Brevard Academy: A Challenge Foundation Academy

Dear Parents, Welcome to Brevard Academy: A Challenge Foundation Academy! We are going to have a great school year, and we’re looking forward to working with you to provide rewarding learning experiences for your children during the 2013-2014 school year. Throughout this handbook, we have listed items that are important for you to know concerning the Second Grade. PLEASE KEEP THIS DOCUMENT IN YOUR CHILD’S W.O.W. FOLDER SO THAT YOU MAY REFER TO IT THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR IF NECESSARY. How to contact your child’s teacher: 1) The best way is through email. Mrs. Best’s email is [email protected], Mrs. Geer-Hardwick’s is [email protected] 2) A note in your child’s folder – please feel free to write a note and put it in your child’s WOW binder in the zipper compartment. 3) Call the school – the office will pass along a message to us if you need them to do so. The office number is 828-885-2665

Absences, Attendance, and Arrivals and Dismissals A student will be tardy if he or she arrives in Searcy after 7:50 a.m. The student will need to check in at the office and receive an admission slip if he or she arrives past 7:50a.m. Coach Galloway will be documenting all students that arrive after 7:50 a.m. and turning them into the office to be marked Tardy. If a student is absent, he or she must turn in a signed excuse slip from the doctor or parent in order to be excused. A student will have a number of days equal to the number missed to complete and turn in make-up work. If your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please let us know as many days in advance as possible. We will provide you with suggestions of alternate learning activities you can do with your child during his/her absence. Most of the work we do at school occurs in the classroom and requires active participation from the students. A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is key. When picking up your child in the afternoon please put the green paper with their name in the lower left hand corner of your windshield.

Behavior Management Our classroom is a small community where teamwork and good relationships are expected. We will spend time learning class procedures and practicing them. Each student is expected to act within our standards of behavior. To establish good order and help the children learn selfcontrol, they will be guided to respect themselves and their companions through specific directions, positive reinforcement, suggested new activities and responsible actions.

Rules: 1. Be respectful of yourself and others. 2. Follow Directions. 3. Keep your hands, feet and all objects to yourself. 4. Be an attentive listener. 5. Always do your best. ConsequencesSecond grade uses a color card system ( the same as Kindergarten and first) to notify families of their child's behavior. Please daily check your child's WOW binder to address any issues that may need immediate responses. Every child starts the day with a "blue" card. This color means your child made good choices all day, and followed the rules. The next color is "green". Green means your child has needed a reminder to follow the rules. No further action is required. Parents may consider green a warning. If there is continued misbehavior, the result will be a "yellow" card, and then a "red" card. Teachers, parents, and possibly the school's director may need to have a conference to discuss the best way to improve the learning environment for everyone. Children do have the opportunity to move their cards back a color if there is significant effort to improve their behavior. On a positive note, a "purple" card may be earned for an especially kind act or an outstanding day. Purple cards are something to be proud of!

Birthdays Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring a treat for the class. We will celebrate summer birthdays during the last few weeks of school. If you are sending invitations to class, please send enough for the entire class or all of the boys/girls. Otherwise please consider mailing invitations rather than sending them to school.

Extra Clothes Please send a complete set of extra uniform clothes with your child that can be kept at school for an occasional mud puddle, juice spill or bathroom accident. Please label your child’s clothes and put them in a labeled zip loc bag. If soiled clothes are sent home, please remember to send a clean set of clothes the next day.

Field Trips Field trips will be taken throughout the school year to enhance your child's learning. Be sure to fill out the proper paperwork and return funds in a timely manner. Brevard Academy has two school buses that will be taking students to and from the field trips. From time to time we may ask for parent volunteers to assist in taking charge of a small group of students. We do ask that younger siblings stay home, so that parents can give full attention to the students for which they are responsible. You must return each child back to designated meeting times and spaces. We expect the same behavior inside the classroom as outside the classroom for students. Children who do not exhibit self control will have their parents contacted to discuss their behavior. The parent/guardian may be asked to pick up their child from the field trip early and the student may be prevented from participating in other field trips if behavior cannot be corrected to an acceptable standard.

