a force on the field. Under the tutelage of McNair, Gibbs passed for 2,482 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1,006 yards in 2014. In 2013, Gibbs passed for 2,567 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed for 455 yards. This past season, after Gibbs went down with an injury in the middle of the season, Lenorris Footman stepped in and found success because of McNair’s coaching methods. Footman rushed for
1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns and passed for 1,106 yards and 14 scores. He was hired as head football coach, athletic director, and teacher at Collins High school in April 2011. The CHS Tigers made it to the second round of the 2011 3A football playoffs. During the summer months, he works as a football camp director for Mercedes Lewis in Long Beach, California; Jerrius Norwood in Brandon, Mississippi; Brett Farve and Adailus Thomas, both in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is also a Dixie Youth baseball coach and commissioner in Covington County as well as a youth football coach. If that is not enough, McNair is also a motivational speaker at churches, schools, and social events throughout Mississippi. He is definitely a man on the move with a vision seeking anyone that he can help. In addition, McNair coached at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi for four years. During his tenure at Millsaps, they won two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships. In June 2009, McNair was hired as a teacher and coach at Mt. Olive High School. He was the offensive coordinator for the Mt. Olive Pirates. The Pirates won the 1A State Football Championships in 2009 and 2010. Upon McNair’s retirement from the Arena Football League (AFL), he held various records. He is a seasoned Arena Football League veteran (Albany 1993-95); Florida (1996-00); and Carolina (2000-01). He holds almost all passing records, including passing yards in a season (3,269 in 1999), passing touchdowns in a season (60, 1998), passing touchdowns in a game (8, four times) and passing yards in a game (362, 2000). McNair also holds all of Carolina’s passing records and became the 13th quarterback in AFL history to surpass the 10,000 yard passing career passing mark (vs. Carolina in 2000). McNair was ranked in the top eight in the AFL in all-time passes attempted, passes completed and passing yards. Over his eight-year career, McNair completed over 57 percent of his passes, while throwing for 16,591 yards (8th all-time) and 291 touchdowns. McNair had a career season in 2001, setting career highs with 3,271 yards, 63 touchdowns, 434 attempts, 282 completions, a 65.0 competition percentage and a 118.16 quarterback rating. He is the original “Air McNair” and is the brother of the late Tennessee Titans quarterback and 2003 CoMost Valuable Player, Steve “Air II” McNair. McNair and his wife, Barbara, reside in Collins with their son, Ahkeem.

EXPLOSIVE OFFENSIVE PLAYS RESULT IN OPENING NIGHT VICTORY FOR BRAVES 50-21 To kick-off the 26th season at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, the Alcorn State University football program scored six touchdowns en route to a 50-21 win over Miles College on Saturday evening in the season opener for both teams. Senior De’Lance Turner registered a pair of touchdowns for the Braves (1-0) including one in the air and one on the ground. He finished with 128 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. Senior quarterback Lenorris Footman tallied two rushing touchdowns and one throwing. He recorded 241 passing yards and 92 rushing. Eight different receivers caught a pass in the game for the Braves. Senior Norlando Veals led the way with 81 yards, while junior Marquis Warford hauled in 69. Warford also tallied a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown. Defensively, sophomore Solomon Muhammad stood out with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Junior Leishaun Ealey also finished in double-figures with 10 tackles. Miles (0-1), a Division II program from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), was led by running back Justin Hardy who notched 111 rushing yards and a touchdown.

A hard-fought battle that could have gone either way just didn’t end in favor of the Alcorn State University football program as FIU ended on top 17-10 at Legion Field in a neutral site contest Friday evening. The Braves (1-1) trailed 10-7 late in the fourth quarter when sophomore kicker Corey McCullough drilled a 49-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 with 3:54 remaining. It marked the second-longest field goal in school history behind a 50-yarder by George Green Jr. in 1984 against Alabama State. FIU (1-1) responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive for the decisive 17-10 score. The big play was a 40-yard pass from Alex McGough to Julian Williams. The Panthers scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak by McGough with 1:12 remaining. Alcorn had one last chance as senior quarterback Lenorris Footman connected with sophomore Tavares Johnson at the FIU 45-yard line with 12 seconds left, but the Braves could not get any closer. Alcorn attempted a last-second Hail Mary that fell incomplete along the right sideline of the end zone. Footman passed for 191 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a team-high 56 yards. Senior De’Lance Turner, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, tallied 34 rushing yards on nine carries. Defensively, junior Brady Smith submitted a career-high 14 tackles. Sophomore Solomon Muhammad posted nine tackles and a pair of sacks.

