Population Estimates Population estimates are provided by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and the Greater London Authority (GLA). The ONS recently conducted a review of its national population projections and now estimates Brent’s population for June 2009 to be 255,5001. This represents a decrease of 7,500 people since the 2001 Census. The ONS estimates there are 128, 200 males and 127,200 females living in Brent. The GLA population estimate for Brent is 282,6722. An independent population study commissioned by Brent estimated the population as closer to 289, 000 in 20073.

Population Density
Brent is one of the most densely populated Outer London Boroughs. The average density is 61 persons per hectare (pph), with the highest rates in the south east of the borough. Brent is the 15th largest borough in London, with an area of 4,323 hectares (43 square kms) and a population of 263,464 in 2001. Population Change
According to the GLA and independent research, Brent’s Population is growing In 2009, GLA released high and low population level projections (PLP) for Brent’s wards. The wards which are predicted to have the highest levels of growth by 2020 are: Tokyington, Queensbury, and Mapesbury7.
Modelled data within the customer segmentation model Mosaic Public Sector shows that households who live in the south of the borough have a higher likelihood of having only lived here for less than 1 year

Migration
Brent has very high levels of migration into the borough compared to the rest of London. Brent has the second highest number of people born outside of the UK 8 Brent has a high inflow of migration at 9100 in 2007/08; this was the 6th highest in London9. National Insurance Number (NINo) registrations are a means of measuring migration into a borough. In 2008/09 Brent had the second highest number of adults registering for NINos with 18,78010. Brent has the largest proportion of ethnic minorities in London with 71 per cent of the population from an ethnic group other than White British. • • • •

Deprivation13
Whilst many of Brent’s residents are affluent, parts of the borough continue to experience high levels of deprivation. Brent is ranked 53rd out of 354 boroughs in the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2007 (1 = Most Deprived, 354 = Least Deprived). This is a drop of 28 places from our position of 81 in 2004. This moves us from being within the 25% most deprived local authorities in the country to be within the 15% most deprived. Brent is the most deprived borough compared with our west London neighbours. Increasing levels of deprivation in Brent’s is visible 19 of the 21 wards. Only Harlesden and Queen’s Park wards have become less deprived compared to respective IMD levels in 2004. These wards were already experiencing high levels of deprivation. Deprivation levels in the south of the borough have increased, in particular the areas of Barnhill, Willesden Green, Dollis Hill and Dudden Hill. New pockets of deprivation have appeared in the north of the Borough in historically affluent areas of Preston, Kenton and Queensbury have all become more deprived. Maps of IMD in Brent 2004 and 2007

The IMD measures seven domains: Income, Employment, Health, Education, Barriers to Housing and Services14, Crime and Living Environment. Brent is in the top 20 most income deprived local authorities in the country. Just over 16% of Brent’s SOAs are within the top 10% most deprived. Almost 64% of Brent’s SOAs are within the top 10% most deprived in the country for Barriers to Housing and Services (compared to 36% in 2004). Brent unemployment rate has been steadily increasing since April 2008, and are marginally above the rates for London and Great Britain. Employment rate for April 2009 to March 2010 was 67.7%, representing a 1.1% decease since Jan 09 -Dec 09 Employment rate is marginally below both the London average (68.8%) and the Great Britain (70.3%). Brent is now ranked 16th in London for employment levels, representing a decrease of one place from last year. Ethnic employment rate of 64.4% (2nd quarter 2009) is below the average employment rate for Brent (most recent figures), Employment rates for Pakistanis/Bangladeshis are 58.8%, up from 37.8%. The employment rate for Black or Black British is 59.3%, which has decreased from 64.4%. Brent’s unemployment rate is 9.6 (Apr 2009-Mar 2010).The rate is marginally above the London rate (9.1) and Great Britain average (7.9). Claimant Count19
Brent has had a sharp increase in people claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) and National Insurance credits since the recession began. In October 2010, Brent’s JSA claimant rate was 5.3% (9,069) DWP figures show that JSA claimant count in Brent has been slightly deceasing since April 2010, with 539 less JSA claimants. JSA claimant counts in the priority neighbourhoods far exceed the Brent average. As of May 2010, 12,450 people in Brent claimed a type of incapacity benefits, 4,605 of these claimants were for mental health.. There is a gap of 630 claimants between the highest and lowest wards for people claiming incapacity benefit. There were 985 people claiming in Stonebridge and 275 people claiming in Kenton. There is a 555 gap between the highest and lowest wards for people claiming disability living allowance. There are 865 people claiming in Stonebridge and 310 people claiming in Northwick Park. 11. Housing and Council Tax Benefits21 The impact of the recession can also be seen in the increase of people claiming housing and council tax benefits from the council. Brent’s total number of recipients for housing and council tax benefits in June 2010 is 38,339. Since June 2008, there has been a borough wide increase of 2,765 (7.8%) of Brent residents eligible for this benefit. Every ward in Brent has experienced a growth in the number of residents eligible for this benefit, with the largest increase in Dudden Hill (15.4%), and the smallest increase in Sudbury (3.4%). Brent tops the London boroughs for people with other qualifications, and is closely followed by the boroughs of Newham and Ealing. All three of these London Boroughs have very high migrant populations Since 2006, the figures for Brent residents with ‘other qualifications have fluctuated. The numbers jumped from 52,000 in 2006, to 65,700 in 2007, then went from 65,000 in 2008, to 52,900 in 2009 Brent figures for no qualifications had been declining between 2004 and 2008, however, in 2009 the figures jumped back up to 18,400. Brent does remain however, below both the London (11.8%) and Great Britain (12.3%) with 9.8% of the working population
