JAMES FLINT James “Bruiser” Flint recently completed his eighth season as the head coach at Drexel University. Flint has established Drexel as one of the top programs in the CAA since arriving on the University City campus in 2001. The Philadelphia native was recently named the CAA Coach of the Year for the third time, making him just one of two coaches in league history to win the award on three occasions. He was also named the District 10 Regional Coach of the Year by the NABC. Flint has a 133-108 record at the school and an impressive 84-60 (.583) mark in CAA play. He has already moved into fourth place in career wins at Drexel. Since his arrival, the Dragons have had the CAA Defensive Player of the Year on four occasions, have had 12 All-CAA selections and 11 members of the conference’s All-Defensive team. Flint arrived at Drexel after a 12-year stint at UMass. He was an assistant coach for seven seasons before becoming the school’s 17th head basketball coach. He was 86-72 at UMass (52-28 in Atlantic 10 play) and led three of his teams to postseason play and was the NABC District I Co-Coach of the Year in 1998. Flint was the fastest coach in UMass history to reach 30 wins and was the winningest first-year coach ever at UMass. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Coppin State University before joining the UMass staff. A 1987 Saint Joseph’s graduate, Flint, 43, was a four-year letterwinner with the Hawks. He earned All-Atlantic 10 honors as a senior and led the Hawks to the 1986 A-10 championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament as a junior. The Hawks also made NIT appearances in 1984 and 1985. He was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and graduated with a degree in financial management.

NORM ROBERTS Like the city he was born in, lives in and coaches in, St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts is always on the move. A coach that personifies the qualities of hard work, passion and “doing things the right way,” Roberts’ determination, knowledge and fervor has St. John’s poised to take the next steps toward success. Highlighted by a return to the BIG EAST Tournament in 2007 after a three-year hiatus, St. John’s steady progress under Roberts has been evident. The program reached several milestones in 2006-07, in addition to appearing in the postseason: St. John’s notched its first winning regular-season record since 2002-03, amassed the most victories since its 21-13 campaign that year, and compiled its best conference record since that season as well. The Red Storm also saw its first player since 2003 be named to the All-BIG EAST first team in senior Wooden and Naismith National Player of the Year candidate Lamont Hamilton. One year later in 2007-08, Roberts put the pieces in place to make St. John’s a BIG EAST power once again. Featuring eight freshman, the youngest team in America was led by honorable mention all-conference selection Anthony Mason Jr., and the Red Storm posted key league victories over BIG EAST foes Cincinnati, USF, Rutgers, Providence and Seton Hall. The following season in 2008-09, the Red Storm slayed its biggest giant of the Roberts Era in then-No. 7 Notre Dame, and posted a pair of landmark victories over traditional BIG EAST rival Georgetown. St. John’s won three of its final five games during the regular season and was selected to participate in the postseason College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

JOHN CALIPARI After bringing the University of Massachusetts basketball program to national prominence in the ‘90s and resurrecting the Memphis basketball program in the 2000s, John Calipari became the 22nd coach in UK history, and the seventh in the last 79 years. In 1996, Calipari moved from UMass to the NBA after leading the Minutemen to the Final Four. For his efforts, Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year. Calipari led the Tigers to the 2008 NCAA title game, and Memphis’ 38 wins in 2007-08 made him the winningest coach for a single season in NCAA history. As a result, Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year for a second time in his career. He is only the second coach to receive the honor multiple times since the award’s inception in 1987. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski is the other to do so. Calipari, the 2009 Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year, led the Tigers to nine-straight 20-win campaigns and nine-consecutive postseason appearances, the only Memphis coach to do that. He posted 252 wins — 28 wins per season — as the Tigers’ head coach, making him the winningest coach in school history. Calipari’s 76.1 winning percentage is the third-highest among active NCAA Division I coaches with 10 years experience at college basketball’s Division I level, trailing only Roy Williams and Mark Few. On the NCAA Division I list for winning percentage for all coaches (minimum 10 years), Calipari is in 14th place and ahead of Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Bob Huggins and Lute Olson.

DEREK KELLOGG Former Minuteman point guard and Springfield native Derek Kellogg has been named the 21st head coach in University of Massachusetts men’s basketball history, it was announced by Director of Athletics John McCutcheon on April 23, 2008. The 1995 UMass graduate returns to his alma mater for his first head coaching job after serving as an assistant coach for 12 years, the last eight at the University of Memphis under former UMass head coach John Calipari. The energetic and hard-working Kellogg is largely credited for recruiting many of the Tigers which helped Memphis reach the NCAA Championship game this past season and eight straight 20win seasons and eight consecutive postseason berths. Kellogg recently finished his eighth year on the Memphis staff under Calipari where he brought his “coach on the floor” mentality at UMass to the sidelines, and it has paid huge dividends for the Tiger program. In Kellogg’s eight seasons in Memphis, he has helped lead the Tigers to eight-straight 20-win seasons and eight-consecutive postseason berths (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 NCAA; 2001, 2002, 2005 NIT). Prior to this recent run, the last time Memphis had eight-straight 20-win seasons was from 1982-89. This current stretch of eight-consecutive postseasons is a first for the Tiger basketball program, breaking the previous mark of six-straight postseason tournaments from 1988-93.