Homework & Grading Homework is worthwhile and important to your child’s success in school. We use it as a way to review and practice important skills learned in the classroom. Homework encourages responsibility and should not be viewed as a punishment, but as a way to help your child learn and practice important skills. One way to teach responsibility is to expect your child to complete homework. Parents, you are the key to making homework a positive experience for your child. Please make it a priority. Some ways you can help your child with homework are: 1. Have a specific time each day to complete homework and provide the necessary supplies. 2. Provide a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place with no distractions. 3. Most importantly, help your child, but do not do their homework for them. If your child is struggling with an assignment, contact your teacher or write a note and attach it to the homework.

Homework is normally assigned Monday - Thursday. Homework is not assigned on Fridays. Students should expect assigned reading time in addition to homework. Students will fill out a school planner on a daily basis in which they are to copy their homework into. The teacher will check the planner daily to ensure that it is filled out properly (and sign it). This will allow you to know exactly what we expect the child to do during the evening. Sometimes we will have a statement that tells the student to explain a particular vocabulary word or ask them to tell you about a particular topic we learned about during the day. This does not need to be written out but we do expect them to give you some type of detail. This allows the student to “become the teacher” and we encourage you to ask questions to extend their knowledge. Students in 2nd grade will receive number grades based on the following percentages: Homework 25%, Classwork and Participation 25%, Tests and Assessments 50%.

Lunch Students are welcome to bring their own lunch from home or purchase a lunch through the school lunch program. Our lunch program will be provided by Quixote restaurant this year. The price is $3.50 and may be paid daily, weekly, monthly, etc. Please make checks out to Quixote. Lunch menus will be emailed once a week to you and you can always find them on our school website or Facebook page. On Mondays the PTO will have pizza available for lunch. Again, all checks should be made out to Quixote, you will not have to do a separate check for PTO.

Snack We have a scheduled time for a snack each day for the students. Students will need to provide their own snack for the day. We would prefer snacks that are nutritious so that they may provide them with the nutrients necessary to keep them alert and attentive until lunch time. Students will be allowed to eat one item from their lunch box and will have their water bottle for a drink. Water bottles may be sent home and refilled daily and sent back. Unfortunately our water fountain does not work at this time.

Toys Bringing toys to school is discouraged because they distract the children from learning. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. If necessary, we will collect toys and return them to the student at the end of the day. The following items are discouraged unless prior permission has been given for a special occasion: stuffed animals, electronic devices, trading cards, silly bands and action figures.

Transportation Changes If your child is to go home a different way than usual, please send a note in his/her WOW binder, or call the office before the end of the day. Please do not email us about a transportation change, as email may not be checked until school is over. Your child will not be allowed to go home a different way than usual without written or called-in notification from you.

Water Bottles We strongly encourage you to send a water bottle labeled with your child's name. Research shows that hydrated brains are learning brains! Please make sure that the water bottle cap is the "pull up" kind and not the twist off kind. We encourage the children to take the bottle home each day to have them refilled and sent back. At this time our water fountain does not work properly.

WOW (We Organize Work) Binder Each child will receive a WOW (We Organize Work) binder that is to travel to and from school each day. Your child will bring home important papers from school in this folder as well as a behavior calendar/log. Please sign/initial their behavior log each night. (See Behavior Management section for an explanation of the colors that will appear on the calendar). The calendar will also include all necessary information for the month. Binders will be checked daily and returned to your child each afternoon. Directions for use will be included in the binder. The binder will include a zipper pencil pocket type pouch which is the ONLY place we will collect money from. If your child brings money for lunch or a field trip it must be in this zipper compartment or they may risk not ordering lunch that day. Students are taught from day one how to check the binder for money and it is their responsibility to turn in money to the appropriate place each morning.

Uniforms All students are required to adhere to the school uniform policy. Students that are not in uniform will be sent to the office so that they may contact a parent to bring them proper clothing or shoes. Please refer to the school uniform policy for specific details regarding the uniform requirements. Remember, all shoes must be closed toed and closed heel each day as they will be participating in walking around the campus as well as PE or Dance.

Volunteering If you are interested in volunteering, we would love to have your help! Please fill out our “Volunteer Form” in this packet with the times you are available and what kind of jobs you would like to do (preparing activities, making copies, working in small groups, etc.). Using volunteers in the classroom requires teacher time and preparation. Because the first weeks of school are very busy, we will not be using volunteers until September. Please remember that you must be registered at the front office in order to volunteer in the classroom!

Volunteers will be scheduled with a time that is helpful to the teacher and students. We are able to use your help so much better when we know when you are coming and have a task prepared for you. If you are scheduled to volunteer on a certain day or time and are not able to come, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may adjust our schedule as necessary.
