Breakout Group Title: Ethical and Social Implications of Automated Vehicles Summary of Key Findings/Lessons Learned from Breakout Discussion: • No easy answers to ethical dilemmas, and no answer is black and white • No one is hard coding ethical decisions (but based on the logic behind the hard coding, actions taken by the vehicle may appear to be making a decision based on ethical considerations) • We can and should leverage advances made in bioethics over the past 50 years • EOMs and developers should employ ethicists to ensure these discussions are happening during the design phase ▬►go above and beyond the minimum legal standard of care • All data may need to be open (to public and other researchers)

Breakout Group Title: Ethical and Social Implications of Automated Vehicles Recommended Action Items: • If data are to be shared, need standards (What data? How much? What format?) • After computer modeling and simulation, need on-road testing • This track should continue in future meetings, covering: • Lessons learned from on-road testing • Lessons learned from any accidents and incidents over the previous year • New ethical considerations based on new technological advances