Despite a career-high 424 passing yards by senior Lenorris Footman, McNeese State came out on top of a seesaw affair 34-27 over the Alcorn State University football program Saturday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
Senior De’Lance Turner posted the second-most rushing yards in school history, 272, as the ground attack for the Alcorn State University football program could not be stopped in a 48-31 victory over Southern in the conference-opener Saturday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
The Braves (1-2, 0-0 SWAC) had an opportunity late with the ball in a tied 20-20 game, but the McNeese (2-1, 0-1 SLC) defense was able to force a three-and-out to get the ball back. On the ensuing Cowboys drive, McNeese drove down the field and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 33-yard pass from James Tabary to Kent Shelby with 26 seconds left.
Turner, from McClain, Mississippi, averaged 13.0 yards per carry for the Braves (2-2, 1-0 SWAC) as he was fed the ball 21 times. He rushed for two touchdowns and also caught one.
Footman threw for three touchdowns and also caught one on a trick play. He connected with eight different wide receivers including senior Norlando Veals who tallied 112 receiving yards, one touchdown pass and a touchdown throw. Footman also threw touchdown passes to junior Marquis Warford and senior De’Lance Turner. Warford recorded 90 receiving yards, Turner 77 and junior Raidarious Anderson 80. Defensively, junior Myshawn Smith and junior Solomon Muhammad, the reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Week, posted eight tackles apiece.

Turner led the Braves to a whopping 402 rushing yards as a team. Junior P.J. Simmons ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Lenorris Footman rushed for 70 yards. Footman, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, threw for two touchdowns. He connected with senior Marquis Warford on a 14-yard route in the third quarter. Defensively, sophomore Solomon Muhammad shined again with a game-high 13 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. He returned an interception 71 yards in the first quarter. Junior Leishaun Ealey was also in double-figures with 10 tackles which matched his career-high. Southern’s Devon Benn rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown.

FAST START PROPELS ALCORN TO 24-17 VICTORY OVER TEXAS SOUTHERN The Alcorn State University football program jumped out to a two-touchdown advantage in the first quarter and never surrendered the lead in a wire-to-wire 24-17 win over Texas Southern in a non-conference game Friday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. Alcorn (3-2, 1-0 SWAC) scored on its first drive of the game on a 45-yard pass to senior Norlando Veals. The Braves increased the edge to 14-0 after an eight-yard run by junior P.J. Simmons. The Tigers (0-4, 0-1 SWAC) could not get the deficit below seven points the rest of the way. The Braves rushed for 244 yards as a team. Senior De’Lance Turner, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, totaled 115 rushing yards. Simmons ended with 88 yards and a touchdown, while senior quarterback Lenorris Footman rushed for 41 yards and a score. In the air, Footman threw for 241 yards and a touchdown. More than half of his yards went to Veals who hauled in six catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Alcorn was led by junior Isiah Thomas who turned in a career game. He tripled his career-high with 13 tackles including three for a loss and also recorded an interception. Junior Leishaun Ealey notched eight tackles with a pair of pass break-ups.

