2016 Student Handbook

Edexcel BTEC Level 1 / 2 First Award in Health and Social Care The BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 First Award in Health and Social Care has been designed to: Provide an engaging, robust, broad-based introduction to the sector. The qualification builds on learning from Key Stage 3 for those who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4. It also provides a good introduction to Health and Social Care for learners in post-16 education, and brings together learning at levels 1 and 2 to ensure that every learner taking the qualification completes it with a level of understanding and skill on which to build at a later date. Students will study 4 units: 2 compulsory units and 2 optional units: Unit 1: Human lifespan development (external assessed- via a written exam) This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. Students will go on to consider how these factors are interrelated. Unit 2: Health and Social Values This unit students will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector. Students will apply these values in practice. Through this activity they will develop skills that will be of use in all careers in the health and social care sector. The values described in this unit may be applied to daily life, and to a variety of careers outside the health and social care sector. Unit 3: Effective Communication in Health & Social care Within this unit students will learn about different forms of communication and how they are used effectively in health and social care. Students will look at the importance of using clear speech, body language that shows that you want to help people, and active listening skills that show you are interested in what people are saying. This unit will also provide information about alternative forms of communication such as Braille, British Sign Language and Makaton. Unit 5: Promoting Health & Wellbeing Within this unit students will learn the importance of health promotion within the UK and the different forms of health promotion. Students will also develop their own health promotion material for a specific target group. Students will study through 120 learning hours a variety of units which cover various aspects of the sport and exercise industry. Each unit is awarded with a Pass, Merit or Distinction (GCSE C, B or A equivalent), students who do not manage to achieve a Pass at level two may be eligible to be awarded with a level 1 qualification. All unites are assignment based and are internally assessed with the exception of unit 1 which is assessed through a written exam.

Completion of Classroom Based Coursework and Assessment Students will work towards completing units throughout the academic year, having the opportunity to complete performances at showcase events and upgrade and re-submit coursework throughout the course. Homework Students will be given strict deadlines which will need meeting with some of work being done at home in order to meet the deadline. Internal Verification of Assignments All BTEC assignments have to be internally verified by another member of staff to ensure that all tasks meet the learning outcomes of the units.

Internal Verification of Students Work Students work has to be verified for each unit of work completed to ensure assessment and marking is correct. Each tutor must pass 4 pieces of work to the internal verifier which demonstrates at least one completed task assessed throughout the full range available, i.e. Pass, Merit and Distinction.

Appeals If you are not satisfied with the grade you receive for a unit/award you are entitled to appeal. To do this you need to you need to seek assistance from the Assistant Principal in charge of examination. The Assistant Principal will then investigate the issue.

Malpractice by a Student This list is not exhaustive and other instances of malpractice may be considered by this centre at its discretion: • plagiarism(this is copying of anyone’s work either in part, or as a whole) of any nature • collusion by working collaboratively with other learners to produce work that is submitted as individual learner work • copying (including the use of ICT, which includes using the internet, to aid copying) • deliberate destruction of another’s work • fabrication of results or evidence • false declaration of authenticity in relation to the contents of a portfolio or coursework • impersonation by pretending to be someone else in order to produce the work for another or arranging for another to take one’s place in an assessment/examination/test. If any of the above is found to be true the following action will be taken:  Interviewed by the Assistant Principal in charge of examinations  A written statement will be required  The examination board will be informed  Possible disqualification from achieving an award in the Btec subject.
