PHIL GOODWIN
Christian Brothers University
Ninth Season
City/State/ZIP: Memphis, TN 38104
PHIL GOODWIN is in his ninth year as head coach of the CBU baseball program. Goodwin has coached 14 AllGSC players, including 2000 GSC Player of the Year Zac Scott and 2006 GSC Co-Player of the Year John Raymond Hehn. Hehn was also named to the Rawlings/ABCA All-America Second Team in 2006. In 2007, Josh Shelton won the GSC West Freshman of the Year award. In 2002, catcher Zac Clements was drafted in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets. Clements reached Class AAA last season, playing for the Norfolk Tides of the Mets' organization. A veteran of the Memphis baseball scene since 1976, Goodwin returned to CBU as its head baseball coach in August of 1999. Coach Goodwin replaced long time head coach and current Athletics Director Joe Nadicksbernd. Goodwin served as Nadicksbernd's assistant coach from 1988 to 1990. Goodwin has served as head coach at Kingsbury, Whitehaven, and Cordova High Schools, amassing a 72% winning percentage. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Christian Brothers HS. Goodwin's teams won two city and district championships and sent several players on to the college level. Goodwin was the inaugural baseball coach at Cordova HS in 1997 and with Sophomores only, took his second squad to a third place finish in the traditionally tough District 14AAA. From 1990-1996, Coach Goodwin served in several capacities for the Memphis Chicks, the AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals at the time. A graduate of The University of Tennessee at Martin, Goodwin and wife Debbie have two sons, Casey (13) and Jeff (11).