Back-to-Back-to-Back SWAC East Champions ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn. Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presbyterians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components. Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the threeyear graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, including laundry, cost about $5 a month. In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres. In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s
physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University. The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions. As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic backgrounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University operates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, including the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees. The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State University’s 19th president. Alcorn Notes Continued... He’s also the conference leader in rushing (111.8 ypg), touchdowns (6) and all-purpose yards (145.8 ypg). In the team’s 48-31 win over Southern, he registered 272 yards rushing which was the second-most in school history. Turner registered three touchdowns including two on the ground and one receiving. Alcorn improved to 36-27-2 all-time against Southern and have won six of the last seven meetings. - In the season-opening 50-21 win over Miles College, Turner rushed for 131 yards and averaged 14.6 yards per carry. His 88-yard TD run was the longest in school history. Alcorn scored six touchdowns in the game; Footman accounted for three of them with two on the ground and one in the air. - Footman ranks No. 8 all-time in school history in both passing touchdowns (29) and rushing yards (1,774). He’s 10th in passing yards (3,545). This season, Footman leads the SWAC in both passing (234.8 ypg) and total offense (287.4 ypg). - Against McNeese State, Footman led all of FCS that week with a career-high 424 passing yards. He completed passes to eight different receivers, threw three touchdowns and also caught a touchdown on a trick play. - Muhammad, a linebacker, ranks top-five in the league in both tackles (8.6 per game) and tackles for a loss (5.5 per game). He notched a career game against Southern where he recorded a career-high 13 tackles, forced a fumble and ran back a 71-yard interception return. It was the second time this year Muhammad tallied double-digits in tackles as he wrapped-up 10 in the season-opener against Miles College. - The Braves moved up two spots to No. 4 in this weeks BOXTOROW HBCU Coaches Poll. Alcorn is also receiving four votes in the FCS Coaches Poll. - Warford, a threat on both kick returns and punt returns, ranks second in the conference with 142.0 all purpose yards per game. He ran back a punt 72 yards for a score against Miles College. - Six different receivers have caught touchdown passes for Alcorn this season. Senior Norlando Veals ranks third in the SWAC in both receptions per game (4.8) and receiving yards (85.4 ypg). Warford is fourth in the league with 4.2 receptions per game, and fifth in receiving yards (48.2 ypg). - The Braves played FIU at a neutral site in Birmingham, Alabama. The game was originally supposed to be played Saturday in Miami but was moved due to a Friday due to Hurricane Irma. - Alcorn trailed FIU 10-7 late in the fourth quarter when sophomore kicker Corey McCullough drilled a 49-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 with 3:54 remaining. It marked the second-longest field goal in school history behind a 50-yarder by George Green Jr. in 1984 against Alabama State.

Back-to-Back-to-Back SWAC East Champions Alcorn Notes Continued... - McCullough, who is both the kicker and punter, leads the SWAC with 43.0 yards per punt which also ranks top-15 in the FCS. He’s second in the league in both scoring (7.8 ppg) and field goals made (7). - Alcorn’s win over Miles College marked its fifth consecutive victory in a home opener. The Braves have scored at least 50 points three times during the streak. - In its 26th season at Spinks-Casem Stadium, Alcorn is 71-52 all-time at home. The stadium opened in 1992. - Alcorn is the three-time defending SWAC East Division champion and was picked to win the division again in the 2017 Preseason Poll. Notable Alumni - Alcorn graduate Donald Driver was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in July 2017. He is Green Bay’s all-time leader in both receptions (743) and receiving yards (10,137). - Leslie Frazier, who ranks second all-time in school history and sixth in the SWAC with 20 interceptions, was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in August 2017. Frazier served as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2010 to 2013 and currently works for the Buffalo Bills as the defensive coordinator. - Alcorn is the alma mater of the legendary Steve “Air” McNair who led the Tennessee Titans to four playoff appearances as the starting quarterback including Super Bowl XXXIV. He was selected to three Pro Bowls and was All-Pro and Co-MVP in 2003. McNair was the 1994 Walter Payton Award winner for the best player in NCAA Division I-AA. - Both Driver and McNair are candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. The ballot includes 108 modern-era nominees. The list will be decreased to 25 semifinalists in November and 15 finalists in January. - Alcorn has had 52 student-athletes play in the NFL including 33 draft picks. Six Alcornites played at least 10 seasons (Donald Driver, Jimmie Giles, Steve McNair, Lawrence Pillars, Torence Small and Dave Washington).

JACK SPINKSMARINO CASEM STADIUM In its 26th season, Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium was constructed by architect Cooke Douglass Farr Lemons and opened in 1992. It has a playing surface of natural grass with a capacity of 22,500. The stadium is also the home of the Alcorn State soccer program. John Robert “Jack” Spinks (Aug. 15 1930 - Sept. 29, 1994) played five seasons in the NFL. He was the first Brave to play in the NFL and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1952. Marino Casem was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He coached Alcorn to four Black College National Championships and seven SWAC titles. Casem also served as the athletic director at Alcorn from 1966-1986. After that, he served for many years on the NCAA’s Football Rules Committee and Executive Committee. Casem has also been inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame, Alcorn Hall of Honor and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He’s received the National Football Foundation’s Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football award and the Football Writers Association Citation of Honor.

