As such, it brings new risks that must be addressed” (p. 611). The leading providers of online electronic business exchange services include,

EXOSTAR [cont. from Page 1] “Ariba, CommerceOne, for the establishment of Covisint, eBreviate, FreeMarkets, Moai Technologies, Orbis Online, Procuri, and PurchasePro. Aerospace industry-specific market makers include Cordiem and Exostar” (Emiliani & Stec, 2004, p. 139). Exostar is an independent, global exchange for the aerospace and defense industry. It was formed in March 2000 as an independently run company jointly owned by BAE Systems, The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon. Rolls-Royce joined the group in June 2001. The five founding companies “agreed to buy and sell on a common industry-wide exchange to achieve standardized systems, increased efficiencies and significant cost improvements” (Exostar Profile, 2005, p. 1). According to Callahan (2000), “’The players here all have a strong interest in this case, in particular in moving into developing supply chain efficiencies,’ said Steve Kafka, a Forrester Research Inc. analyst. ‘I met some executives from Boeing and Raytheon, and for them this is about reducing inventory and planning for production capacity.’” (p. 4). Morrison and Firmstone studied how Sociological Theory and e-commerce were interrelated. Their research focused on the importance of developing abstract trust in managing risk and information st over the internet in the 21 century. Morrison and Firmstone (2000) claim that “The internet creates peculiarities, if not problems,
trust” (p. 613). The “ researchers add, Trust is a rational decision making process, but, because we are never in possession of the full facts of any situation, we have to trust” (p. 606). Additionally, as business and individuals increasingly utilize the internet for e-commerce purposes, “a new set of interpretative skills is required to fully understand the virtual environment of the internet” (Morrison & Firmstone, p. 610). This is true as well for Exostar. In order for Exostar to grow and be able to offer more products and services, its cliental will need to become savvier and secure in transitioning from traditional procurement systems to a virtual, shared system. According to the research of Morrison and Firmstone (2000), “Those systems that are already trusted and offer psychological security in the management of risk will be engaged in preference to those that do not. Those systems that do not offer such security are at a competitive disadvantage to those systems that do. In this sense, trust can be seen as a valuable commodity in its own right” (p. 622). E-commerce opens up the world to business and individuals. It changes the way the world conducts business. It speeds up Globalization. As such, it brings new risks that must be addressed. Sociologically, trust is the medium to overcome this

risk. “Trust, as stated, is not and cannot be based on ignorance, but neither is it based on complete knowledge. The management of risk through the establishment of trust is often personal.” Subsequently, for Exostar to be successful, it (Exostar) must minimize the risk of its clients, customers, and suppliers by encouraging and demonstrating trust amongst all parties, its interactive customers, partners, clients, and suppliers. Enhancing the trust in Exostar’s operations, security of data, and integrity of its leadership must be a constant focus of its management. References