Fred McNair
Head Coach (Second Season) • Sixth Season at Alcorn • Alcorn ‘92 Fred McNair was named Alcorn State University 21st head football coach on February 2, 2016. He brought the Braves to the SWAC title game in his first season at the helm after winning the SWAC East Division title outright. McNair, who was previously the quarterbacks coach, is entering his sixth year as a member of the Alcorn football staff. McNair began his college football career as a wide receiver at Alcorn State University in 1986 before moving to quarterback his junior season. After the switch, McNair went on to finish fifth in Division 1-AA in passing efficiency his senior year and was named to the All-SWAC second team in 1989. He received his bachelor’s in 1992 and furthered his education with a master’s in 1996 from Alcorn State University. McNair is responsible for turning Alcorn quarterback John Gibbs Jr. into a force on the field. Under the tutelage of McNair, Gibbs passed for 2,482 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1,006 yards in 2014. In 2013, Gibbs passed for 2,567 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed for 455 yards. This past season, after Gibbs went down with an injury in the middle of the season, Lenorris Footman stepped in and found success because of McNair’s coaching methods. Footman rushed for
1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns and passed for 1,106 yards and 14 scores. He was hired as head football coach, athletic director, and teacher at Collins High school in April 2011. The CHS Tigers made it to the second round of the 2011 3A football playoffs. During the summer months, he works as a football camp director for Mercedes Lewis in Long Beach, California; Jerrius Norwood in Brandon, Mississippi; Brett Farve and Adailus Thomas, both in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is also a Dixie Youth baseball coach and commissioner in Covington County as well as a youth football coach. If that is not enough, McNair is also a motivational speaker at churches, schools, and social events throughout Mississippi. He is definitely a man on the move with a vision seeking anyone that he can help. In addition, McNair coached at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi for four years. During his tenure at Millsaps, they won two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships. In June 2009, McNair was hired as a teacher and coach at Mt. Olive High School. He was the offensive coordinator for the Mt. Olive Pirates. The Pirates won the 1A State Football Championships in 2009 and 2010. Upon McNair’s retirement from the Arena Football League (AFL), he held various records. He is a seasoned Arena Football League veteran (Albany 1993-95); Florida (1996-00); and Carolina (2000-01). He holds almost all passing records, including passing yards in a season (3,269 in 1999), passing touchdowns in a season (60, 1998), passing touchdowns in a game (8, four times) and passing yards in a game (362, 2000). McNair also holds all of Carolina’s passing records and became the 13th quarterback in AFL history to surpass the 10,000 yard passing career passing mark (vs. Carolina in 2000). McNair was ranked in the top eight in the AFL in all-time passes attempted, passes completed and passing yards. Over his eight-year career, McNair completed over 57 percent of his passes, while throwing for 16,591 yards (8th all-time) and 291 touchdowns. McNair had a career season in 2001, setting career highs with 3,271 yards, 63 touchdowns, 434 attempts, 282 completions, a 65.0 competition percentage and a 118.16 quarterback rating. He is the original “Air McNair” and is the brother of the late Tennessee Titans quarterback and 2003 CoMost Valuable Player, Steve “Air II” McNair. McNair and his wife, Barbara, reside in Collins with their son, Ahkeem.

EXPLOSIVE OFFENSIVE PLAYS RESULT IN OPENING NIGHT VICTORY FOR BRAVES 50-21 To kick-off the 26th season at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, the Alcorn State University football program scored six touchdowns en route to a 50-21 win over Miles College on Saturday evening in the season opener for both teams. Senior De’Lance Turner registered a pair of touchdowns for the Braves (1-0) including one in the air and one on the ground. He finished with 128 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. Senior quarterback Lenorris Footman tallied two rushing touchdowns and one throwing. He recorded 241 passing yards and 92 rushing. Eight different receivers caught a pass in the game for the Braves. Senior Norlando Veals led the way with 81 yards, while junior Marquis Warford hauled in 69. Warford also tallied a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown. Defensively, sophomore Solomon Muhammad stood out with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Junior Leishaun Ealey also finished in double-figures with 10 tackles. Miles (0-1), a Division II program from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), was led by running back Justin Hardy who notched 111 rushing yards and a touchdown.

A hard-fought battle that could have gone either way just didn’t end in favor of the Alcorn State University football program as FIU ended on top 17-10 at Legion Field in a neutral site contest Friday evening. The Braves (1-1) trailed 10-7 late in the fourth quarter when sophomore kicker Corey McCullough drilled a 49-yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 with 3:54 remaining. It marked the second-longest field goal in school history behind a 50-yarder by George Green Jr. in 1984 against Alabama State. FIU (1-1) responded with a seven-play, 80-yard drive for the decisive 17-10 score. The big play was a 40-yard pass from Alex McGough to Julian Williams. The Panthers scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak by McGough with 1:12 remaining. Alcorn had one last chance as senior quarterback Lenorris Footman connected with sophomore Tavares Johnson at the FIU 45-yard line with 12 seconds left, but the Braves could not get any closer. Alcorn attempted a last-second Hail Mary that fell incomplete along the right sideline of the end zone. Footman passed for 191 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a team-high 56 yards. Senior De’Lance Turner, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, tallied 34 rushing yards on nine carries. Defensively, junior Brady Smith submitted a career-high 14 tackles. Sophomore Solomon Muhammad posted nine tackles and a pair of sacks.

Despite a career-high 424 passing yards by senior Lenorris Footman, McNeese State came out on top of a seesaw affair 34-27 over the Alcorn State University football program Saturday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
Senior De’Lance Turner posted the second-most rushing yards in school history, 272, as the ground attack for the Alcorn State University football program could not be stopped in a 48-31 victory over Southern in the conference-opener Saturday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
The Braves (1-2, 0-0 SWAC) had an opportunity late with the ball in a tied 20-20 game, but the McNeese (2-1, 0-1 SLC) defense was able to force a three-and-out to get the ball back. On the ensuing Cowboys drive, McNeese drove down the field and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 33-yard pass from James Tabary to Kent Shelby with 26 seconds left.
Turner, from McClain, Mississippi, averaged 13.0 yards per carry for the Braves (2-2, 1-0 SWAC) as he was fed the ball 21 times. He rushed for two touchdowns and also caught one.
Footman threw for three touchdowns and also caught one on a trick play. He connected with eight different wide receivers including senior Norlando Veals who tallied 112 receiving yards, one touchdown pass and a touchdown throw. Footman also threw touchdown passes to junior Marquis Warford and senior De’Lance Turner. Warford recorded 90 receiving yards, Turner 77 and junior Raidarious Anderson 80. Defensively, junior Myshawn Smith and junior Solomon Muhammad, the reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Week, posted eight tackles apiece.

Footman, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, threw for two touchdowns. He connected with senior Marquis Warford on a 14-yard route in the third quarter. FAST START PROPELS ALCORN TO 24-17 VICTORY OVER TEXAS SOUTHERN The Alcorn State University football program jumped out to a two-touchdown advantage in the first quarter and never surrendered the lead in a wire-to-wire 24-17 win over Texas Southern in a non-conference game Friday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. Alcorn (3-2, 1-0 SWAC) scored on its first drive of the game on a 45-yard pass to senior Norlando Veals. The Braves increased the edge to 14-0 after an eight-yard run by junior P.J. Simmons. The Tigers (0-4, 0-1 SWAC) could not get the deficit below seven points the rest of the way. The Braves rushed for 244 yards as a team. Senior De’Lance Turner, the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner, totaled 115 rushing yards. Simmons ended with 88 yards and a touchdown, while senior quarterback Lenorris Footman rushed for 41 yards and a score. In the air, Footman threw for 241 yards and a touchdown. More than half of his yards went to Veals who hauled in six catches for 140 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Alcorn was led by junior Isiah Thomas who turned in a career game. He tripled his career-high with 13 tackles including three for a loss and also recorded an interception. Junior Leishaun Ealey notched eight tackles with a pair of pass break-ups.

Back-to-Back-to-Back SWAC East Champions ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn. Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presbyterians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components. Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the threeyear graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, including laundry, cost about $5 a month. In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres. In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s
physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University. The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions. As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic backgrounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University operates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, including the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees. The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State University’s 19th president.
